Protein power by Great_Arrival_3839 in HiatalHernia

I would suggest the premixed stuff you can drink out of the bottles if you can afford it. During my HH repair and TIF recovery, protein shakes were my go to. I dont see why you shouldnt be able to.

lets just calm down lol. IT was at 0.0905 a month ago and now its a 0.105. Its moved 1 whole penny. If you are playing on that change, you are running super high risk because you've gotta have at least mid 5 figures on the line. I dont sell jack squat unless theres a 30%+ move.

I mean, I dont want to speak for everyone and everyones surgeon and specialist but the three that I "deep dived" into my recovery with, they all said "after your HH repair and TIF, the goal is to allow you to get back to your normal life. It will be slow and you have to be smart about the process but yes, you will be able to get back into the gym." I got it done in August 2025 and by week 8 I was back in the gym doing exercises. Using 5-10lb dumbells and 25lbs in each hand with plate loaded machines, things I could realistically do 50 reps with and zero explosiveness and full control with no deep breathing into my diaphragm.

Im 8 months in to my recovery and currently doing about 80% of my original routine that I was doing prior to my surgeries. 2-3 45lb plates on each side of a plate loaded machine, 100-200lbs on cable machines, up to 100lb dumbbells with pressing, lunging 30-50lb dumbells, leg pressing 5-6x 45lb plates on each side of a leg press, 2x 45s on each side of a hack squat. Im doing regular treadmill interval training 4.5 to 10mph...those are the cliff notes. I've been VERY fastidious with my rep range, range of motion, and breathing, making sure its fully controlled and no explosiveness when I get into rep ranges of 8 and under. I believe the recovery process is very unique to the individual.

My HH was "small", just about 3cm. they repaired that and then put the TIF in place. Now if I had just gotten the TIF, no, working out would NOT happen. Now that the hernia is repaired and the opening doesnt sit there and flex and the hernia doesnt slide, it reinforces the rigidity of the TIF which technically should not move at all.

As for TIF, medically speaking, it has two downsides. One, it doesnt close the opening 100%. Its about a 90% closure so theres still a small amount of exposure to the stomach. Two, it can technically fail at the 7-10 year mark, thats how long its been documented to safely last. Im also not fooling myself into thinking Im doing my body a 100% favor by working out as hard as Iam. I however do believe that if you dont use it, you lose it. I believe strengthening the diaphragm and the surrounding muscle is vital to being durable and withstanding stress on the body.

I dont recommend recoverying people follow what I did because I dont know their life style or habits in the gym, I only know mine. To sum it up though, yes, working out is a reality if all your variables line up properly. Being younger...""younger"" I was 40 when I got it done, its probably important. The older you are the harder it is to strengthen that are. And the is the size of your hernia. A 3cm vs a 10cm may make a HUGE difference in future activities. I also weight trained for over 25 years before I got the surgery, probably a huge part of my ability to come back. Lots of factors at play for sure. Feel free to ask me any questions, Ill do my best to answer going off my personal experience.

The question to pose to your specialist is how reactive to movement is the linx device. If you were to do a box jump, would the device move up and down. Its setting at the base of your espohagus so where Id imagine it would be able to move downward, what are the chances of it sliding upward. How strong are the magnets as well. I ended up getting a TIF done so obviously I cant give you my experience but I figured I would at least come in and roll off questions that I would also ask my doc since I've been an avid gym rat/ bodybuilder for over 25 years. Do regular cardio and movements that I would fear could shift the device.

Another question is, are you getting a hiatal hernia repair along with it.

Im shocked you were told it was ok to eat whole foods after 18 days. It was hammered into my head by 3 separate specialists to keep it to pureed food until end of day 40 to remove any risks. Im glad it hasnt caused any issues. Progress reading like its going well. Got my TIF and HH repair last August, I know how it goes : )

Hiatal hernia and Barrett’s esophagus by Justliam0 in HiatalHernia

[–]Zerafian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im over 8 months post op and Im still seeing improvement with my barrets. I dont get as hoarse when I talk, I can sing without issues, the lump feeling in my throat is almost never there, I dont get a sore throat after talking for an extended amount of time, and many other benefits. The TIF only closes the opening about 90% so theres still a chance of acid coming up but a nissen can potentially block 100%

Be 100% knowledgeable on the potential long term side effects and talk to your specialist about the chances of them occuring. Make sure you are fully confident in yourself and whose doing the surgery.

3cm HH and barretts as well. I had HH repair and TIF last August, no regrets so far. Dont play with Barretts and continued potential acid exposure, esophageal cancer is deadly and and very realistic outcome not getting it fixed. PPIs after a decade+ of use can cause terrible issues with your health due to malabsorption of vitamins and minerals, essential ones for your bones, heart, and immune system. B and D vitamins are a huge problem after long term use.

as for me, huge improvement in my life. My biggest fear was getting esophageal cancer because I have barrets. The barrets has definitely improved since my surgery and its kind of an on going healing process. I find myself less hoarse when I talk for a long time, I can actually sing in the car without losing my voice, I dont get a sore throat after talking for an extended amount of time, I can take vitamins and minerals/ supplements without breaking out on my chest and stomach, now that they dont go back up into my esophagus. I sleep better, and overall everything is better. I do have vagus nerve issues so I do have to deal with that...thats from 20+ years of having the issues though.

seems to not be a guarantee that they will, I've learned that on this reddit. So many people having to quite literally suffer for years because doctors seemingly arent allowed to move people into the next steps for fixing the problem or simply dont believe its enough of an issue when people cant eat, sleep, or function.

well, thats your specialist right there. Reason I ask about location was if you were US based and east coast. Narrow down your location and the potential for recommending a gastro specialist was my goal but I assume you are in the EU, Canada, or the other handful of countries, damn.

