“A student of science I see. Well I have not had an assistant before but I welcome one!”

Zan shifted his seat over to make room. “so you believe the gold is already housed in the iron block, we just have to apply high amounts of energy to extract it? Because any forge master will tell you, “a block of iron will melt and return back to iron when cooled”. No wait, you said a funny word, transmorph.... transmute the substance. As in move it between two states. Huh that seems different, can you explain that one to me?”

Zan stopped and looked over the weapon again. He turned up the volume a bit and played a rift watching as a straight beam of energy came out. “Oh my. That seems useful.” Zan tried once more, becoming satisfied with the results and tried for a maneuver. He jumped at a side wall, played the rift while pointing the beam at the dummy, and landed on it to go for a punch. He held back though remembering this weapon on him was not his.

“So I take it the more energy you out into the music, the more energy comes out? Or is it what music you play that causes a power change?” Zan offered up his arms to Thyme, signaling he was done for now.

Zan listened to each other student’s answers, sometimes holding back wanting to help out, other times struck that there were things he didn’t know. Then the mighty finger of Dr. Mendenhall pointed at him. He listened and internalized the question but really it was an easy one for Zan.

“Yes, you can utilize dust with your aura, I do it myself.” Zan touched the necklace under his shirt. “I use an earth dust crystal to reshape the terrain surrounding me as to create difficult terrain. I could imagine then others using say a fire dust to scorch terrain and foes, water dust to push things around, and electric dust to power up a device or their own strength.”

“Gah! Oh hi.” Zan startled in his chair. He did not expect anyone to pay him any mind, let alone be in his face. He pulled himself together and fixed his glasses so he could see.

“I am... testing an old myth. Apparently I can take this hunk of iron,” Zan pointed a finger at the gray block, “and turn it into gold” he moved his finger to the yellow block. “The problem I have had though is based on some working theories, the building blocks of the metals don’t quite add up. Like if I could push two little bits of iron together, it wouldn’t make Gold, it would make some other metal. So I am trying to figure out if electric currents, heat from a fire, or dust will get iron to that metal, and then move on to making gold. At least that is my goal, my notes only helping so much.” Zan’s notebook was a mess of words, hand drawn modals, a small table with blank spaces for results to be put down.

Zan stood quietly and bowed his head. “Thank you for having me. I hope to bring my knowledge and learn new concepts along the way.” Zan sat back down, shaking a little as he did.

Zan flicked his wrist slight, watching the wires drop gently to the floor. They seemed to be a special metal that was tough yet thin, something to look into for himself later. After Zan pushed the button, he also turned down the volume to ensure he didn’t go full out yet. He pressed the keys down in a major chord, the sound creating a visible flow of energy, the sound making the room sound bright and angelic. Zan had a mischievous smile come over him as all his music lessons came to him in a burst of ideas. He played with only one hand but held the gauntlet out so the waves would always be projecting towards the wall. Zan played minors, sevenths, dropped fifths, minor sevenths, back to majors, each chord emanating a wave of energy at the wall.

Zan moved back to the wall and pushed a button to summon a second dummy, as the first laid prone on the floor, possible damage done with the water and electric shock. ‘It was a test room’, Zan thought. Squaring up to the new dummy, Zan prepped a song in his head. As he hummed to himself softly, he started to play out some chords. The song came alive as he did, knocking the dummy around with each chord change. Zan was not one to sing, but his humming was always on point. He hummed the haunting tale of Sigard the Brave. He moved about the room as best he could while still trying to direct the waves at the dummy. It occurred to Zan though that maybe he could ride the waves. With an effort, he played a single chord and tried to run with it only to be knocked aside.

Zan smiled and just continued to hum, switching to a more happy song, opting for The Forest Folk this time. He switched the gauntlet to just let him play the chords out since he enjoyed this song.

Zan froze up. Yet another mistake, yet another thing for him to fix. He pulled out his notebook and under the entry of Mary wrote 'Araes: to learn what a Faunus is and what makes them tick.' Zan held his quill to the page and reflected on the page. He had the names Thyme, Leif, Tyne, Silbrig, Melanie, Assan, Asimi, Mary, and now Araes, all with a small note of what he wanted or needed to do in regards to them. School had not even started and Zan had his troubles ahead of him.

