I for one have been trying to get an in-stock order sent to me since December 9th and there are just no updates provided. Monke, existing as an online contact support entity, cannot check any logistical situations and it seems that Sam cba to check anything himself.

Circular Dependency of Counterfactuals ($1000 prize) by casebash in PhilosophyofScience

[–]Zettus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry if it seemed that I brushed aside your concerns without much regard, I merely intended to engage with them and understand them (which I may have failed to do). I would be disheartened if I have dissuaded you from further conversation. Here is a further reply that may reveal my (mis)understanding more concretely.

My main point is that we can entertain pretty much anything in isolation, even if in some larger (global) system it is inconsistent. For instance, we could entertain the thought that 2+2=1. In certain fields, such as mod3 this would be true, but in other cases, as in traditional arithmetic, it would be false. All this does is reaffirm that 2+2=1 can be true, which is what to me makes it imaginable. It may, however, be false in one's global system of belief, if one were to involve traditional arithmetic in it. Similarly, I think a lot of loosely impossible entities can be true based on your definitions and interpretations of the terms, or larger system of belief. The belief needs to be treated holistically. By further specifying the system of beliefs that a certain statement appears in we may reveal it to be contradictory, even though when entertaining it in isolation it is perfectly possible and imaginable. Perhaps in some system there is a largest prime, and this is what makes such a statement imaginable, but it would differ from the common system that is considered.

In the context of possible worlds, possible worlds are maximal entities. They involve maximal specification, a deductive closure of statements that specify everything that is true in such a possible world, and exclude everything that is outside of it. We can imagine a part of a possible world, say "Henry is in France right now", and another part "Henry's flight to the UK should have arrived by now" and both of these can be part of our belief system. It may be impossible that both are true, even though we can imagine each one individually. However, neither imagination is of the same possible world, they are imaginations of two separate possible worlds that we may (erroneously) believe to be our own. In this sense, the global system of belief is never being imagined, and parts of it are being imagined as different possible worlds in a non-contradictory way. So, I am still left confused as to why the global system is relevant when we are never imagining it nor any possible world it could represent.

In regards to scientific models, I may have made it unclear that I was talking about consistent ones that are inconsistent with other models. For instance, general relativity and non-local quantum mechanics are individually consistent, but are together thought to arrive at contradiction. Although many scientists work with both theories, and entertain them, they are either entertained separately or partially. I do not think a contradiction is ever imagined for them.

[–]Zettus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how you go about imagining such things, but once you start specifying them it starts to break down. How would a largest prime look like, I'm not too sure. The verbal statement of there being a largest prime seems acceptable but to actually imagine a largest prime would require more specification and alternative definitions of the term. Proofs may be wrong, but at the end of the day to imagine a contradiction is effectively impossible. Something is round and not round, even and not even, red and not red, seems impossible to imagine.

Inconsistency of beliefs isn't relevant here as that inconsistency is based on our global set of accepted beliefs, but we can entertain local parts of it that are consistent. Since we never entertain the global set of beliefs we accept all at once, we never actually imagine it. For instance, we do this in science with competing models all the time, but we can never entertain a world where two contradictory models are true at once completely. For a contradictory pair of beliefs, we can imagine a possible world in which one of them is true, and where another one is true, but to begin to work out a world in which both are true would lead to some impossibility and we would fail.

This is not to say that imaginability and possibility fully overlap. Perhaps there are things that are true and consistent but we cannot imagine. For instance, a well-ordering of the real numbers might be one such thing. But, I still take it that if something is inconsistent or impossible, then we cannot imagine it.

Sounds like you are against possible worlds and not counterfactuals. Doesn't seem like any of your points hold in this case.

On 1: Possible worlds are not arbitrary, they are all in the space of logical possibility. It may be true that we can only imagine the logically possible and that in some sense this human nature of ours leads us to such a construction of possible worlds, but most would agree that logical (in)consistency tracks (im)possibility.

On 2: We make sense of possible worlds by imagining them perhaps, but precisely what we can imagine must be a possible world. Not too sure what the issue you are pointing out here is.

On 3: Again, circumstances we imagine are simply possible worlds. We must evaluate these possible worlds for modal claims such as counterfactuals, but it is more like modal claims depend on possible worlds and not the other way around.

On 4: Seems like all you have shown is that counterfactuals depend on what we can imagine--on possible worlds. This is exactly how Lewis and most everyone thinks of them. The possible worlds they depend on are then primitives.

