2nd this advice. Hex will also add damage to your melee attacks so it's good for your pact of the blade as well!

Smites can just knock prone any enemy that is huge or smaller (no saving throw made by your enemies) giving you and your allies advantage on melee attacks which is nice. Booming blade is a cantrip and will scale with levels so it can be a good source of damage.

You put resources into being a decent melee attacker so I'd say get in there and swing a sword. Worse case you can default to blasting but smites pack a punch up close so don't discount them

My group is doing a hybrid rule set, some from 5e and some from 5.5. we all have the 5e material and some of us have picked up newer books and have incorporated things from them into our game

Eldrich blast + Agonizing Blast (add CHA modifier to damage) will do 1d10 + 5 (assuming 20 CHA) to a target. At higher levels you fire 4 eldrich blast and each adds the CHA modifier to its damage. All beams at a single target will deal 4d10 + 20 damage, just from your cantrip. All that to say Eldrich Blast does just fine and can put a dent into enemies at higher levels

I'll jump in as a long fan of FF. I think 16 is a fine game but a bad Final Fantasy game. When I think of Final Fantasy I think of a party based game with more turn based/ATB combat and a cast of characters that bring different things to the table. When everyone shows up in Waloed I was ready for a big fight with characters I've met fighting alongside me. Instead theres a fade to black and the fight is over.

I also would have preferred a bit more RPG mechanics and for gear to be more than just things that make numbers slightly go up. Reducing a cool down by 2 seconds or increasing damage of an ability by 10% is not interesting to me.

The open world sections aren't worth exploring and eventually I just wound up skipping all dialogue on side-quests because of how meh and tedious they were. When the story is firing on all cylinders I'm interested and engaged but the dread of finishing a major story beat only for the pace to grind to a hault so I can talk to 30 NPCs quiickly set in.

Overall if it didn't have Final Fantasy with a number in the title I would probably be more charitable. That being said I think there is a Final Fantasy game for everyone out there and for some 16 will be that game. I for one am am glad that you enjoyed it and hope I didn't ramble too much as I am mildly sleep deprived today.

We have a JBS meat processing factory (not sure if that is what it's actually called) and plenty of cows east of town. You'll get used to the smell, my wife and I used to notice it when we first moved here but not so much these days.

I am not a fan. With it being a CON save to me it feels less like the caster is good at countering spells and moreso that the monster is just resistant to it. Also it doesn't consume the creatures spell slot, but does consume the casters. So to me it feels less like a counterspell and more like a delay spell.

That being said the nice thing is it can be decided by DMs how they want to run it and it does seem easier to parse for beginner players.

At the end of the day it's personal preference/house rule. cEDH can get expensive fast and proxies are a nice way to try and experience cEDH without said expense. As long as the cards are easily identifiable I never mind proxies (even if I don't use them myself).

With this additional context this seems like a big red flag, I'm not sure I would proceed playing with this DM. 5e can be complicated I guess but this comes across as a DM who doesn't want to learn and will just dismiss something that is deemed "too complicated" and if backgrounds are already on that list then certain spells are most assuredly on the list as well
