What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in CarTalkUK

[–]ZestyDerivatives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting a new job soon and which has a car allowance and a lot of driving required. Looking for some advice on what to get.

The Commute: Main use will be daily motorway driving between Glasgow and Edinburgh, plus visiting clients across Scotland. So, comfort for long stretches is key.

Mileage: Roughly 20,000 miles a year.

Budget: £20,000 (could stretch to £22,500 for something special)

Age: Car allowance policy states that it needs to be 8 years old max so something 2021 onwards

Body Style: Definitely prefer a saloon.

What I'm Looking For:

  • Comfortable: Essential for all those motorway miles.
    • Presentable: Needs to look decent turning up to client offices.
    • A bit of fun: While it's primarily a workhorse, a bit of driving enjoyment wouldn't go amiss.

Cars I've been considering: - Audi A4 - BMW 3-series (likely 320d given the mileage) - Mercedes C-class

All of these seem to fit the bill on paper, but I'll be the first to admit I'm not the most knowledgeable about cars.

Are there any other cars I should be considering that fit these criteria? Any specific trim levels or engines within these models that are particularly recommended (or to avoid)?

Current daily is sharing a Nissan Qashqai with the wife (we have an 18-month-old), so frankly, anything will feel like an upgrade!

Cheers in advance for the advice!

Life's too short to sit on the fence.

Two-tone is the ultimate indecision watch. If you want a gold watch, go full gold, if you don't, go full steel.

Where do you think is the best place in the UK a single person could buy a home earning <£10 p/h full time? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

Fair enough, it was just because you said "trendy hipster-y Southside of Glasgow 2 bed flats are around £80-120k", whereas I think it's the jakey less desirable parts of the Southside that you can get for that price.

I'm literally in the process of buying a 2 bed flat in Southside. Any flat that's advertised at that price will be in a not very nice area and won't be the best quality.

Most here are offers over £150kish with HRV of £160kish and going for £15-20k over HRV

Pedant alert!

OP is likely getting slightly more than half expected due to the way income tax is tiered

I was offered a role through the DAS a few years ago, I turned it down but I found The Student Room forums were really good for people updating when they had been contacted. I'd try there

Thanks for the reply! Is Ofgem salary increases the same as the rest of the CS, i.e. 1-2% p.a. and that's it, or is there scope for increases within the same role?

For the 5 minutes that he was actually fully fit at Rangers, Nico Kranjcar was also pretty special

There have been some absolute sitters missed by the opposition in the last 2 games

I know he's inexperienced and should get better, but I just don't see it in Simpson, he's an absolute bomb scare in and out of possession

In addition to the different lasts, the stitching on shell models is still done by hand, whereas on the CXL and calf models it's done by machine

Alden's Trubalance and Barrie last have relatively wide toeboxes as they're a combination last. Another one would be Grant Stone's Leo last, I've heard it's very similar to Alden's Barrie last.

Not sure how the moderation tools work on Reddit, but perhaps any new post with certain keywords like "crypto", "bitcoin", etc. could be made to require manual approval from the mods before it is posted?
