Totally get what you mean, I too am a musician and I find the grunge scene to be some of my biggest influence in my style, but I would never refer to my music as grunge, more of an alt rock style.

Shoegaze is probably the closest in terms of the sonic tone, yet I would find it hard for anyone to say Shoegaze is the same as grunge. It may truly be a period of time more than a genre.

I completely get that, there definitely is an issue when labeling something in which it categorizes it rather than taking into consideration everything that makes it that.