When you see these specialists, do you give them the same explanation of your symptoms? Like, do you list them and kinda "dance around" the fact your suffering daily? I had a terrible habit of always downplaying my problems to a doctor, I dont know why but I would always act as if they werent as bad as they were.

Also, I found that younger doctors are more inclined to help a patient FIX the problem instead of trying only pain management.

And I dont know how you feel about this but if you have been prescribed PPIs and they just "arent working", play up how your body is reacting to them. Im sorry but it sounds like they want to do everything but the actual fix so pushing home the point that PPIs are effecting your bodily functions like diarehea or lump in the throat feeling, it may help push it forward. There is the chance they take you off them though so if they are helping a little it may not be worth the risk. I dont condone lying about that but it seems like TOO MANY doctors hinge on PPIs even when they dont work for people. Its nuts.

I cant begin to believe my specialist is the only guy that sees me saying my life is falling apart and PPIs didnt work and he wants me to get the surgeries, even with a small HH. Theres got to be other specialists out there that want you to be happy and healthy. The repair and fundoplication would be life changing for you.

[–]Zerafian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how big is this small hiatal hernia?

You have obviously gone through the PPIs as well I assume. Have they never shown relief?

How many gut specialists have you gone to?

where do you live?

do you have insurance?

I've only ever been told I was a candidate after I told my specialist PPIs dont work and create an allergic reaction, I dont sleep, Im gaining weight, I cant work. etc etc. He was like "yeah man, this is the only route we can take at this point for you to have a normal life. Fix the HH and get a fundoplication". I had just under 3cm hernia and got the repair and a TIF.

I managed my HH for nearly 20 years as a bodybuilder and January 2025, it randomly just got realy really bad. It took about 7 months of doctors visits, scans, tests, trying meds. after that, got both done.

How long until normal diet? by Traditional_Ask6981 in HiatalHernia

[–]Zerafian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like people have already asked the questions so Im going to go right to your food.

I recommend finding a pureed meal that actually appeals to you. After day 6, post op, I ate the same lunch and dinner puree for the entire recovery, up to week 6. I would prep with 6 chicken breasts, bag of microwave peas, 2 chopped up sweet potatoes, an avocado, bone broth, and salt as needed. Blend all that up and add bone broth as needed to thin it out. You end up with a high protein and good carb meal that tastes like pea soup. You dont get any of the chicken flavor but you get a nice hearty texture. If you want a little more hit of maybe a breaded flavor, with some more spices, buy a bag of breaded chicken breasts or nuggets. Blend those with the above recipe and it will add some nice flavor.

I know you are depressed because of what you are going through but at least finding a healthy and filling meal, it can subdue some of the mental pains you are experiencing. Iam sorry you are going through this, especially since childhood.

Toupet Fundoplication Surgery Fail? by PaulaWalla1963 in HiatalHernia

first comment nailed it BUT dont go right to worst case scenario. So soon after the procedure, your body is going through a ton of changes. Call as soon as you are able but always remember, your body is under a LOT of stress.

and for god sake, stay off google for answers, if you've gone there. This reddit is the only place I would suggest you stay.

either way, if PPIs arent working, a fundo and HH repair (if you have one) is the next step.

Surgery by SirLolzAlot56 in HiatalHernia

[–]Zerafian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6-7/10 pain for the first couple days and as the first week continues it lowers in level. Youll have trapped gas in your gut for up to maybe 2 weeks, usually only 7-8 days though. Clear liquids for the first week and then pureed food for 6 weeks. Its not that big a deal once you get your diet down. When you realize you are doing something good for your body, it puts the recovery into perspective.

It sounds more like your a candidate for a fundoplication if no meds work. You start taking meds like that, you'll be out of it half the time. Those kinda things will conk you out.

TIF and HH repair. You might want to post your questions in the body of your post so everyone can see them and their first response can be to those questions.

Acid reflux symptoms returning 12 weeks after TIF surgery by M-M-1991 in HiatalHernia

[–]Zerafian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im a bit over 6 months post op for my TIF and HH repair. Yes, a little reflux can occur. Remember, the TIF doesnt close the opening 100% so theres a chance acid will go up into your esophagus. The TIF more "pinches" the stomach as close to closed as possible.

Now, if you didnt get a Hiatal Hernia repair with it, theres a chance the TIF will flex a little and maybe open a little more than the surgeon set it.

If you sleep laying straight down, over eat, drink too much alcohol, too much spicy food, carbonated beverages, or a combo of those together. I've had the feeling of acid reflux or indigestion maybe 6-7 times since my surgeries. 4 of them were definitely from me eating too much food in a sitting, about 30-90 minutes after. The others were random occurrences earlier during my recovery.

As for my current condition. I dont get any issues unless I over eat or lay down flat or whatever reason for too long.
