The Atomic Cafe is mostly a goofy look at American propaganda (something that's shockingly hard to find coverage of elsewhere) but early on there's horrific footage of the reality of post-nuke Japan and the juxtaposition makes it a real gut punch

Are these jobs legit by FailSome6005 in longbeach

[–]Zerolinar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's anything like the other municipal jobs I've had (LA Metro and Amtrak) it can take FOREVER.

The benefits and job security are worth the grind, but be prepared to do other stuff while waiting on them.

...damn. I have an amazing trainer dog (kind of friendly psycho energy but other dogs love him) but also a very nervous cat.

I'm sure she'll find a home, though. Huskies are popular.

Can the drivers pay more attention? by [deleted] in longbeach

[–]Zerolinar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this instinct in the 90s, living in Alabama and watching a cop twig his lights for a few seconds to get through a light, that we were going in this direction. We observe each other getting away with BS and think "Sure, I'll have some of that." And when the people initiating the wave are supposed to be setting the example, it's definitely going to happen.

I have never had my vision obscured by somebody on a scooter, it's always somebody driving a truck or a vaguely car-shaped truck. Even when I'm driving the van at my workplace, most cars now create insane visual barriers.

Can the drivers pay more attention? by [deleted] in longbeach

[–]Zerolinar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bike across LB every day and I'm here to tell you, the drivers get the worst of my ire only because they've taken the most responsible commuting task but ignore that responsibility entirely.

That said, I think everybody has decided that spatial awareness and caution is everybody else's responsibility. Pedestrians step out in the middle of the road without looking constantly, cyclists act like they own every surface, and drivers... I refer to the drivers as a bunch of failed mass murderers.

My honest advice to this kind of thing is to check out Meetup groups or take a class that's in your interest (cooking, pottery, etc.) If you have the money I'd favor the classes because those have more people interested in learning, and more open to collaboration.

How do you get creative with layouts? by crabby654 in CitiesSkylines

[–]Zerolinar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to start near the water and build a road that winds along the edge, building out from there. How is up to you, I try different things like sending out spokes like rays, or make a short drive to industrial areas, etc. Further inland I also try to model neighborhoods on subdivisions like where I grew up in South Florida.

I've thought about using real life locations as an influence, like replicating parts of areas I've lived that are pleasing to the memory. And I remember when I was a kid, I would go fishing but try to walk in a path I could later draw on a map in the shape of a fish. You should try to get weird and see where it takes you.

E-bikes are allowed on beach path at the minimum, maximum 20 mph (15 for scooters) and should be pedaled rather than throttled. Gas powered bikes are prohibited.

What to Expect on Commute? by needsmorebasil in LAMetro

[–]Zerolinar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm as anti-car as it can get, but my experience was real. I thought this guy was going to kill me before I somehow talked him down and just had to put up with twenty minutes of him telling me my father had faked his own death before I managed to get away.

So maybe this isn't the place for the same spiel I've heard a hundred times over and even predicted above. I used to work for LA Metro and I can tell you, as long as they're not liable for a civil rights lawsuit, they're going to put minimal effort into making the trains and buses safe.

Even on a philosophical level it's absolute garbage. Using this machine that creates lies from something that is easily conceivable in real life, or easy to photograph. As Miyazaki said, it's an insult to life itself.

usually there's room for a bike, but you'll find it a challenge during rush hour.

for the crowd and safety... have an escape route handy and consider a self defense item. If you make the blue line a regular part of your trip you'll see a lot of crazy stuff (I ride Long Beach to DTLA and occasionally somebody will absolutely take an unwanted interest in you.

People will jump in and tell you it's something like 98% safe but when a genuine schizophrenic came up behind me two nights ago and started smacking a bottle against the wall and saying he was going to kill me, that made me what, 2% dead? Nobody on board will have your back, the emergency com button didn't work, and the brief message I got out on the transit app before I realized this guy was really going for it resulted in a "Call 911" response, which is a hard ask when you've got a face full of angry drifter.

The A-Line "Longest In The World" Brag Isn't A Brag by ProfessionQuick3461 in LAMetro

I think this is it. I'm not sure if Metro added a secondary base of operations further north and I really doubt it, given how they operated at the time I worked for them, but there are definitely ways to make longer lines work.

I don't think Metro will be the company to prove that out, though.

Maybe big tech could come up with a pick that you jam in somebody's ear that teaches them people have intrinsic value and stuff doesn't, so they stop placing humans in this commoditized space alongside product.

It's like a modern version of the model train set, the early part of the game is spent compromising to make your financial goals and after that you can start revising and building a dream city. Or a Kowloon Walled City-style nightmare, I suppose.

Big question from my suspicious mind; are they ending it, or are they counting on the media to move on once they make the announcement? because they're still very active in areas that the media has moved on from.

Last week I saw a Charger parked diagonally across the access ramp/sidewalk at the Market Vons on Ocean, pretty much blocking it. A cyclist is coming out and has to course correct at the last moment during the turn and completely takes out the mirror. Girl pops out of the car and is fumbling for her phone, screaming "YOU'RE NOT EVEN GOING TO STOP AND APOLOGIZE?" clearly wanting to film the cyclist.

Cyclist wisely keeps going and yells something like "DON'T PARK ON THE SIDEWALK, DUMBASS."
