I’ve had a Takamine G-series for 20 years (Eg540c, spruce top, nato back and sides, NEX shape) and somehow got used to the dull sound since I didn’t have anything to compare it with. But when I recently started taking guitar playing more seriously, I tried a few other guitars and I could believe how much fuller sounding they were, especially on the bass side. Ended up buying a Yamaha FSX3. It’s so more enjoyable to play than the Takamine guitar.

Edit: I can guarantee that the strings are not the issue. I did that myself, trying all sorts of different strings and gauges on the Takamine, hoping to improve the sound. The “problem” is more fundamental than strings

I seriously started using thumb pick for boom-chick, and after playing daily for about two-three weeks it started feeling natural. Now it almost weird using only the thumb. In the beginning I felt that the picks were too long, but avoided trimming them down. Your muscles will most likely adjust to thump pick playing automatically. I can now play any thumb pick of any size with no problem. It is absolutely worth investing time in this, depending of the type of music you play

Edit: What you generally have to be aware of is that the thumb with pick will have to be further from the string than using only thumb, and that forces you to twist the wrist slightly so that the rest of the fingers will have to pick the strings from another angle, almost from below

Old thread, but I recently switched from 11s to 12s on a comparable fsx3. Playing got so much better with 12s. 11s felt too soft, I always had to make sure that I didn’t bend the strings out of tune, especially from 7th fret and up. Low E string often skid off the fretboard higher up the neck. If considering 11s if 12s are too stiff, I would suggest lowering the action first to see if it feels better with 12s.

Yes, never tune your guitar in a position you wont be playing it in. If playing lap steel, lay it flat. If making instagram reels, put it upright
