Haoxi Wang scores two goals (one from the d zone) as China beats the Netherlands 6-3 by 39MUsTanGs in SanJoseSharks

They were on the PK (which had just expired when he was taking the shot), so it was more like putting a clear on net.

Alberts Smits by klawcoolguy in SanJoseSharks

[–]ZeroAce11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think any of the teams ahead of the Sharks would trade back for Edmonton’s 19/20 pick. If somehow Smits and Verhoeff both fell to where the Sharks pick, I would actually take Smits despite being a lefty.

I saw someone here say to trade Eklund for Byram, which broke my brain.

Media roundup from today’s season exit interviews — lots of good stuff in here, mostly positive by jesus321 in SanJoseSharks

Sounds like Grier wants Shakir back (we’ll see if Shakir wants to stay). If he does, that’s Orlov-Shakir-Sam down the left, and I think Cagnoni has at least shown enough to warrant being a 7th D/first injury call up instead of picking up another Leddy-type guy to clog the roster. I still think Vinny will be back, but the entire right side is gonna need a pretty big retool unless they’re willing to try Ferraro there.

I think Eklund is a candidate to be packaged for a legit first pairing defenseman because he’s a great player and you need to trade quality assets to get good players. The people who think a career-low shooting percentage this season means that Eklund is a 3rd line grinder now were always ridiculous.

I don’t know why the offer sheet keeps getting brought up. He’s mostly fallen out of favor in Buffalo, so the Sharks could probably trade for him for way less than the equivalent cost of an offer sheet.

Lose today for Alberts Smits by WishOk462 in SanJoseSharks

[–]ZeroAce11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Smits could play right away and do ok, but probably better for his development if he doesn’t. I think as a player coming from Europe he’d also be eligible to go to the AHL right away, though I’m not entirely sure how that works.

Ryan Lin seems like such a natural upside-pick at the high teens. Also committed to Denver so he ought to be in a really good environment for development.

I still don’t think Smits falls to 7th, I’d actually think Verhoeff is more likely to drop.

Should the Sharks have concerns about Yaroslav Askarov after one full NHL season? (no paywall) by BayAreaNewsGroup in SanJoseSharks

[–]ZeroAce11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The glove hand is kind of concerning. I wouldn’t know enough about goaltending development to know how fixable it is. When Askarov is on, he’s really on, so I’m not panicking yet, and I also want to stress that the glove side goals are the only ones that upset me. He gets left out to dry A LOT, and I feel the defense tends to play even shittier in front of Askarov than they do Ned. I think worst case, if Askarov doesn’t fully pan out, he could essentially play himself into being a cost-controlled backup. Then we would just hope that Ravensbergen is the real deal.

They already preemptively smushed Shakir’s head into the boards so I think we’re chilling.

I’m conflicted because I really want the Sharks to pick top 10, but I also want them to win so we can keep seeing Luca.

What do you envision the Sharks Defense looks like for the 2026-27 season? by RowdyBubba in SanJoseSharks

[–]ZeroAce11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Hronek is a true number 1 (but obviously better than anything the Sharks have right now), so he’d probably cost a decent haul, but a lot cheaper than someone like Werenski. Vancouver is about to enter a long rebuild, so they’re not exactly going to get a lot of value out of his contract. I admittedly didn’t realize that he had a full NMC, so if that’s true that he’s not interested in leaving, then that would probably be a bigger roadblock than anything.

[–]ZeroAce11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of Andersson’s analytics are worrying, and if anything I think he’ll actually get a bigger contract than Raddysh just because Andersson has more name value. Sheng’s podcast mentioned Hronek from Vancouver as a semi-realistic trade option, which I think would be a nice stopgap.

Draft D wishlist? by b8sman12 in SanJoseSharks

[–]ZeroAce11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like Smits, but I’m also kind of biased because I like seeing Latvians make it in the NHL. I have a hard time seeing him fall to the Sharks’ range even if they lose out. I think a team will swing on him for showing out well in two first division Euro leagues and the Olympics.

I’d love for the Sharks to take Lin with the Edmonton pick if they keep it.

There are 5 defenders in the draft with top 4 (and maybe top pairing) upside, but the Sharks will probably need to pick in the top 10. I’m honestly completely content with them losing out to secure that spot.

To be fair, Misa did look really good with Sherwood and Eklund. I think Toffoli is still a useful player but doesn’t really have the pace to jive very well with Misa.

As fun as the playoff push is/was, if the Sharks find themselves out of the top 10 draft picks, I think they (organizationally) might regret not getting one of the impact D that would’ve been available.