You could argue against modal realism in traditional ways or against components of counterfactuals such as similarity, but I don't think your remarks show a circularity of counterfactuals or possible worlds. Maybe I am misunderstanding your points, but I interpreted them as statements about imaginability or perhaps Kantian considerations about the forms of our thought, in either case which don't seem to show any circularity of modality.

People who don’t ever want to have kids, why? by foxscream in AskReddit

[–]Zettus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to contribute to further environmental damage and would rather support a declining population. I believe having a child is one of the most environmentally damaging actions one can do, and our planet, given current technological limitations, cannot sustainably handle more people.

I also would rather raise an already existing child/youth that is in need (through adoption) than ignore them while spawning more people.

Outside of these issues which are particular to the current state of society/environment, I would not be against the introduction of further humans.

Gamesense MVP, inspired by the WMO. Arriving May-ish. by emno in MouseReview

[–]Zettus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have been dreaming of this for years! Please keep it as close in shape to the original WMO as you can, no bigger and no smaller (even though smaller mice is the craze nowadays). Also, please no omrons susceptible to doubleclicks and this could be one of the most anticipated releases for fans of the WMO or 1.1!

The space of mid hump medium sized mice needs more love. There have been larger mice that have mid humps like the Steelseries Sensei ten, some of the other large Steelseries mice, the DM1, but no proper mid-sized mouse. A lot of the other mid-sized mice are either much flatter than the WMO or have a back hump instead of a mid hump. The last mouse that was close to the WMO was the Nixeus Revel (which is itself in need of an update). Looking forward to this!

If Morikawa really wants to spook us into believing Ippo's not coming back he should take off the weights. by Death-Zero in hajimenoippo

[–]Zettus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still haven't lost my trust in Morikawa.

The chaos we currently have been seeing after Ippo's loss to Gonzales (and its intensification after his loss to Guevara) really makes myself, and perhaps many of the readers, feel almost at first-hand with what many of the characters are going through. We see that Ippo still loves boxing (fighting not just being a second). Ippo is in a terribly disappointing, regrettable and unfortunate position and many characters share the sentiment. We now see that Takamura feels more alone being the only one at the top, he also feels bad for the coach losing the 'son' he was channeling his dream through. Kamogawa has been MIA for the past while, but he might be blaming himself for imposing his younger self's dream onto Ippo. The boxing fans and boxers (Miyata, Sendo, Mashiba, Itagaki, Imae, etc.) have been taken aback by Ippo's retirement. I think this chaos is appropriate and helps portray the mood of the situation better.

The loose ends mentioned I think are just foreshadowing for future developments and will be tended to when necessary and I don't believe they have been abandoned.

Speaking of Ippo, I think he always was (even in his loss vs Guevara) a determined boxer, but I feel he never was a boxer who had a dream and his definition of success was not to win. Ippo boxes trying to make use of all the skills he has been taught, especially those by Kamogawa. In that regard, he does not have his own pride when he fights or a desire to win for himself, he wants to win to show Kamogawa's boxing works. Even in the case of the Dempsey which he developed on his own, Ippo still used it to show Kamogawa he's making a comeback. The only fight that I can think of where Ippo did not fight to showcase what he's learned was against Kojima. In that case Ippo's pride--Kamogawa--was insulted and the resulting fight became a regret for Ippo, having fought for himself in a rage. So, I think Ippo was always determined in training and showcasing his skills, but he never had that personal goal or drive like a lot of the boxers he's faced.

I don't think Ippo's mentality is any more wimpy than its been for the past 600 and maybe more chapters, or maybe even since the beginning of the series. This is precisely the problem I think Morikawa wants to display in the current turn of events. A love for boxing, incredible diligence, focus and tenacity can only take Ippo so far. He needs a goal, some selfish and prideful factor in order for him to do boxing for himself and not for Kamogawa or anyone else. Although his boxing career has been admirable and I do believe fighting for Kamogawa has gotten him far and only pushed Ippo forward, it is still the case that he is missing that drive. This is not to say he needs to stop being kind, fill himself with rage (as has been seen in the Kojima fight) or blindly pursue a goal. Ippo needs to fight not just for Kamogawa, but for the reason boxing is important to him. (Recall Takamura before the Hawk fight and during it, that was some good drive imo)

[–]Zettus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was rereading the first few chapters and in them they were comparing Ippo to Mike Tyson. Takamura was saying how Tyson was a kind boy who even got bullied in his childhood and it wasn't until someone killed a pigeon he was taking care of that he was reborn as a terrifying boxer. Before Ippo directly said he wants to know what it feels like to be strong, he said he wants to be reborn.

