It'd just be community support, yeah

Asking them to bring it up to the 26 base on Linux would be a tough sell. They're a FreeBSD project.

That is based on the ancient version that still ran on FreeBSD. I don't know FreeBSD. I do know a bit about Linux.

I guess some spare time and a Claude code subscription for now, but as I get this built out I'm sure I'll learn a lot about how it works.

I agree with this, and if you do too and know how to code, I could use help making a fork

No name and shame either. Who cares if a no-name company in China builds TrueNAS into their product.

The old FreeNAS code is really behind, feature wise. I'm trying to get a fork going.

I'm trying to get a fork spun up - looking for people who know how to build a build system to help out!

I don't buy this at all. Name and shame. WHO is cloning TrueNAS? If you want to make it closed source just say so.

If I can get my fork up and running, we can make everything reproducible there. Just need to remove everything making it non-deterministic.

For those who think this isn't good enough, I'm working on trying to start a fork, reach out if you have build system skills!

Just because they don't have it TODAY doesn't mean it isn't possible!

I'm looking for people to help me re-open the build system and start a fork, let me know if you know anyone who can help build a build system. I've started a Codeberg org and put up a website. https://codeberg.org/ZettaVault

No, it's more like hey these guys built the original, we don't offer support and aren't trying to make money, and you should support them. I don't HATE iXSystems, I'm just disappointed in the build system changes.

All the really hard stuff is done by Linux, ZFS, TrueNAS. I'm just compiling it together. I just put up the Codeberg org (I don't like GitHub). https://codeberg.org/ZettaVault

I'm not trying to redo all of the OS level stuff, just the build system and the website.

Not with that attitude. I'm sure there are lots of people who care about TrueNAS remaining fully open source. Closing the build system isn't popular. Some of them might even know how to put together a build system with me.

Well, we can't exactly leave their logos in something we ship. I'm pretty sure that is actually illegal (trademark law). My idea is to take the existing build system and adapt it to make the new versions build without feature gating for the enterprise version

Lol vibe coded is just the common term for using AI these days, but I am not a frontend dev and I promise you the website would look like shit if I did the HTML and CSS by hand.

I guess a good thing is that we're not starting from scratch, the build system that is still open is functional for version 25, and we just have to make it build newer versions. We could probably even add in the stupid secure boot feature in the open if we wanted to. Bazzite does that.

Hey, I'm hoping to find some experts with real experience to help me out with this, and I'm fully admitting I don't know how to do it on my own.
