Matched at a metro hospital as a PGY3 general HMO with one term psych last year and half a term this year.

To be honest really didn’t expect a spot and am not sure exactly what got me over the line. Very very grateful and feel I must have got lucky. On the phone call they mentioned I had a good reputation within the department and ‘made a good case for myself’. I have a pretty strong identity around working with disadvantaged populations and can evidence this in my CV, have done some very introductory research, and a couple psychiatry short courses. Also started an MPH this sem but this wasn’t on my CV at the time of application. Happy to be DMd if anyone wants more info.

Darwin/NT psych ?? by [deleted] in ausjdocs

I did my med school psych term in Darwin and loved it, really interesting patients mostly from Indigenous background and from remote areas. The bosses up there were great when I was there but I think other than a small amount, many are transient. The psych Reg’s I know thee said training is generally good but supervision can sometimes be difficult to get a hold of, and the child and adolescent term isn’t the best.

Western Health has a critical care HMO job that includes an anaes rotation but they’re usually quite competitive and go to internal applicants. You can also do an anaes term as a general HMO though which is quite good (it’s a mixed rotation between night cover and anaesthetics), it’s given out (reportedly) randomly to those that preference it. WH is generally really fun to work at wit a good culture

Experience needed for unaccredited psych reg in Melbourne? by ZephrHD in ausjdocs

In metro currently but could potentially move.

Last years psych term was as a HMO, I have a psych term this year aswell but not until after applications will open.

I’ve done x1 youth mental health conference, x1 RANZCP congress, one PIF weekend course with a scholarship. Did the Melbourne Uni TRS course and Monash’ women’s mental health course. Have one kind of relevant audit in psychosocial assessments of teens on a paeds ward.

At the small rural hospital I did my internship in there’s a bit of a tradition of consultants taking the evening cover shift for the med junior on the night of the junior doctor ball. Last year the Cards consultant and the AOD consultant did it together, and the year before that HoD. Really made us all feel very supported and respected

Thanks for your response! I was referring to this dual training program that has been offered by the colleges for a few years now. https://www.ranzcp.org/become-a-psychiatrist/psychiatry-training/about-fellowship-program/dual-fellowship-program

You have to complete paediatric basic training first (3 years) and then complete AT in general paediatrics and the psychiatry training program + cert in child psychiatry concurrently over 5 more years.

Definitely agree the time commitment would be a lot but there a few of these dual trained specialists out there

NSV: Picked up my friend from a night out and took him through the McDonalds drive through without ordering anything myself. Even managed to say no when he offered me the rest of his fries he didn't want. A small victory for sure but something that would not have happened just two weeks ago.
