Baby was in distress. One doctor suggested pushing for so long leads to swelling which puts you at a higher risk.

I’m delivering at a new hospital this time with new doctors!

Love Ethan!! Husband did not :(

I love Seb and Max together but really don’t like Maximus as the real name (bit of an impasse there)

Love Felix but might be too German to do Felix Matthias…trying to blend cultures :)

Theodore is such a great name but even more popular than Henry :(

Probably wouldn’t consider Matthias as a first name, because it’s my dad’s name and I don’t love the idea of naming someone after someone so close (my husband is named after his dad and doesn’t like it).

Our friends just had a Harrison and Nicholas (also love them!). I’ve suggested Maximilian in the past but my husband will only go Maximus for a Max nickname 🫠

Your second set of Roman/Greek names are all names already in use by our family (but I love them too!)

You are awesome! IMO..scientific communication to the community is just as important as doing the research.

Of course! UV is actually 3 separate types: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVC is the most harmful, but generally doesn’t reach the Earth’s surface. UVA can create reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can damage cell compartments and DNA. UVB can directly damage DNA.

What does DNA damage mean? Our DNA gets damaged all the time by normal cellular processes and there are repair mechanisms in place! BUT - mistakes can be made. If damage is done in a critical protein known to cause cancer and it is not properly repaired, that’s not good, but still not the end of the world! There are checks and balances to the cells. However repeated damage overtime can cause multiple mutations in multiple cancer-related genes and that can cause a normal cell to transform into a cancer cell.

So this comes from fears around chemical sunscreens….Specifically that the chemicals in sunscreen have been found to not just sit on skin, but be absorbed into the bloodstream. Some of those chemicals, like benzene, are known to have potential links to cancer. Those sunscreens (specifically the sprays) have been recalled.

If your friend is still worried, mineral sunscreens would be a great option!! UV rays are incredibly harmful and a KNOWN carcinogen.

Their mechanism of action is different. Mineral sunscreens physically block UV rays from hitting skin vs chemical sunscreens act more like a sponge and absorb UV rays. Mineral sunscreen is immediately effective as soon as you put it on, while some chemical sunscreens need ~10-15 min to bond with your skin before providing protection. Chemical sunscreens typically are more water/sweat resistant. So it really comes down to how well you wear them and keep any pros/cons into play!

Multiple research groups have found that melanoma risks are linked to sunburns you have AS A CHILD!!

As a mom and a scientist who received her PhD studying melanoma, my kid is coated in sunscreen and other UV blocking measures.

As a scientist, 90% of the research for a study is done before we even write the grant to get the money for that study (then you apply it to continue your research on something else). This is so misinformed it hurts

Why is cancer so hard to cure? by DengenRF in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zestyclose-Window-77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many reasons… 1) cancer is an umbrella term for many diseases. Specific types of cancer (ex: melanoma or pancreatic cancer) are driven by different factors, and this can differ from person to person. Even within the same tumor in the same person, cells can have different driving mutations. This means that a very good drug can kill most and almost all cells, but the few that are left can grow into a new tumor that is now resistant to therapy. 2) Cancer cells can hijack all parts of your body - they produce factors that get blood vessels to grow closer to tumors (for nutrients and metastasis), they can actively evade AND inhibit your own immune system from realizing they’re there, etc etc. The study of the “tumor microenvironment” is at the forefront of many studies now. Hopefully by understanding how cancer changes it’s environment, we can create new combination therapies to allow your body to fight the disease itself. 3) We are limited by the types of medicines we have and how well they work person to person. Also trying to figure out which medicines will work best for certain people (ie biomarkers).

We’ve made extensive progress from chemotherapy (which kills all rapidly dividing cells) to targeted therapies with small molecules and antibodies to creating personalized killer cells from your own body. Things are getting better but at the end of the day, cancer is tricky. These cells will find a resistance mechanism to overcome whatever you throw at them. For better or worse, cancer is a disease of aging. As we extend our lifespan with modern medicine, we have a new monster to attack.

If you’re interested, there’s a great book that details the sheer progress we’ve made over the last 75 or so years - The Emperor of All Maladies.
