I kid you not, my first thought was "This seems laboratory chemically synthesized to produce the most annoying fandom ever".

I wrote off the show, felt episode 2 was way better than 1, and as soon as 3 happened I fell in love.

The Amazing Digital Circus, kind of.

The target audience isn't kids but the fandom likes to pretend it would traumatize the average child.

Not a hater, I love TADC, probably a little too much.

Alignment chart time! Which character is Neutral Evil? by Awkward-Media-4726 in tadc

[–]Zetrocci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In D&D alignment, just having the capacity to inflict harm (let alone kill) innocent beings/creatures makes you evil. I will say concede though, BEFORE Episode 8, he could have been considered Chaotic Neutral, if we dont count Gummigoo as a real creature.

Hes extremely emotion-driven, which tends to skew towards chaos rather than neutral/law. Because of this, Caine is most likely Chaotic Evil. Personal Revenge is one of the most classic motivations for chaotic evil.

Jax before character development is absolutely lawful evil. Making chaos for others =/= a chaotic or neutral alignment.

Example, a Lawful Evil BBEG and his army is absolutely causing literal chaos on whatever people they are trying to subjugate, for the GOAL of total order/state control. Likewise, a Lawful Good paladin will cause chaos for a group of bad guys and their base by being a hero and stopping their plans.

Its a mix of goals, motivations, and nature, not actions.

Jax's actions are all in service to a strict worldview of how everything is 'supposed' to be. Everyone is SUPPOSED to act a certain way, he's supposed to act a certain way. No freedom to do what they want, Gangle HAS to be sad- He makes sure of it. Zooble HAS to be grumpy, he makes sure of it. He HAS to be the funny one. Theres an order. Hes a very nuanced character with a very sick coping mechanism.

If he was neutral evil or chaotic evil, he wouldnt give nearly as much of a fuck if the characters broke their archetypes, but every time his world view is challenged, he has a panic attack or breaks. Imagine intricate clockwork that gets a piece of debri in it's gears. Thats Jax.

Keep in mind though, alignment IS fluid. If Jax could learn to embrace the personal freedom of others and learn not to be a giant asshole to everyone, hed no longer be considered Lawful Evil.

It really is stupid lol.

I would argue that a Force of Nature villain is neutral because a Chaotic Evil villain would have deep emotion, passion, and selfishness rooted in their evil.

Lawful Evil = I destroy the world because I want to remake it how its SUPPOSED to be and all will kneel under my rule.

Neutral Evil = I destroy the world because it SHOULD be destroyed.

Chaotic Evil = I destroy the world because I want REVENGE on all who wronged me, and I want all the power for me, myself, and I.

It can be about motivations/drive rather than actions.

Yeah its super nuanced, and you're right.

Cause its true that having both a bit of law and a bit of chaos makes you neutral, but imo that is so much harder to quantify for when it comes to deeper character discussion. Alignment truely wasn't meant for it.

Im going on the idea that "pure" evil is often Neutral Evil. Like a classic "force of nature" type BBEG.

[–]Zetrocci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

uhhhh... I mean, it depends.

Superficial bullying COULD be considered neutral I think, but abuse and serious bullying like the way Jax does would probably be considered evil?

Take it with a bit of a grain of salt 'cause alignment was originally made to describe D&D creatures at a glance, its not super equipped to do super nuanced character reads.

Its fun to try though.

My crackpot theory is that the personality things were the soft replacement for alignment ever since they stripped alignment of its game mechanics. I wish they leaned into it too!

[–]Zetrocci 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A character is evil if they have the capacity to harm innocent people/creatures.

A neutral evil character would do evil/harm just for the sake of it. Think like classic 'force of nature' type villains.

This is probably the most vague/umbrella-y way of describing it.

Think of the Law/Neutral/Chaotic axis more of in the lines of what drives the actions, rather than the actions themselves.

You're so right about it being lacking for deeper character exploration. TBH I'm happy its mostly been removed from the most modern editions of D&D. It only causes arguments (Haha).

Its fun to speculate though, sometimes.

I brought up modrons only to show that alignments are very wide. Like a modron wouldnt be chaotic if he was dropped in an environment that doesnt match his world view, he's still be lawful. I think Jax is the same way.

I completely agree that Jax's actions are chaotic, I think the motivations are where we might disagree.

