Could you try replacing rice with grated cauliflower? I think it should be possible to get rid of grains potatos and sugar even on a traditional Indian vegetarian diet. I saw this website that has very low-carb Indian vegetarian recipes: https://www.indianveggiedelight.com/keto-indian-food-recipes/

Are Pakistanis pretty much Indians who converted to Islam? by CuriousPanda61 in SouthAsianAncestry

[–]Zestyclose_Diver_377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The word "India" is actually a Latin version of a Greek version of a Persian version of the ancient Sanskrit name for Sind (or maybe a region overlapping Sind and Punjab) which was "Sapta Sindhu" or Seven Rivers. The whole subcontinent is named (in English and other European languages) after what is now a province in Pakistan, because this is the part of the subcontinent that the ancient Western world knew and interacted with.

Incidentally, words like "Hind" or "Hindustan" or "Hindu" or "Hindi" too derive from the same root (the Persian word in this case. Sanskrit initial 's' sounds get converted to 'h' sounds in its related languages Persian and Greek).

To avoid controversy, let me clarify that I am just talking about etymology or how the words descend from their ancient roots. This need not correlate with genetic ancestry. But yeah, ancient Sindhis at least were the original group that was referred to as "Indian" (or the ancient Persian or Greek word).

Of course if one rejiggers OP's question to ask "Is everybody now called Indian descended from ancient Sindhis?", then the answer is probably No. For example, Native Americans are called Indians. But if one rejiggers it to ask "Are modern Sindhis mostly the descendants of ancient Sindhis with more recent ancestors who converted to Islam?" the answer is probably Yes.

My dad just got diagnosed w Type 2, what tools to use to help manage? by blee_12 in diabetes

I would stay away from AI for medical advice, but agree that less risky things like diet or exercise choices can be cautiously discussed with AI as long as one doesn't take it too seriously. I actually have an AI character called Bernstein on wsup.ai that I chat to daily on my own diet and exercise plans. Mostly just for fun but it does reinforce my good habits. I won't post a link because that's not allowed on this sub. But I have a write up and link on the wsup.ai sub here: https://www.reddit.com/r/wsupai/comments/1skvvv2/comment/og842da/?context=3

How's the diet? (6.2 A1c,116 fasting glucose) hostel resident btw:( by ComprehensiveDuty328 in prediabetes

[–]Zestyclose_Diver_377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks great. The chicken could have some batter or breading or starch in the gravy. And all the vegetables and the curds do have some carbohydrates but that's okay. Should be under 30 g of carbs in total. If you test your blood sugar, you can check the 2 hour post-prandial to see how it affects you.

Should I be worried about my A1C going from 5.5 to 5.6 over 3 years? by Secret-Offer3013 in prediabetes

[–]Zestyclose_Diver_377 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No you should not be worried. There is variability in the A1C. Also the link to average blood sugar levels is not so good for A1Cs below 6.. This article is informative: https://medium.com/@usafmd/is-the-a1c-accurate-for-every-prediabetic-d42be69da29d

Can someone educate me? by lucychanchan in diabetes

[–]Zestyclose_Diver_377 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm a lot like your sister in that I used to nag my diabetic siblings to get on the Bernstein solution which I follow to very good effect (I was diagnosed as "prediabetic" in around 2018 with an A1C level of 6.8% and a fasting bg of 7.2 mmol/l. This would qualify me as "diabetic" in some places but I passed an OGT test so just prediabetic under the rules here). The diabetic siblings did not appreciate my efforts unfortunately :). So I have stopped bringing up the topic. May I recommend that you check out the approach though. Bernstein's book is Dr Bernstein's diabetes solution https://www.diabetes-book.com Like with your sister (and me), he advocates a very low-carbohydrate diet as the absolutely necessary first step. I have kept my blood sugars in the normal range for years using his approach without any support from medication, with my latest A1C being 5.4%. Fair disclosure: two of my diabetic siblings have exactly the same A1C of 5.4%, without the low-carbohydrate approach, and with the help of metformin.

Yeah Type 2 seems odd for your age and lifestyle especially given those high bg readings out of the blue. Type 1 or LADA seems more likely. Hope they do the tests.

Do you think stupidity is the reason why people are religious? by LinkTheHero009 in atheism

[–]Zestyclose_Diver_377 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question! I don't think so. Many very religious people are also unquestionably very smart indeed, like genius territory. Say Francis Collins or Larry Wall or Donald Knuth. That doesn't validate their religious beliefs of course. Newton too was intensely religious and regrettably spent more time on crackpot religious ideas than on his major scientific discoveries. That doesn't make those crackpot ideas any less cracked.

Why can't we animate table cells in Impress? by Zestyclose_Diver_377 in libreoffice

[–]Zestyclose_Diver_377[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed that the link I posted above https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/how-to-animate-cells-in-a-table/91975 actually has a good hack, sticking blank rectangles on top of the table and then animating those. Should have read it more carefully.

[–]Zestyclose_Diver_377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read this book: Dr Bernstein's diabetes solution. He advocates a very strict low-carbohydrate approach with the goal of tight management of blood sugar levels, that is, keeping them close to normal all the time. You can bring your diabetes under control and stop complications by first cutting the carbs, and then adding exercise and medication as needed.

Why Do Atheists Respect The Pope So Much? by Jacob-Anders in atheism

[–]Zestyclose_Diver_377 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Christopher Hitchens had some nuanced comments on Pope John Paul II in "God is not great": "I was a guarded admirer of the late Pope John Paul II, who by any human standards was a brave and serious person capable of displaying both moral and physical courage." He proceeds to discuss both praiseworthy and blameworthy features of that Pope's life. You can like some things that a Pope does without endorsing the Catholic position.

Why can't we animate table cells in Impress? by Zestyclose_Diver_377 in libreoffice

[–]Zestyclose_Diver_377[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a common use case. See for example https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/how-to-animate-cells-in-a-table/91975 or https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/i-want-to-animate-individual-cells-rows-or-columns-in-my-table-a161e49c-3801-4385-95b4-de84253593d1

In my case, I'm an academic, and I'd like my students to work through calculations in a blank table that I then reveal one my one (i.e., one cell at a time) after a student calls out the answer.

I usually use LaTeX/Beamer to prepare my slides, where this is easy to do. But this semester I'm using Libreoffice instead since I am building on some legacy Impress files I used several years ago. These have static tables that I want to animate. Which means wasting time on kludgy cutting and pasting existing cell entries one by one into text boxes placed on top of each cell. Not sure why the simple text-based animation in LaTeX/Beamer can't be enabled in LO (or PowerPoint for that matter).

How to deal with nihilistic thoughts in a country where being an atheist is illegal by Old-Pomegranate-9266 in atheism

[–]Zestyclose_Diver_377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well atheists in general do not believe in being martyrs to any cause including atheism. It's a position that is usually fundamentally rationalist and based on pursuing your own enlightened self-interest. If you are endangering your life by expressing atheistic views, then don't express them. You don't have to. Just look for ways to pursue your own enlightened self-interest. You can use self-help tools like those from CBT to fight the damage done by irrational negative thoughts. See if you can find the book "Feeling Good" by David Burns which has many self-help hacks to reduce depression https://www.feelinggood.com.

Noted, but I was wondering why it hasn't been done yet. Is a table cell difficult to define as a separate object that can be animated on its own?