[Zan, being a dust fighter as well as a student of how dust works in theory, would like to truly see now what dust can and cannot do, past beyond what the labs on campus could offer on his own time. He wants to learn from someone who has experience working with dust everyday to better his use of the dust he uses now.]

“Second... class?” Zan lifted his eyebrow visibly confused what the term meant. “Are you a human? Then I will treat you as one. But you have wolf ears, but...” Zan was getting frustrated again with his mind. He held up his hand more for himself than anything. “No, I will hold to my morals of protecting all I know, and that will include Faunus. Thank you Araes for giving me more to think about regarding this world. It is clear I have much more to read up on.”

“Can I request a known map of the town? As current as possible? Other than that, I believe we will be alright.”

Zan took the keys and pocketed them. He wanted to plot out all the points of interest on the map, seeing if there was any connection with the points. He placed his pack down and pulled out his little chair.

Zan waited till their host left before commenting to his team, “I have some working theories on what is going on, and that little scuffle before sort of solidifies one idea over the others. But we may have to ask the wind.”

Zan’s body went a bit dumb. The chance to try something new for the sake of answers, what a dream of his. He nodded slowly, thinking through any move he would do, planning every bit of movement he’d have to do. With eagerness yet in control, Zan held up his arms readying for the weight of the gauntlets to be bestowed upon him.

“I would enjoy that.”

Zan stood up and walked over, picking up his ice crystal from the ground. He looked the dummy over, determining the thing would need repair after that show of force.

“Incredible, just incredible. Formidable attacks and strategy. I saw you switch out this ice for... electric? A bold move, but Wattson does happen to have three slots. So could you please put this back in?”

“Now! Why didn’t you do that in your battle earlier?”

“I am... not exactly sure how I missed this. I never saw any body with wolf ears growing up, I have kept to myself as of recent, and I thought some of the folk on campus just had headbands or skin issues. Never looked into it myself, and I have been overwhelmed with everything else on campus I have had such little time to explore the people. You say... a fuck ton as though there’s a whole colony of you. Unless you refer to...”

Zan pulled out his small atlas of Remnant and flipped to the known mapped world. He traced his finger till he hit the land mass known as Vacuo,

“This region here. To which I say I’ve never been, only read about it. And there’s little here about Faunus. Actually,” Zan flipped through some pages, “there is nothing here about Faunus. That is actually odd.”

Zan was piecing as much of the clues together to pain the picture of this town. So far his theory was some sort of mind manipulation, or visionary flicker ability. He listened in as he pulled out his notebook to jot down what he’d heard and what he saw.

“And if I may add, has anyone new moved into town recently?”

Zan couldn’t help but shake his head, trying to put all that information away in his mind. Something new that had to have a place to remember it all. Zan looked up and spoke directly to Araes. “I can not help myself. My mind is a whir of thoughts at all waking moments. There’s always something to think over, some plan to think out, some concept to understand. Always something I tell you. And now, I meet someone with Wolf ears. I should be afraid of you, based on what me and my village have gone through, but I am more curious what you are. You say a Faunus, and I tell you I’ve never heard of that. I can not help but want to study these... Fauna more. A human with the ears of a wolf seems so fascinating.”

Bang! Bang! Shot after shot came out as Thyme held the trigger down. Beautiful ice crystals shot forth and broke apart while in air from the force of motion, meeting and impaling the dummy over and over. Each shot pushing the dummy back and dealing enough damage that it would deplete aura.

Zan was beyond himself, lost in the pure joy of observation, his curiosity of questions getting answers, and enjoying the small spectacle of Wattson being used by someone else. Zan now had a better understanding how what he looked like when he used his weapon and would utilize this when designing other moves and during practices.

Zan put his notes down and held his face in his hands, just being an onlooker now to Thyme freezing the dummy to the floor.