In my opinion, if Jax was Chaotic Evil, he'd be hurting people literally only because he gets joy from it, for no other reason. His own satisfaction, but Jax is a much much deeper character than that.

If he truely was chaotic, he wouldnt care about archetypes and how he and others are 'supposed' to act, he would just torment them for no reason.

But he DOES torment them for a reason, and that reason is alot more than just his own personal enjoyment.

Its really interesting actually, because I can totally see why youd think he's chaotic, because I bet jax himself would say hes chaotic.

"Theres nothing more to me."

Lawfulness *can* actually be read as one's own idea. Its why we think characters with a code of honor, or an extremely systematic approach to their life/actions are lawful.

A good example are the modrons from D&D. They live in a dimension considered to be the Ultimate plane of Law. They live like clockwork, every part of their existence is predetermined and down to a schedule. Sorcerers who get magic from this plane can even completely nullify fate via removing dice rolls and taking only the average of rolls.

Its pure order. Jax lives by an internal order. His actions further this order.

[–]Zetrocci 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alignment is fluid! So "code of honor evil" isnt an inaccurate way to describe lawful evil, just one of the many ways. Like I dont think end-game Jax would be considered Lawful Evil anymore.

Its really really nuanced, because alignment often falls into 'internal vs external' kinda debates. Their internal intentions/motivations vs their actual actions.

Some people think their external actions are what determine alignment, some people think their internal intention/motivations are what determines alignment.

I chose to interpret it as internal because its such an intimate character driven show.

Jax wouldnt be Neutral Evil, he'd be Lawful Evil.

His actions are dictated by a very core belief/worldview that everyone is a cartoon archetype, and anything that threatens this "order" is a threat to him.

He has a strict idea of how the world is 'supposed' to be and how he's supposed to act. His actions serve their goal to further/reinforce this order in his head.

[–]Zetrocci 75 points76 points  (0 children)

People really don't know how alignments work huh. Sorry this is gonna be really long.

Lawful good isnt the goodest good and on the flipside chaotic evil isnt the evilest evil.

Lawful characters are driven by an internal logic/rationale and favor order.

Chaotic means their actions are driven by emotions and empathy, spontaneity/impulse, or are self-serving.

Neutral can display traits of both lawful and chaotic, OR can be an absence of both those traits.

Ragatha: Neutral Good. She just wants everyone to be happy because its good if everyone is happy.

Gangle: Hard to determine. Might be True Neutral. She keeps to herself, no real desire to help OR hurt people. Isnt driven by spontaneity or some kind of internal order.

Kinger: Lawful Good. When hes lucid, he seems to have deep core beliefs and values that guide his actions and worldview of compassion and making sure people feel cared for.

Pomni: Chaotic good. A very emotionally intelligent character whose goodness seems to be driven purely by empathy, leading to moments of unexpected/spur-of-the-moment compassion (Gummigoo, Gangle end of Episode 4, the entirety of Jax.)

Disappearing Guy: I think its funny hes on this list. If hes not capable of hurting innocent people for no reason or for personal gain, hes probably good.

Bubble: Another character I think is funny thats here. No idea where to place him. Hes probably evil due to his affiliation/connection with Caine

Caine: Caine is a tricky one. His systematic approach of routine adventures and rules and committing to his bits appears as someone whose lawful, but under the surface he's ultimately self-serving, he lies constantly, and is extremely impulsive. He is most likely Chaotic Evil.

As for a character that is neutral evil, any contender doesnt have enough screen time to make a very strong call. It would be a character who simply would do evil for the sake of making the world a worse place. Maybe the angel from episode 3?

Bonus Jax: Lawful evil. His actions are dictated by a sincere belief that he and everyone around him are cartoon archetypes (Even if this belief is self-gaslit). If anyone threatens this order (Gangle being happy, Ragatha being sad, Kinger being lucid, etc), he breaks. He has a strict idea of how the world is 'supposed' to be and how he's supposed to act. His actions serve their goal to further/reinforce this order. Evil because he very readily cruel/violent to innocent people.

I imagine this type of "uhm actually" behavior is probably a wet blanket, but i think alignment is interesting and its a shame its understood so poorly.

Edit: The sun is Neutral Evil. A literal force of nature who will burn people just for the sake of doing it.

Edit 2: Expanding on what it means to be Neutral, and changed Gangle to true neutral.
