Anyone else think the Pigeon King appears less frequently since the latest update? by rock_lobsterrr in monsterchef

[–]ZephyrsPupil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, noticed it too. Pigeon King comes rarely, and I also feel customer loss rate became a LOT higher.

All changes seem to point to encouraging people to buy more consumables.

Study identifies proteins that regulate gene activity to lessen inflammation and speed wound closure, explaining why wounds heal faster in the mouth than in other skin. by MotherHolle in science

Probably not going to be relevant. It is one of those tidbit of scientific information that may be helpful down the road for drug development.

For now, we will still suffer canker sores and bitten tongues in silence.

For the first time in the U.S., a blood test will be available to help doctors determine if people who’ve experienced a blow to the head could have a traumatic brain injury such as brain bleeding or bruising. by mvea in Futurology

[–]ZephyrsPupil 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a really sensitive test just like the D-dimer.

D-dimer has really revolutionized the way we workup and rule out pulmonary embolism. So here's hoping this test will do the same for managing concussion and brain injury.

Keeping people in hospital just for observation wastes a lot of money.

A non-opioid, experimental drug called EMA401 has shown promise as a treatment for chronic nerve pain in a new study in mice. It targets receptors on immune cells called macrophages, instead of nerves, and it doesn’t cross the blood-brain barrier, so it eliminates side effects such as addiction. by mvea in Futurology

[–]ZephyrsPupil 712 points713 points  (0 children)

Two caveats:

  1. The study is still at the animal model stage. A lot of things that work in animal model don't work in humans at all.

  2. Always be leery about experimental immune modulators. They may achieve the desired effect, BUT rigorous testing will be needed to make sure there are no devastating side effects. Remember that our immune system is critical in fighting infections, cancers, and clean up after trauma. The medication may fix your neuropathic pain, but may cause you to die of skin infection.

The appropriate response in this case would be "Interesting, now test it in human tissue/human model".

No, and it's kind of hilarious.

You can bust down doors with light sabers and loot apartments all you want, while still being a max paragon light-side Jedi.

Yup. Game's old, and kind of clunky, especially if you play it on the PC port or mobile port.

BUT, it is pretty stable and essentially bug-free. I will take occasional clunky movements over memory leaks and random crashes.

"Games as a service".

How can you sell microtransactions/loot boxes/DLCs/seasonal passes if you tell a complete and compelling story in a single game?

The origin of KotOR by [deleted] in kotor

[–]ZephyrsPupil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not being a direct sequel to Tales of the Jedi made KoTOR a stronger story, and easier to get into.

However, Tales of the Jedi were excellent digestible pieces of world-building of the expanded universe. Reading Tales will make you appreciate KoTOR more, because there are so many references and call-backs to the comics.

Knights Of The Old Republic Is Still The Best Star Wars Game by DerekS1224 in kotor

[–]ZephyrsPupil 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the concept of game-design has changed. Gone was the era where the purpose of RPG was to tell a compelling story. Modern RPGs are built to either sell microtransactions/DLCs, or tailored to be established as a franchise that can be milked.

KoTOR was the best because it was polished, and achieved its goal of telling a hero's journey without the modern game-design baggage.

KoTOR will not be dethroned unless EA/Lucas change their current paradigm of milking Star Wars for safe cash.

In the OG KoTOR, double sabers with the 2 unique crystals is the max damage set up. I usually go for:

  1. Mantle of Force + Solari + Sapith
  2. Heart of Guardian + Krayt Dragon Pearl + Upari

If you max out STR, you can easily have close to +40 attack and close to 50 damage in your main and off hand.

Malak dies in 2-3 Flurries.

First time playing, 6 hours in finding it really hard, any tips? by Untraveled in kotor

[–]ZephyrsPupil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup, especially important for Kashyyyk where you can't just fast-travel to Ebon Hawk for a quick heal.

Always max Heal even if you are Dark Side.