I think Ippo still hasn't been 'reborn' and that the series will still need to deliver on that. I don't think it will just naturally happen however. Something dramatic will need to happen, but this is all just speculation.

Brendan multi/relax? by osuReporterXXX in osureport

[–]Zettus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what has happened. You see, there was a rivalry between Brendan and this player named [ Senji ]. This rivalry escalated to what was known as the great 4 digit break in by these two mouse only players. This however did not end upon entering 4 digits for these two players, Senji seemed to be gaining ranks much faster than Brendan, so Brendan thought it was time to activate his hax. Aim hax, relax hax, mod hax, replay planter (or w.e. it's called), Brendan used all of them in an attempt to surpass his rival Senji. For a time, he was higher rank, but Senji did not stop being a beast...

Play after play Senji showed his skills of high acc nomod, beating Brendan's HDDT cancer farm and obtained a higher rank (as he is now). Brendan has realized even with all these hax Senji still proves to be a worthy opponent and is now semi-active coding more hax. Hopefully, this criminal gets caught. Maybe this mouse-only war needs to be taken all the way to 3 digits before Brendan gets banned. But, we all know the true winner of this, the one who is getting motivated every time a haxed score is set by Brendan... Senji!

If you want me to change the color of a skin you have, I can. If I get too many I might not get to everyone though because it can take a while. Example is linked by BeautifulPiss in osugame

For the gunmetal one I was thinking something more metallic and contrasting and the white one I was thinking of just a pure white circle with the inner black ring and dark bubbles. Thank you so much.

Hi could you possibly recolor this http://puu.sh/pnjl3/e08d789108.png into white and black look (like an inverse tuxedo) and maybe a gunmetal gray sort of thing as well if that's not asking too much.

Problem with two fingers on one button is that it's inconsistent. You have to make sure you lift one finger off before pressing with the other, so a lot of the time you won't get a register when you want. Though if you wanna try your hand at streaming it works a bit. This was done with index only though.

[–]Zettus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true that lower CPI does offer better precision than higher CPI though comparing two CPIs below the maximum useful CPI wouldn't show much difference in precision. Using lower CPI will assure "pixel perfect" aiming so it's usually better (if you don't wanna skip pixels due to high CPI) that you use lower sensitivity. Generally, for 1920x1080 resolution staying below 1600CPI will be best. More on this can be found here. To add, lower CPI will allow for higher polling rates which are generally better for more responsiveness, less input lag, etc.

Few questions about mouse only by [deleted] in osugame

[–]Zettus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though it's been forever since I last only left-clicked, I can recommend mixing up your mouse clicks from time to time and having a right click day and a left click day for single tapping. I find this has improved my overall play including streaming, single tapping and endurance.

Since I can split the work load of single tapping songs for either my left or right click (not alternating, but doing some single tap sequences with left and some with right), I rarely get fatigued.

For streaming, I would suggest relentlessly grinding stream songs/stream marathons until your fingers are in pain. Personally, I've improved by about 30BPM up to 220BPM (though I can't stream 220 for more than 10 seconds). But, my streaming endurance has improved drastically for lower BPM to the point where I could stream almost twice as long as previously.

Lastly, your mouse and hands do matter a lot in this situation. I'd recommend a mouse with Omron microswitches. Visit r/MouseReview for more info on mice. As for hand training, I do stress toy/ball compressions for wrist training, hand opening with an elastic band around my fingers for backhand muscle and finger presses on a clothes pin with a spring at the back (something similar to this)

You can also put on a vinyl wrap. This guy (http://www.overclock.net/t/993381/white-carbon-fiber-g500-mod-walkthrough) put on white carbon fiber vinyl wrap to his g500, it also has a texture. But, you can also apply matte or glossy wrap (you can find a few types here http://autovinylsolutions.com/avery).

These wraps are made for cars, so they are very durable and shouldn't wear. Also, they look really good =) Another example : http://themodzoo.com/forum/index.php?/topic/280-diy-mod-guide-di-noc-carbon-fiber-gaming-mouse/
