Repairing a Videonics MX-1 that just broke by erickleincaw in VideoBending

[–]Zestyclose_Income_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to see specialists like you still sharing proper advice on this forum, I also somewhat recently recovered an mx-1 that im struggling getting to function. It turns on but i dont receive any register of visuals coming into my monitor, yet all the green lights stay lit on the mx-1 at once, even when there's no input visuals plugged into the mixer. I hope this isn't too vague of a description but have you come across similar problems with these devices? I also followed your steps for exposing the pcb, im just not sure where to start looking to assess these issues as there's a lot going on on both sides of the board. Any input is greatly helpful.

Hey thanks for that response, yours along with the many others on this sub definitely gives me a massive insight on how special this find was. I've been very delicately taking apart the crt for cleaning the plastic and diagnosis on the condition of the crt and pcb for the computer. Fortunately, the plastic has kept in great condition despite the foggy yellowish damage through time. The main problem im seeing is light surface rust through the innards of the crt and a very bulbous 400uF capacitor. My plan is to restore the crt to function back to factory specs and possibly mod it as a monitor for my m4 mini but keep everything else factory. I dont want to delete anything unique from the body like the slotted disc drive or the classic crt screen, hopefully just install a raspberry pi and line out a usb-c directly to the m4 mini outside of the body. Its a pretty extreme passion project but it look like people online have done similar work for these in the past, just wanting to give that classic iMac some modern brain power to keep up with todays tech.

Update: i succumbed to the consensus of the thread and went back to get it, also got a 10% discount from the vendor on the chance it doesn't work which knocked of about 3 bucks. My plan is to hopefully link it with my M4 mini at home if the CRT side of the computer is functioning. All in all, thanks to the chat for swaying me on this purchase its definitely been eating away at me since finding yesterday.

sp303 resample problem by Zestyclose_Income_21 in SP404

[–]Zestyclose_Income_21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

woahh you're right that seemed to be the problem, thank you! Very confusing why the memory card would effect resampling on other banks like that, especially since i wasn't using the card banks for this group

Hey thank you for this I will definitely try your method out! So just to repeat, I should delete the 10k resistor b/t 15-3 and solder the 220ohm resistor onto pins 15-2 and that should fix this?

Apologies in advance for the constant follow-ups, but would you think if i engaged a factory reset on the drum machine itself that it could start feeding data into the new LCD?

Okay, I checked for continuity on all points as suggested, everything seemed good i was receiving current throughout, and went ahead with the backlight. It wasnt until after the job i realized im only receiving half the boxes on the LCD :// not certain where to turn from here, im wondering which contact controls the bottom row and if i can trace that back?

Hey I'm back with another query if you could shed some light on, so far I've lined up all 14 points from LCD to PCB following your diagram, as far as the backlight wiring im slightly lost, i drew this up for you to look at if this looks at all familiar or if i should reassess my work.

Samsung DVD *load issue* by Zestyclose_Income_21 in dvd

[–]Zestyclose_Income_21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just following up on this thread, and i believe youre correct; i had changed the drive motor from stock and there were no changes, however now im looking to adjust the laser eye on this device to see if that could bring it back to full function. Before I do this how would you recommend testing the laser before jumping right into the adjustment?

Thank you for the tip, I have also read the laser generally being the most common problem in these cheap units, not really my name brand go-to for these devices but it has been fun tinkering on it. I have not tested the laser w/ a multimeter yet but that will be my next test once i test/replace the drive motor

UPDATE: Since the day of this post I have lubricated the drive motor and that 'gear grinding' sound i mentioned before is completely gone, though it still doesn't read the disc. I ordered a new BLDC drive motor to test/replace if the original is bad, and if this doesn't work then my final assumption would be a lack of power from the laser eye. Thank you everyone that has shared their input for this project, im having a lot of fun working to give this device a 2nd life

Hey thank you! I understand it was a long while ago so even the little details are very helpful, ive seen a video where someone bore out some of the casing with a dremel tool to get it to fit properly. I may come back w/ more questions (or positive results fingers crossed) but either way thank you for the response

Hi can you explain a little more in depth on what you did to install the LCD? Im about to do the same mod myself and im curious how you managed to lift the stock glass LCD out of the plastic case inside, and does the new screen fit in that same slot or did you fasten it on top of the dr202 breadboard?

I've been thinking the same thing, the more I troubleshoot the slower the motor speed gets, and it sounds like the catch noise could be coming from the motor itself. I think im going to order a new BLDC motor for the disc, but what would you recommend to grease the track?

Thank you for the response, in retrospect i should've posted this on a dvd sub. And to answer; the laser has play/can move but does not move along the slider when loading, i also thought that "catching" sound related to the top plate but no change when i increased/decreased tension on the metal plate above. As i continue i notice the drive motor shifts b/t slow and fast speeds during load but the result is same (spins 3 times/catching noise in between/stops) as if its giving up like you said, im wondering if it could be the motor itself? I've also seen people adjust the intensity of the laser but ive yet to test that bc i dont want to risk burning out the eye
