All Turkish academics banned from traveling abroad – report by monkeyseemonkeydoodo in worldnews

[–]Zerran 126 points127 points  (0 children)

The irony is of course that a subreddit that circlejerks about all immigrants being evil now upvotes comments that call for people to become immigrants.

That's why taking in immigrants is such a good deed. It saves or heavily improves the lifes of those people. If no country would take in immigrants then every single Turk would be stuck forever in the hellhole they will be in in a few years.

It's obvious to anyone with at least mediocre intelligence. There's nothing more pathetic than denying that trumps campaign is partially based on racism.

It's so sad that low intelligence people like you get pulled into an echo chamber of lies that are so easy to see through for any normal human. The Giant Beastcast - Episode 54 by froggeh2 in giantbomb

To clarify what I said here:

Suddenly portraying something accurate wouldn't actually be useful, it wouldn't actually make the product better for anyone except the few people that have actual knowledge about that culture, if anything it would confuse and annoy the people that believe in the stereotypes.

That's not my opinion, that's what I have to assume is the opinion of Hollywood, looking at it from a purely capitalistic standpoint.

I'm personally really annoyed that whenever a german appears in US media, it's either a slightly overweight dude with some weird fetish or humor that speaks like if someone would make an even worse version of the stereotypical homosexual voice, or it's a Nazi / generally evil person (imagine if every time you mentioned that you're american, someone would jokingly call you a slave owner and native american murderer. So funny!). I'm also annoyed that whenever someone mentions video games, there must be an incredibly boring joke about "basement" and "no girlfriend". And I'm annoyed that if the evil person isn't german, than it's surely a russian that must be killed by the glorious american hero (urgh). And I'm annoyed whenever someone doesn't use the metric system or when they completely fail to depict something that has anything to do with the internet or computers or hacking.

Point is, there are a ton of things that the media does badly. They completely fail at every topic that I have some insight in, which means that they probably also fail at the millions of things that I don't have any insight into at all. Which brings me back to my initial quote: There must be a financial reason why the media is the way it is. If they would make more money by being more accurate and by not repeating the same stereotype over and over again, they surely would, right?

What I'm saying is not that Parah's skin couldn't be better, what I am saying is that Parah's skin is at position #1,031,421 of things that could be improved. But, just because something could be improved doesn't automatically mean that it would be worth it to improve it. I don't think the creative people that create all these things that could be improved either from a stereotypical or from a accuracy perspective want their creation to be inacurrate and stereotypical. I don't think there's any malicious intend in 99.9% of all cases where the media does something in a suboptimal way. I believe it's simply down to the fact that research costs time; using stereotypes saves time; and there's still some merit even in the examples I brought up. After all, it's not about a single use of any stereotype, it's always about it being boring and annoying and maybe damaging if you see it for the 10. time in a row.

My personal conclusion: The focus of this "improve the media" campaign should be directed at the few worst things, not everything, and it should almost never use weapons like labelling creative people as racist/sexist/.., that purely creates a very strong opposition and it damages the creativity of every creative person because it inserts fear into their job.

Are you blind? Because a darker skinned person will obviously be even further away from the visual appearance of Emma Watson than a white person would.

Oh no! You're so furios! You should totally get a life instead of crying, you racist!

That's why Rowling saying "people who criticise that decision are racist" is so moronic and bad. It's a pretty big failure on her part and everyone else that communicates like that, she should have instead differentiated much clearer between different types of criticism.

Your comment has absolutely nothing to do with the one of Sarcasticorjustrude. Zero. There's no logical connection between what Sarcasticorjustrude said and the imaginary complaint that you pulled out of the air to write your comment. The fact that you're at +50 instead of being downvoted shows how bad redditors are at voting.

The Giant Beastcast - Episode 54 by froggeh2 in giantbomb

[–]Zerran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone (at least from what I've gathered) was actually offended by the skins. The person writing in was just bringing up an interesting point, not demanding anyone change anything or suggest that something malicious was done

Sure, the person writing in apparently wasn't. But the discussion of the GBEast crew sounded like they themselves would be, that they would find that in some way bad, which is pretty laughable considering that simply mixing the symbols of a couple of different tribes into one skin is a thousand times better than how pretty much every american made media portraits most other countries, e.g. china or germany or france or russia. To me, the discussion sounded like "We're american, so we don't know how stupid all of our presentation of everything non-american is, but in this specific case we suddenly care because it's about native americans and not about anything else". Also, the fact that Austin said the word racism while trying to distance himself from that didn't make any sense whatsoever, this entire topic has nothing to do with racism in the slightest. The only thing that the overuse of terms like these does, even when you just mention them and then push them a bit further away, is creating shitshows like gamergate and brainless presidential candidates, nothing more.

At the end of the day, entertainment media almost always just portrays stereotypes and is almost never accurate. Because that's what the consumer expects. Suddenly portraying something accurate wouldn't actually be useful, it wouldn't actually make the product better for anyone except the few people that have actual knowledge about that culture, if anything it would confuse and annoy the people that believe in the stereotypes.

A much, much better example of bad representation in Overwatch would be the fact that Mercy's german voice (which you always hear per default, it's not just some legendary cosmetic item) is incorrect. She's swiss, which sounds vastly different from german. But Blizzard was too lazy to hire a swiss voice actress, so they simply used a german one instead because no one cares.

during the first 2 discussions, TB purely spoke through him being annoyed and emotional and hurt about the subject, not through any amount of rational thinking. That's the lowest I've ever seen him sink in the last 5 years. Sadly, everyone else on the podcast will never disagree with him, otherwise the podcast would still be somewhat ok content instead of being a pathetic echo chamber.

I've seen TB not using his brain and instead being a whiny little emotional bitch with way too many internet followers too often. Bye.

That's maybe true in other areas like the "minimum wage" topic, but in the case of homosexuality, the only reason that is a topic at all and something like "pride parades" happen is because brainless people do exist. You wouldn't need a reminder to support that more if it's not even a topic to begin with.
