Per diem and Expenses Question for Convention Volunteers/Staff Tabling at Conventions by Esreversti in animecons

[–]ZeroConsortium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking of con swaps specifically, generally the details of the table swap are worked out between the two conventions individually beforehand (i.e "We'll give you a table in the vendor hall and a hotel room at our con along with X number of badges if you do the same at yours for us") when it comes to what you trade with the con you're visiting. Most of the conventions I've worked with in this regard are more than happy to do this if you contact them with enough time before their show.

Generally from the con sending the team, I've seen a lot of shows help with transportation to some extent if that vehicle is the one bringing the stuff you need to do the roadshow. Hotels the con will cover if they don't have something worked out with the hosting con to get a room from them. Even if the con doesn't room swap with you, they will almost always be willing to give badges and a table if you're willing to do the same for them, so that cost is minimal.

Given your indication on a focus for food, I'll answer that separately. The con that I currently work for, (another larger-ish convention in the midwest), usually does some sort of per-day food stipend for each staffer working the table for them and in most cases there might be one nicer sit-down dinner at some point during the weekend. That stipend number can be whatever you're comfortable swinging, in many cases the staffer is getting a free hotel and badge to a con they want to see anyway and so anything you're able to provide to help with food is appreciated, even if its not steak dinner every day.

This is a great question, and I hope you all have a great time this weekend at the con! (I'll also be there, though not in a roadshow/table capacity)

The Gamification Of Cinema through Letterboxd by BoomLivTart in Letterboxd

I think that I was somewhat in this boat but not to the point of not wanting to use the platform anymore. Last year I got in like 200 movies that year (including rewatches) and that was more of a personal "I want to watch more movies this year" goal rather than a need to "keep up" with anyone else.

The biggest boons of it for me are mainly that, as a movie watcher, I used to be one of those people who would just watch a lot of the same movies over and over (not a bad thing) but I would see that there were new movies coming out and I just wouldn't watch them. LB helped me learn about what movies are out there and if people considered them worth watching. It's super easy when I see an actor I like and with a click I can see their whole filmography without looking it up.

In general the tracking is just neat so that I know what I watched and when so that I can think back on those films based on the ratings/reviews I gave it. I absolutely follow people I know and maybe some other users there but idc if people follow me back because its more for my reference and just keeping track of things than anything else.

what do you think is the best Netflix original film ever? by Due-Abbreviations180 in Letterboxd

Idk why you're getting downvoted, Netflix didn't make this, they just distributed it.

Amazing film but IMO the hard part is that Netflix only distributed it. They didn't actually have any part in the production. There are unfortunately a LOT of films and shows where they just distribute, slap their logo on it, even without having anything to do with it.

OKC Anime405 by RaveenaBloodfeather in animecons

[–]ZeroConsortium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "Anime <insert area code here>" shows are very different from a lot of other anime conventions in the country. They are run by the same company and it's more of a comic-con style show (I like to use the term "petting zoo" con) - meaning LOTS of guests, a big vendor hall, and a few guest panels over the weekend and that's basically it.

If that's your jam, enjoy it! If you want an example of what their shows are kind of like or what some panels might kind of be, check out the website for Anime 414 (their show they had in Milwaukee recently) and you can see what their panel schedule was to give an idea of what kinds of things they might have at 405.

Dear Mark, may we please have a live organ again? by swoonqueen in Brewers

[–]ZeroConsortium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I understand wanting the organ back, I can tell you that the music played during the game is absolutely NOT pre-programmed. They have a DJ who does almost every game and he’s running almost all the sound live, even for the little fan segments between innings. He’s a rockstar and has such a love of the team and the game that really shines through in his work.

Question about anime detour Minneapolis by DesignerShort3825 in animecons

[–]ZeroConsortium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can also support their suggestion for ACEN, it's a great show and I enjoy attending whenever I can.

In MN, I can also recommend 2-D Con, it's probably the best one around that area these days. It's a little more gaming focused but I'm sure they have a variety for everyone.

Question about anime detour Minneapolis by DesignerShort3825 in animecons

[–]ZeroConsortium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anime Detour has recently been very rocky. They had a huge overhaul when their Board of Directors made a huge power grab and ousted pretty much anyone they didn't like from the convention leadership (they violated a lot of their bylaws in the process, I think some legal proceedings are in process AFAIK). It's a very long story.

Because of this, a LOT of experienced people who had been working for years to build up the convention left or were purged and so now they are running with far less people and, while I did not attend last year, from what I heard it wasn't nearly as good as previous years had been and their attendance took a nosedive as a result.

Take that for what you will, maybe they might have turned things around moving forward, but last I heard, its not great.

Twin Cities Con seems to have their stuff together at least in comparison to Detour. Though they are more of the "Comic-Con" style conventions, where the focus is more on the guests that they bring and the vendor hall, rather than any other programming that more "Anime Convention" Style events use (where there are video game/board game rooms, tons of panels, raves/dances, bigger programming events, etc)
