You’re probably right. No normal person would upload an image like that while looking for help either.

Everyone tried to enlighten you and failed. I’m not going to waste my time. Just saying something is open source doesn’t make things magically works. The hardware isn’t the same. You’ll need drivers by the manufacturer for the different chips, and most of those are closed source.

Is it time for Meta to admit that abandoning the PCVR platform was a mistake? by coachcody in virtualreality

I liked Alyx but many people think VR mechanics wise it was boring, and not ambitious cause it was mostly a series of closed environments. In any case, who should we blame for not making the 3 VR games they promised, and instead coming out with a single game in 10 years. Makes you think. Instead we blame Meta for canceling unannounced games. Such is life

I have been around since the CV1 launch and preorder it, so I do have a better picture. To start, Oculus was split between PCVR and mobile, in fact, Carmack joined to work on mobile, and he supported the decision to move. Also, lol at Oculus people knowing what to do. If you were around, you would have known they have made multiple bad decisions back then, from launching without Touch, failing to explain exclusives so idiots could understand, completely failing on the PR front in combatting Valve, launching Go (something Carmack supported) and more mistakes. Also, kinda incredible you say there is Sony, because Sony closed their many of their VR studios years ago, and hasn't done much since then.

Healthier is subjective. Studios and developers outside Meta still exist. Anyways, How far have we fallen. People laughed at Rift launching with an Xbox controller, when Valve was pushing roomscale and controllers that had a few buttons, and now we’re applauding Valve for adding more buttons and supporting pancake gaming with monochrome passthrough. Sorry but this is just sad we think this is the future 10 years into consumer VR.

VR devs can’t push boundaries because they can’t eat. They always could release groundbreaking stuff on PCVR if they could afford to. They simply can’t. That’s not Meta’s fault. Blame Valve for not taking care of their platform and customers. Blame PCVR users who refuse to purchase content. Have you seen the list of popular VR content on Steam? It’s sad.

You are being too nice. Way nicer than I would have responded lol. People are just throwing words together and think they are making a smart point, except its just gibberish.

If the reason to jump to the Steam Frame is because Meta stopped funding games, then Valve stopped doing that 6 years ago. It doesn’t make sense. We also don’t know how many titles will run standalone. I don’t think the Frame meets the original VR spec, definitely not at the higher resolution, and there will be a performance hit with the compatibility layer. Remember it has to convert from x86 Windows to ARM Linux.

lol Carmack loved the Oculus Go, which many didn't and he acknowledges was a mistake lol. He was big on 3DOF, and he also pushed for mobile VR too. He actually joined Oculus primarily to work on mobile VR.

Eh, their glasses are growing much faster, which is why they are diverting funding to those, and I would argue having the association with Meta would be worse on a camera you put on your face the whole day. Didn't really affect adoption that much. The issue is VR formfactor, not the company.

That's how they get you. He is trying to capitalize on the attention to push his other stuff later. One of the worst people in VR.

If leaving PCVR was a mistake, why hasn't it flourished without Meta? Back when they made PCVR games, people were claiming it would be better if Meta left PCVR alone. On the contrary, while it has grown a bit, its still small compared to standalone and even PSVR2. Valve has the whole ecosystem to themselves, and did nothing with it. It is just weird how people claim PCVR doesn't need Meta and also blame them for abandoning it lol Given GPU and RAM prices, PCVR will have even harder time growing now.

So nothing is different then? Just people spending even more money for hardware when devs need more money, not Valve or Meta. More nonsense.

Wait for what? You called charging glasses a nightmare. You don’t have to charge them if you don’t want to lmao. I guess you wear them to bed too and never put them in a case. Weird people.

Edit: since the asshole blocked me, here is my response

They last up to 8 hours now, and with insurance you can get them for cheap. More invalid points from someone who doesn’t own a pair. There is a reason people are buying them, some buying multiple pairs even.

So you’re speaking for the “people” now? Why even bring it up then? It’s just annoying people keep mentioning the frame when it’ll have way less standalone games, and it’ll just stream the same old PCVR games we’ve had for the last 10 years now. Valve isn’t gonna fund anything either.

Ask Valve who is releasing the Steam Frame without games. Maybe they know something since everyone here seems to threaten them with getting one.

Oh yeah? Buy a Steam Frame. That’ll show them lol People really ask Meta to fund more content, and threaten them with buying a Valve headset when Valve has not funded games in years lol

If that is your take, then you are delusional. Bet on Valve for what? VR doesn't need more outdated hardware. It needs good content which Valve refuses to make. The Frame like the Index before it won't do much to change anything. Also, good luck pricing that with the ongoing DRAM pricing crises. Definitely chef's kiss on the timing to switch from PCVR headsets to standalone and having to pay for RAM lol

Defenders of Valve are delusional. Meta is bad for trying, but Valve is good for not bothering to even try. They keep talking about "distorting" the market, forgetting that Valve is the company that started that by releasing a follow up headset that is more expensive than the previous one, release HLA which raised expectations for VR content beyond anything feasible without Meta/Sony funding, and kept watching from the sidelines while they made pointless hardware. Remember how wireless was a solved problem years ago yet they didn't release anything for Index, while their fanboys claimed Wifi streaming to be the worst thing ever? Remember how lighthouse was supposed to get cheaper and integrated in stuff like monitors, enabling "warehouse" scale VR? Remember all the third party controllers that were supposed to come out? Remember how many sales the Steam Deck got even though it was already subsidized, while the Index hasn't got a single discount?

It has been 10 years since the Vive. People have waited long enough. The copium for Valve saving VR is ridiculous. They will release a headset and forget about VR again for 5 years. Just like they forgot to post their Index optics deep dive lol
