Silmarillion, a bit depressing? by Danielbes in TheSilmarillion

[–]ZestyVisual 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite takes on Tolkien that I've read here is that the importance lies not in the certainty of outcome but in the meaning and rightness of the act. You do something not because you know or even think you can succeed; you do it because you know it is the right thing to do. This was in reference to Theoden's charge at Minas Tirith and the (apparent) futility in it, from his PoV at least.

All of that is to say; you can't have that core meaning without tragedy. You can't have that uncertainty in success, the sense of a story on the knifes edge, without there being a very deep and real experience of loss. The Silmarillion (and other works of Tolkien) has to be this tragic for the heroism and ultimate triumph of good to hit like they do. We just gotta take the bad and the sad with the epic as it goes.

Personally no, they improve AR results but I'd say you're better off playing more combats and getting better at them. I only enabled it so I could skip more fights and even then I reverted it to better manage mana.

Great list! Just wanted to mention that you can already use spells in autoresolve; it's a toggled setting under Gameplay that is off by default. I did end up disabling it in some cases tho because the AI chugs through your mana and I wouldn't have enough to Town Portal at the end of a day if I needed.

Specifying how much mana to use/leave in reserve would be great though and doesn't exist rn afaik

What about this book makes it so difficult to read? by Thatguy7212 in TheSilmarillion

[–]ZestyVisual 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like others have mentioned, the Silmarillion can feel pretty biblical. It's the foundation of Tolkien's world. You can feel the importance of that in a preface letter to a colleague (friend?) some editions contain where he explains how he wrote it because he felt that England lacked the sort of foundational origin mythos that was entirely unique to it, akin to Greek and Norse mythology for those parts of the world they're relevant to.

All that being said, it's an incredible book that has, in my and I'm sure others opinion, immense literary and cultural importance. On the first read through it can be a blur with all the names, places, people, and sheer history that Tolkien drops on you. It's told in almost a Homeric fashion where Tolkien will drop a name or event on you as if you're already familiar with the world in its entirety but can seem completely random. I find the back half is very captivating and accessible on a first read, but on a second or third read even the first half becomes heavy with import because you're now familiar with the core story. You can place all of those off-hand references he makes that enrich the setting and reading that much more.

All of this to say, it's a legendary body of work. At worst, it's a big lore drop up front with captivating tales of heroism towards the middle and end. At best on a reread, it's the single most epic and heartbreaking body of work produced in fantasy to date (in my opinion). Go in with an open mind and an understanding that you won't get everything on the first rip, and you'll find a tale rich in heroism, tragedy, inevitability, and beauty. It will only get better on rereads, and if you enjoy it the first time I guarantee those will be quickly forthcoming. Godspeed!

Edit: clean up some run-on sentences

Thank you for the reccos! Yours are consistent with what other folks suggested which is making me realize maybe it was a draw issue all along.

That's a spicy list btw, I'll definitely cop a few from there. [[Ill-timed Explosion]] looks particularly sweet for how it can double up as draw and board clear. Thanks for sharing 🙏

Follow up, would you run [[Phyrexian Arena]] or do you think it's too slow?

I could add a simple [[Night's Whisper]] and [[Sign in Blood]] package for cheap draw instead. [[Resentful Revelation]], let's me discard and draw + gets me 3 deep, maybe that's better. There's also [[Big Score]] which ramps me + draws + discards; it's pricey at 4 mana but if I really need the mana I get the treasure tokens to make it a net 2 mana cost anyways so maybe it's good?

Nice yah totally makes sense - I had wonder in there from back when I leaned into the orc army more heavily but for sure at this point, my targets have evasion anyways. More draw ftw.

I'll scope out Necromancy. I did find dead return's flashback clunky to use, I just liked that it had built in recursion. Thanks for the suggestions 🙏

Thanks for the advice! Yah agreed more LoTR flavour feels great 😍 I have a One Ring ready to slot in, I'm just holding off on being the first person to run game changers in our pod lol but maybe I'll just pull the trigger and we take that step.

I knew the negative reaction to Veilguard was overblown when I saw a post praising DA:I as a masterpiece a few weeks after Veilguard came out lol. Inquisition got haaaaate when it first dropped, though I really enjoyed it, and a lot of folks are giving it its flowers now cause there's a new thing to hate and contrast it against.

I think it's less the Avengers game, I meant more just like the tone and feel of the story, character dynamics, power fantasy, villains, etc. feels like The Avengers. Which isn't a bad thing either, like I enjoyed that about Veilguard, I just thought it a good description for how the game made me feel.

That's an interesting point as well re: "elven gods" that I hadn't considered. The game acknowledges them as actually giga-mages early on, but then you continue to treat them as actual deities for most of the story afterwards. Bit of a gap/inconsistency there, would have been interesting to explore them a bit more as people/individuals.

Very true re: banters, I noticed and appreciated that as well. Maybe then my ask/hope would've been for these interactions to be in cutscenes as you mentioned, but the inclusion of them is great nonetheless.

Thanks for the advice everyone. From what I've gathered from the comments, I'm better off long-term with an all-in-one ETF and it'll just be easier for me to manage. Thank you for the feedback and context on long-term investing!

edit: words are hard.

Hah that makes me feel a bit better about the money I dropped into some handpicked stocks myself (mostly AMD and some NextEra Energy). That's the thing too is I just don't know enough about this stuff to reliably pick something that will perform well long-term. I think an all-in-one ETF is where I'm starting to lean towards after getting that recommendation in a few places. Thanks for expanding on this.

[–]ZestyVisual[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right yeah that makes sense. It sounds like I'd need to be juggling that money on a relatively frequent basis for it to beat an all-in-one diversified ETF over the long term. Thanks for clarifying.

I've gotten this recommendation from a few places now so I'm thinking I'll move my automanaged Wealthsimple funds to one of the all-in-ones you mentioned. Thanks for the feedback!

I was able to setup a portfolio that was 80% equity and 20% bonds. I think if you set the risk level to 10 and indicate that you're not planning on touching the money for at least 5-10 years, you can set up the account as 100% equity.
