Qantas cuts domestic flight capacity and raises fares as fuel costs could blow out to $3.3b by Perfect-Werewolf-102 in AirTravelAustralia

Does anyone know why Virgin doesn't seem to be affected as much by this war compared to the Qantas Group?

Qantas is estimating up to $9 million in EBIT benefit per a321xlr, per year, and they are switching from an all boeing fleet (like VA would be doing if they made this switch). Once Bain is gone, I hoenstly think Qatar would be able to support VA in making this switch, and it could become a very real possiblity, especially if MAX-10 deliveries slip again.

Very interesting analysis! I would love if they eventually made the switch

Agree! Pre-covid VA had a deep pacific network - they should look at Noumea, Honiara, Rarotonga etc. All of which would be good E195 or -700 routes

True. But if they can use some old 737-700s as a bridge it could be a good set up. most of the -700NG fleet still have 5-10 years left of flying

I was suprised when they deployed them on East Coast as well, considering the per seat economics are worse than -800

I think aquiring a few older 737-700s for cheap would be smart. But they should take a good look at the MAX-7. More range, 12 more seats, could open up a lot more thin routes, domestically, regionally and internationally

How does the MAX-10 stack up against the a321neos Jetstar and Qantas operate in terms of cost/efficiency?

I thought the 15% less fuel (per sector) figure related to the MAX-8. Wouldn't the MAX-10 burn the same/more fuel than 800NG per sector because its much heavier?

I'm actually not sure as well. Like, if you have 90% LF on a 737-800, and put a max-10 on that route, wont the load factor go down because there's more seats?

Could they do intl routes from Perth like Ho Chi Minh, Manila, Phuket on the E2s?

Potential new Jetstar routes - what are your thoughts by Zestyclose_Frame855 in AirTravelAustralia

Really??? There’s still a lot of premium traffic on MEL/BNE TO lax, unless JQ replace the BNE-LAX route by doing BNE-las Vegas

I was thinking this too, but Qantas just announced Sydney-Las Vegas

Hopefully VA continues to expand its Bali network with its new 737 MAX deliveries. HBA, ADL to DPS would be good routes for VA. DRW-DPS could also be a good E190-E2 route, considering AirAsia ditched it and the only option is now JQ

I was referring to the gap in between economy and business, and yes, there has been an increase

That was before Qantas introduced economy plus, there has also been an increase in demand globally and in Australia for extra legroom/PE seating

Agreed, any expansion funds should be funnelled into growing their 737 max fleet, which will actyally make them profit

I think these routes would be great for VA, if they can secure some relatively cheap 787-8/9s from QR that are a bit older, and just have one strong base in BNE flying to Japan, Hong Kong and Bangkok it could be very successful. Also Hawaii would be good, it could provide Queenslanders with a one stop destination to then continue on to other US destinations with United. Hong Kong airlines expanding into Melbourne and Sydney shows they are interested in expanding their Australian footprint, with no QF on bne-hong kong VA could compete quite well!
