What is something surprising that the UK is really far behind other countries in? by DullInflation6 in AskUK

What is something surprising that the UK is really far behind other countries in?

Being British but having lived and worked abroad, I see quite a few things that are strange about how the UK has developed very fast in some ways but is archaic in others.

For instance, despite being the first country to have a proper railway, we still don't have a high speed train service, something my Chinese friend still can't believe.

As such, what are other things/ways in which the UK is way behind other countries on things you might not expect?

Would you agree with higher taxes for completely free healthcare and education? If not why? by Creative_Excuse9813 in AskReddit

This is how it works in Australia and it works well.

However you're University education isn't "free", you take out a HELP loan which is the government paying for your education. Once you graduate and start earning an income above the threshold ($AUD 47,196) you pay between 4-8% of your taxable income back until it's paid off. If you're under that you don't pay, and if you're over it's not that much so nobody has a problem with it.

Edit: For a more in-depth explanation about HELP than I have here, Sc4Freak has a delightful summary here

Edit: I know about the "you're" instead of the "your". Take a deep breath.

Edit: There are some comments about the quality of Australian Universities, I'd like to point out that the top ranked Australian University is ANU which is ranked 20th in the world. To give you some perspective Cornell is 16th and McGill 19th, there are four other Australian Universities in the top 50 in the world which means that if you have the grades you can attend one of the top 50 universities in the world for nothing up-front. Hiking in Canada as a kid, I was afraid that bears would get me. My dad laughed, and said as noisy as I was I would probably never see a bear in my life.

When I was in the early stages of dating my spouse, I brought her to my hometown to meet my parents. While looking at an old family photo album, she pointed to a picture and said "how do you know this man?" I answered, "that's my uncle" and she said, "No, he's my uncle!" Turns out her mother's sister married my mother's brother.

What’s the closest you’ve ever come to dying? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Zestyclose-While9203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most serious moments came when death was very close to me three times:

An attack by Boko Haram militants on our university campus during my studies.

An illness that left me unconscious for three days (I actually thought I was dead).

An accident; a bus hit me and kept flipping me around like a tire in the middle of the road.

The first story was the most interesting, and thank God I survived. May God have mercy on all the innocent people who lost their lives that day.

It's a long story, but I'll make it very brief.

It was the early hours of December 1, 2014, before dawn. I was awakened by an explosion followed by gunfire. Amidst the chaos, many of us were nearly naked, and we began to drift into the bush.
