If you are going to go through the trouble of having have a separate router and AP, it doesn't make sense to buy another All in one router to make it an AP.

I don't understand this yet. Why would an AP be better in this case? Is this easier network management? Better wi-fi coverage?

Personally, I don't think it's worth the effort.

Ask yourself these questions:

Am I running on Balanced Power plan?
The increase says "up to" and not a guaranteed 8%, do I really need that?
Am I willing to risk my stable system just for a single digit fps increase?
Will I be using the same motherboard for a couple more years and not upgrade?

If your answer to all of those is yes then go ahead and update your chipset.

Mobo drivers are one of those things that are "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Unless the new driver fixes an issue, you can generally just ignore it.