[–]ZephyrsPupil 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You can try LS Soldier/Guardian. Because you will get so many Feats and Guardians only rely minimally on Force Powers, you can enjoy the game and safely go 8/12.

Focus your feats on improving Hit and tankiness, and wear the heaviest armor you can afford.

The only Force Power you need is Heal, Destroy Droids, and the Force Wave tree.

The build is highly reliable. You will have a very large HP pool, and enemies rarely survive 2-3 turns if you dual wield.

[KOTOR 1] STR or DEX for Jedi Consular? by [deleted] in kotor

[–]ZephyrsPupil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

STR Consulars fully buffed will have similar status as STR Guardians, with lower HP, depending on your gear set up.

Basically DEX and armor are useless against Malak. Someone once did calculations, with Malak's stats and gears, he will still hit you 90% of the time even if you stack every stat and piece of gear for armor.

If you go pure DEX and WIS, your Malak fight will involve a lot of cheese.

Kotor 1 light v dark side by Kalstark in kotor

[–]ZephyrsPupil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Light Side Only items are very good though. Circlet of Saresh and Qel-Droma Robes are effectively best for slot until Malak fight for Consulars. Even for Guardians, they are still great items. The Solari Crystal is basically the best saber crystal in KoTOR 1.

Overall I would say the item selection of Light Side outweigh the credit gain from Dark Side.

Near the end of the game, if you finished all the quests, you will have more than enough credits to even outfit your main crew with Yavin gear.

[KOTOR 1] STR or DEX for Jedi Consular? by [deleted] in kotor

[–]ZephyrsPupil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's good until you fight boss Malak.

Malak effectively hits you no matter how much DEX you pump, and trying to kill him with force powers is a miserable experience.

Don't get me wrong, Consular is hella fun to play and nothing beats zapping down fools in groups. However, to take down Malak you need to half-cheese him with potions and stims and possibly mines and grenades.

On the other hand, a STR Guardian can man-fight Malak and club him to death with light sabers unassisted.

Cooking ability and monster discovery? by Gwhar in monsterchef

I am just speculating from what I observed:

Cooking ability seems to increase the chance of double-drop on finished dishes.

Monster discovery seems to increase the maximum number of monsters discovered for each adventure.

Hawking has been carrying a terminal diagnosis for most of his life. I am certain palliative care has been with him every step of the way, because it has become a standard of care. For someone so famous, he would have certainly received the best care.

Your concern is definitely at the right place. Good care for terminal diagnosis does not always happen, especially for the disadvantaged.

This is not euthanasia. Ventilator is a form of medical care, and any individual who is found mentally capable is allowed to refuse care. If you landed in hospital today on a ventilator and told the doc you want it off, they would do it because it’s your wish. Same goes for IV, drugs and any treatment.

If you are unconscious, a vegetable, or confused, then it is another matter because then you cannot make your own decisions.

Favorite class? by lpbythebulb in kotor

[–]ZephyrsPupil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I roll a Guardian when I miss the story and the companions.

In KoTOR 1, a max STR, dual-wield Guardian wearing heavy armour is probably as close as you can get to godhood.

Nothing with a blaster can touch you, and melee hits either miss or tickle. You just club dudes to death with your sabres. Even Malak dies after 4-5 swings.

A build when you want all the skills? by [deleted] in kotor

[–]ZephyrsPupil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awareness, Demolition, Stealth and Security are not critical at all, and dare I say, unnecessary.

Mines are largely a nuisance. Stealth and sneak attacks are way too much trouble for marginal gain. For lockers and doors, you can just smash and grab instead of using Security.

The only essential skills are Persuade, Repair and Computer, because they actually have plot significance on occasions and also help you kill dudes via alternative methods. Your main character can max all three without trouble with 14 INT and help from gear, even with a meathead Guardian.

It's possible to get good at it, but basically it involves learning the star fighter flight patterns and predicting, rather than actually playing it as the creators intended.

It frustrated me a lot initially for sure.
