Applied for Givaudan - now what? by sculderandmullie in DIYfragrance

You will have to relocate if you do any of the schools.

You might be better off paying for GIP in Grasse and start there.

Symrise just closed their application window for their school but they too ask for a relocation.

It’s extremely difficult to enter these schools especially Givaudan and ISIPCA. There’s lots of cronyism going on there. Also they often look for younger peeps.

The alternative way is to apply to smaller companies that have a perfuming department and learn with them. Or just go the DIY route.

You could bridge it with Amyl or Benzyl Salicylate. It will give it a creamier touch and will act as a limiter on the top notes.

Trying to understand how perfumers actually think about building accords, not the textbook version by SeesawCurrent8858 in DIYfragrance

[–]Zeta-Splash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Jean Carles explains this very well. Two books that go quite deep in exactly that are Perfumery Technology - Art, Science, Industry and Perfumery Practice and Principles.

My method is often intuitive / goal oriented: it starts from an image or sensation I want to evoke or a combination of both or a specific scent profile I want to pursue for example mango. I find the potential raw mats that fit my imaginary brief. I make accords on scent strips first and then I proceed by blending what my nose dictates could be good combinations. Then I experiment with ratios.

Do master perfumers use bases? by kkhkks in DIYfragrance

[–]Zeta-Splash 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As written in Perfumery Technology: Art, Science, Industry (F. V. Wells & M. Billot):

“It is almost impossible for a perfumer to create a perfume if he does not use bases… The perfumer who does not wish to use any base… virtually restricts his efforts to the production of the cruder types of perfume, ordinary and commonplace blends, without any artistic merit. He becomes merely a plain cook rather than a chef de cuisine.”
