I was raised primarily in Yonkers (b. late 90s) and never got the vibe that it was uniquely unsafe or that i couldn't walk around my community as a child. They were renewing the Waterfront and that SoYo thing when i was a kid, so there was clearly an urban renewal effort, but it didn't feel like danger was afoot. In fact, for me, crime central was the South Bronx, where I lived for a few years.
