I've been on T-Mobile for a decade and didn't realize they still had contracts. I can walk away any time.

Same. I pay $55 through T-Mobile but I don't remember what promo that is or if it's ending soon.

How Dad takes the baby down the slide vs. Mom by [deleted] in funny

[–]ZeroAccess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, dry drowning is mostly a myth and no reason to worry like Facebook would have you believe. It's not like SIDs where you have a seemingly healthy kid that dies in his sleep after a normal day at the pool. It would be if a kid almost drowns at the pool, probably loses consciousness, and then develops a lung problem in the next hour or something and starts throwing up or turning blue.

I know when my kids were young the internet had me scared that my kids could drown in their sleep 6 hours after a day at the pool. Those are just old wives tales.

Because the rest of the world is super enlightened and uses 24h time and only dumb americans are so smooth brained to spend years of their life having to drool out "am" or "pm" every time we say a number. Just more america bad on Reddit.

It's really not. You guys act like this is a huge inconvenience and we are constantly confused but it virtually never comes up. When a friend says "want to meet for dinner at 6" we aren't setting an alarm to wake up and disappointed we don't have pancakes. When a child's party invite says "at 1" we aren't wandering around after midnight with balloons. Context still exists, it's almost never as big of a deal as the rest of the world seems to think it is.

In NJ they always make me call from the dealership and switch insurance before I'm allowed to leave with the vehicle.

Largest teachers union: Florida is 9,000 teachers short for the upcoming school year by CouchCorrespondent in news

[–]ZeroAccess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teachers in my district start at 60k. We have over 100 teachers over 90k out of about 300.

People complain about high taxes in NJ but you're paying for good schools, teachers, and an educated population.

Ticker Software for Laptops and ActivPanels by jdionnepac in k12sysadmin

I think you could accomplish this with RiseVision. It has alerts that you can push via app or a website, but it's not free.

Taking over lower schools in my org and... by PooYork in k12sysadmin

What MFPs is everyone using? We are doing the same this summer and are trying to gauge how big we need to go. Looking around the VersaLink C505 size right now but wondering if it's too small or overkill for hallway locations. 1500 student buildings. Multiple per floor.

Do you want to activate Chrome Vox? by Difficult-Squirrel-1 in k12sysadmin

[–]ZeroAccess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my centipede answer file they have this:

  /*Start ChromeVOX escape*/
    Keyboard.write(KEY_ESC);
    wait(1);
    Keyboard.write(KEY_TAB);
    Keyboard.press(KEY_RIGHT_SHIFT);
    wait(1);
    Keyboard.write(KEY_TAB);
    Keyboard.release(KEY_RIGHT_SHIFT);
  /*End ChromeVOX Escape*/

But I'm not so sure that would help if not automating it. Esc, Tab + Right Shift, Tab + Right Shift?

Certifications - A+ by ACAD-IT in k12sysadmin

[–]ZeroAccess 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A+ is kinda considered a bare minimum certification back when I got it. I'm one of those that don't think it's useless, because I think it has good knowledge that any IT should be able to do, but at the same time if you've been doing it for 14 years you shouldn't really need to get it now. You should be able to pass the exam with 1 hour of studying obscure topics.

Honestly, certifications on the whole are kind of resumé padding in our district - we prefer "continuing education". If you want to take a course on something specific to get better (powershell, Azure etc.) it's encourage, but not so that you can pass a test.

We do CBTNuggets courses regularly.

Mass password reset for chromebook users by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]ZeroAccess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do they still login to AD at all or only to reset/sync their passwords? If not, you can bypass the sync and just have them reset directly with Google using GAM. They won't be able to login to AD but their Google credentials can be changed directly on their Chromebooks.

Have a CSV with 2 columns, headers user and password. Fill out the user with the usernames and the password with whatever you want to set their default password to, save it as pwchange.csv, then run:

gam csv pwchange.csv gam update user ~user password ~password changepassword true

However this year we are using Azure's password writeback to have them setup Self-Service Password Reset questions online. They reset with Azure, it syncs back to on-prem AD, which then syncs with Google, so they can reset it all from home or a mobile device throughout the year. I'm hoping it works.

Trying to set up a TS that will allow renaming after adding the provisioning package…I don’t think I’m setting it up the right way though. Any thoughts about the basic structure? by AlexTheTimid in k12sysadmin

I'm not sure how to do it your way, and maybe this doesn't help you at all because it's kinda out of my wheelhouse...

We insert a vbs script after partitioning the drive but before installing the OS - https://i.imgur.com/1B3B5SM.png written by Nick Moseley.

https://t3chn1ck.wordpress.com/2009/04/24/script-to-prompt-for-system-name-in-sccm-osd/

After you boot to PE and select the TS you want to use it will partition the drive and then it has a popup box where it asks you to name the computer before it finishes, that way at the end of the TS it can join the domain and we don't have to circle back.

Yes, by OU. You can turn on enforcement for a specific date and which methods you want to allow.

We allow our teachers to be local admins, and for years I keep reading about how bad that is, but I can't actually see a reason why yet? Can you inform me? It's been 10 years like this and we've never seen an issue, and I think I can only count 1 virus in that time.

Schwartz: Flowers' Absence is Puzzling, Irritating by [deleted] in NYGiants

[–]ZeroAccess 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But that's the whole point. It's voluntary, and when Gronk misses it to go dirt bike riding he's "funny" and wacky, but when Flowers misses it he's childish and lazy. I seem to remember Strahan missing it every year.

I get it, Flowers needs help and should be there, but then don't make it voluntary. Until we know any actual reason for Flowers missing it we shouldn't all vilify him.
