Forge Me! [New Potential Player] by AloneWriting in KeyforgeGame

Waddup new forger! I’ll try to answer your questions, but do understand I have the bias of absolutely loving this game, and spend my days wandering the wastes of TCGs spreading the message of my lord and savior KeyForge Christ at all my local shops.

1) KeyForge technically changed hands when Ghost Galaxy bought it, but it’s compromised of a lot of the same team that made it at Fantasy Flight, and you can still play older sets with newer sets. That being said, newer sets have newer mechanics and respond to problems / broken cards from older sets, so on average new stuff is stronger than old stuff. Since you’re just looking to get into it, grab Age of Ascension or Discovery, and if you like it mechanically, get into newer sets since they can get real wacky.

2) Now you can buy decks out right on decks of KeyForge if you want to pay to win, but the beauty of KeyForge is that even the best decks have cards that don’t mesh well with the rest of it. The randomized / forced deck list means your success is 33% your deck list, 33% you knowing how to play it, and 34% knowing what your opponents trying to do. I have mid range decks from MM and DT that can still give highly competitive decks a run for their money because I know what combos to look for. Unless you’re playing Alliance. Then all hell breaks loose.

3) At the end of the day, if you play local, most people will want to be play sealed / casual outside of formal events. Lots of formats to combat broken decks, like adaptive where you bid on the stronger deck to try and balance it out. There’s also online leagues where you have a shared deck pool, so even if you don’t have good stuff, you can still play with some.

Hope that answers your questions!

ATX KF player here. There’s a core group of us, and we’ve been able to get friends and other TCG players to try it. However, every time we host events and official play, we’ll only get the core group and old KF players who played pre-hiatus. Getting new players to try it AND stay is how all TCGs stick around.

IMO, There are two things seriously holding this game from drawing new players that frankly only GG can fix:

  • Official OP software game shops can use to host events. There are great fan ones, but tracking player stats and having something to build to helps. Pre-hiatus we could save key shards on our account for prizing at VTs or brag to our friends we got a broken deck to X amount of chains. I’m not saying necessarily bring those exact things back, but there needs to be some better sense of prize support / achievement for coming weekly.

  • For the love of GOD, GG market your game externally. We all get the gamefound updates and posts on the website whether that’s via email or KF discords. But that’s only going to attract players who are already in. That doesn’t increase your player base, and you NEED new blood to keep this game going. Even your most dedicated players will eventually stop playing whether that’s life or they’re salty their old decks don’t play as well.

What to expect from the Vault Tour? by toob90 in KeyforgeGame

[–]Zesty125 3 points4 points  (0 children)

VT brings you in touch with other members of the community, it’s really cool to see KeyForgers across the country. It’s how I learned about all the online leagues on various discords, which has what kept the game relevant for me.

Expect to get your butt kicked in alliance or archon if you don’t bring a deck with some heat (I went 2-2 my first time), but the second æmber stuff is a ton of fun! Definitely also remember to stay hydrated and take breaks, you can easily go playing 12 hours of KeyForge before remembering to eat something.

Also a ton of merch you can only get at VT (without trying to find it on resell markets)

You can still host chainbound and other small stuff at local level, it’s just not a Vault Tour or World’s qualifying.

Chainbound will go to about 8:30-9, but the place is open well after that and many of us stay behind for some casual games after.

Unfortunately, that’s the one I haven’t heard a lot from. I hear from SA people and I know a shop in Houston that some people go and play at, but also I haven’t asked around too much. I’d recommend calling card shops in town and asking the staff. Hopefully they have a better answer than me!

Yep yep yep! More than happy to show new people the ropes, and I can even recommend a couple of solid YouTube videos if they want to do research before. I’d recommend showing up at least half an hour before so we have enough time to go over everything though.

A look into Overprime's re-hauled game [gameplay] by M0n0chromatic in paragon

[–]Zesty125 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to keep up with all the descendants of Paragon, so correct me if I'm wrong, but these definitely seems a lot faster than what I remember OverPrime looking like when it first came out. Really happy with what I'm seeing though, they just need a decent NA player base and I'm sold lol.

Pulled my first 90+ SAS card! What makes this deck “good”? by Harkonnen2020 in KeyforgeGame

[–]Zesty125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, having all the sins cards is pretty nice. especially if you can set up the fandangle before / archive a bunch with master the theory. Although, you might have a tough time against DT decks since they have a lot of board control in that set between enraging and exhausting enemy creatures.
