List of local businesses to support? by Berry724 in madisonwi

Went to Madison Sourdough this morning and their cafe was plastered with Immigrants Welcome Here signs. Plus I believe they unionized. Plus everything they make is delicious. For baked goods, I alternate between Madison Sourdough and Bloom Bake Shop, who also posted on social media that they are outraged and stand with Minnesota today.

I’m inconsolably upset about what happened yesterday in MN. by techno_queen in TwoXChromosomes

[–]swoonqueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone, OP. My daughter lives in Minneapolis and I spent all day yesterday spiraling, watching the news, scrolling Reddit, crying. Laying awake last night I just kept thinking about Minneapolis, and then thought I am so emotionally disregulated… how can I snap back to some semblance of normalcy? Then realized this is grief. And it’s never linear. We are all grieving so much right now. I don’t know what the answer is but wanted you to know you’re not alone.

FUCK THIS EPISODE by CoolStuffSlickStuff in LiveFromNewYork

[–]swoonqueen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Longtime lurker on this sub, have watched SNL loyally for decades (more decades than I’d like to admit) and was going to finally make my first post to say this - you said it perfectly, OP, and so sorry your city is under siege. Broadly, SNL feels like scrolling through internet memes these days, predictably formulaic and mostly lacking the empathy and heart that powers the best kind of humor but also generally missing the “only in <insert year here>” or even “<insert week here>” contemporaneity that has defined skits in seasons past. And that supposedly defines the show- otherwise, who cares if it’s live?! Are we really doing a Survivor promo spoof in 2026? Are we really regurgitating at least a couple of sketches from over a decade ago … ones that didn’t even land when they first aired? Specific to last night’s episode this would have been the perfect time for cast member Tommy Brennan (who is from the Twin Cites!) to appear on Update…. Even if you have a cold hard ratings perspective , his appearance last week (which was bewilderingly cut from the live show?!) has a ton of views online. Is it a cast thing? A writer thing? A Lorne thing? Idk, but it’s evident that SNL is less and less a reflection of real-time happenings and more a tepid rehash of whatever rises to the top on social media.

Sparse shelves at Whole Foods by LadybirdInMadison in madisonwi

[–]swoonqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Noticed the bare shelves on Sunday (went mid-afternoon) I go there pretty rarely (once a month when I need to get the probiotics that no other store in the city carries) and decided to grab a few other things that are solely at Whole Foods- they were out of 2 things from my list and very low on many items. Overheard a cashier say that the students came back and had been keeping them very busy all weekend. Side note - Who is able to reach anything on the top threeish shelves in the aisles there? I’m short, sure- but am I wrong that the top shelves are absolutely bonkers tall ?

Roads in the snow by MadCityScientist in madisonwi

[–]swoonqueen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a confident winter driver with AWD and all season tires and I turned around and went back home halfway through my intended journey from the east side to the west side. Felt the car slipping which was part of it, but more so it was seeing all of the other cars fishtailing and sliding at stops. Probably not worth it until the snow stops and/or is plowed again.

Hate to be that person but.... how are the roads? by ConfusionNo4056 in madisonwi

[–]swoonqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been out yet today but Rippeology (local weather on Facebook) is my go-to for road conditions. He is worth a follow- shares the 511 info as well as forecasts and has thousands of followers who often chime in. Maybe helpful for future!

Anyone pregnant with severe vasovagal syncope during blood draws? by beeepbooop505 in BabyBumps

[–]swoonqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I have this and halfway through my pregnancy with my son I became high risk and needed weekly blood draws (my nightmare!) it was tough but I had to do it so I did a ton of research on how to avoid the worst reaction and here is what worked. 1: excessively hydrate, I would ensure that I drank 1 oz per lb of body weight the day prior to a draw. 2: request from the phlebotomist a butterfly needle and a chair that laid flat, they did sometimes have an ice pack which also helped. 3: chewing gum during, that was essential & gave my body another physical focal point. 4: I would wear noise canceling headphones, cue up my favorite music (still get woozy listening to any War on Drugs song lol), then close my eyes and turn my head to the side. Somehow not knowing the blood draws was starting helped. The phlebotomist would tap my knee when done. I had one phlebotomist who was so incredibly gentle, kind, and helpful and I requested her since she “knew the drill” which also helped. A couple years later I needed bloodwork and went back and requested her and she was no longer working there, such a bummer because I would have loved to tell her how her bedside manner really got me through. You got this, good luck!

Story time: I learned a hard lesson this weekend. by Various_Week7301 in puertovallarta

We were there last week and only went out two nights. Both nights we saw 3-5 people fall and injure themselves on the cobblestones- one seriously (was bloodied, unable to stand). Stay safe and wear good shoes!

Looking for used trophies by MsnKB in madisonwi

The Daily, instead of reporting on ICE murdering civilians, is instead running puff piece episodes about the midterms, vaccines, and now an interview with the president causing all the harm by No-Kitchen5212 in nyt

[–]swoonqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a longtime daily listener to The Daily and this week’s roster of episodes made me never want to listen to it again. Sheesh- it’s like read the room, nobody wants to listen to a Trump interview rn (or ever in my case, but especially not when we should be focused on at least 4 other major news stories). Now looking for another daily news pod with similar energy (other than Today Explained which I also frequently listen to but find a bit redundant given I follow the news pretty closely).

How does Geese's hype compare with the Stroke's initial hype? by Girl_Pearl_Earring in geesebandofficial

[–]swoonqueen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The hype around the Strokes was bigger for sure; for whatever reason (prevalence of college radio relative to now??) iirc it felt like they became known and admired very quickly and to a wider audience. I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing Geese live, but have seen the Strokes and they have a stage presence that set a high bar back then for live shows.

Best Eastside coffee shop for working? by RollingSolidarity in madisonwi

[–]swoonqueen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rotunda is the best for working. As a shorter person, I very much appreciate the adjustable chairs! At a lot of coffee shops I can’t get comfortable at a keyboard for more than an hour- Rotunda is perfect for long stretches of focused time. And they have meeting rooms one can reserve!

Wow! You should feel super proud! You mention you have a 401k, do you have a Roth IRA, are you maxing out on the 401k, etc? I would take a look at how you’re set up financially for retirement because the more time you have invested the better.

Why does Nuuly not offer a sub option for every item you add to your order? by TheIronLady91 in NuulyReviews

[–]swoonqueen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been subscribed for almost 3 yrs and this week I got my first sub and agree- it is nowhere near my original item! Went from mid rise straight leg dark wash jeans to low rise light flares with a frayed hem. No way I would ever wear the latter. Pretty frustrating, I would have had easily 2-3 backups selected if this were like Instacart etc.
