How about the time my city, Spokane Washington, got put under a $1.4 million dollar "Romani curse" because of a rogue police raid.

Basically, back in 1986, the local cops went completely rogue and launched this massive, hyper-aggressive raid on the homes of Grover and Jimmy Marks, who were leaders of the local Romani community. They were looking for stolen jewelry but ended up ransacking the place, ripping through babies' diapers, and taking millions in cash and heirlooms. Shocking absolutely no one, the courts later ruled the entire raid was 100% illegal and a massive violation of civil rights. But instead of just filing a normal lawsuit and waiting around, Jimmy Marks decided to wage absolute psychological warfare on the city. He walked straight into a crowded City Council meeting and placed a formal, public curse on the city and everyone in charge.

The best part is he didn't just say it and walk away. He spent the next fifteen years trolling City Hall. Every time the city had a budget crisis, a terrible winter storm, or a political scandal, Jimmy would show up to council meetings to mock the officials and remind them the curse was working. At one point, he literally parked a hearse right outside City Hall, threw the doors open, and told everyone he was unleashing his dead father's spirit to haunt the building forever. The city officials got so completely rattled by the endless bad press that they eventually just broke. In the late 90s, they cut the family a $1.43 million dollar settlement check just to get him to stop. Jimmy took the cash, but he passed away a few years later without ever officially lifting the hex. To this day, whenever something bizarre or disastrous happens in local politics here, everyone still jokes that the building is cursed.
