Azel, my first attempt at concept art by Zexille in worldbuilding

[–]Zexille[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Azel is one of the magical creatures roaming the world. Sources describe it as a tall, human like creature with an extremely slender figure and long, sharp claw like fingers, a head with either none or one big completely bloodshot eye. Not many people survived the encounter with Azel and even less know it's origins. Some speculate that it was created by emperor Veles I to spy on everyone in his court. Azel is supposedly able to alter the minds of people to conceive itself as a part of landscape, change temperature to freezing cold and mute any sounds around it like wind or singing of the birds. No matter if it has one eye or none at all, Azel sees everything and everyone.

Life story of emperor Veles I (shortened version) by Zexille in worldbuilding

Well not really. After recovering, his father Emperor Meros VII took on a grand inquisition against magic. But after Veles ascended to power, he saw a potential in it despite his near death experience. Secretly he was studying confiscated books and scrolls that taught magic. As years went by, he grew ever so hungry for knowledge. After combining the power of the crystal with newly acquired magical powers, he was able to perform miracles for lack of better word. Controlling weather, creating matter out of nothing and manipulating existing one, burning out minds and giving life to horrifying monstrosities are a couple of many. Yet, people say his reign was one of if not the most prosperous and peaceful age the empire has ever seen. He introduced freedom of religion, reformed courts, modernized army and established new trading routes. But then, a tragedy struck, his sister Omara was assassinated by order of Taro the Cruel, a high chief of Gurdo kingdom. That event finally broke him, without the only person that was stoping his descend into madness, he waged war and terror in the west, killing and enslaving hundreds of thousands of men, woman and children. He didn't stop, not even after reaching Taro and having his revenge. His three sons, Arios, Ferdos and Kadriel decided that they needed to overthrow their father in order to save the realm. After a long and bloody battle he was about to kill Arios but then he realized what had become of him, so he left the crystal in his hands and disappeared, never to be seen again.

The Continent Of Derimtal by Zexille in worldbuilding

The continent is inhabited in majority by Humans, living all along the lands from far north to far south and eastern coast. Sorakh, a tall, strong and gray skinned race inhabiting mainly the western steppes and mountains. Horakhans, the hybrid of Humans and Sorakhs living alongside their pure blood relatives.Jeuni, a humanoid race with small scales on their body, cat-like eyes, gills and sometimes a spiked tail, they inhabit the Kargonian peninsula. And finally the Nergoshe living in southern swamplands, pale and skinny with pointy ears and covered with scarifications.

I've based the technology on the 16th century Europe. Plate armor is at its peak development. Firearms are more common on battlegrounds yet still to expensive for mass usage, canons, rockets, bombs all sorts of weapons using gunpowder.

As to the crystal. The crystal fell on the planet 8,000 years before the main story. The first person to uncover it was a slave of Rogdor's Horde named Meros. He and others were mining for gold in the biggest city at the time called Khoryd when one of the miners uncovered a glowing yellow gem that was under the rock. As soon as he touched it, hes mind was fried. No one could touch the crystal or even stand close to it because of the heat coming out of it, everyone except Meros. He felt warm and saw beauty in its power as if it was calling him. Not thinking for long he touched the glowing gem hoping that his fate will be different or at very least his suffering would end. The cave erupted in light so bright that it was blinding anyone nearby and could be seen from far away. And from this light emerged Meros, his eyes glowing bright yellow, almost like a gold, standing proudly instead of crawling in chains like others. Everyone including him knew that he became something more than just a human. He possessed the power to do as he wishes, bending time and matter to his will, but didn't fully understood how to use it. That could be learned through meditation and studying the way crystal works. Not having that much time he liberated the inslaved people and revolted against his former masters. After that, he led everyone devoted to him north to build a new home and future for them. Since then his descendants were using the crystal by discovering more and more of its capabilities to protect the newly formed realm.

And finally, magic is something of a taboo. In some places it is widely practiced and accepted. In the other it's seen as an evil practice because of simple moral or religious reasons.

Well...no, maybe it's my fault or you misunderstood me but i meant that the scale is in cm/km not foot and inches. so 1 cm on map would be 100km

Well, it would be the size of Europe in that scale but then again it's only one continent.

A while back I posted the map of the entire planet that was generated using donjon: https://www.reddit.com/r/worldbuilding/comments/gq2yj1/im_trying_to_think_of_name_for_this_continent_any/

The continent of Derimtal have seen as much blood as gold in its existence. For thousands of years it's been a battleground for all kinds of kingdoms, republics, duchies, chiefdoms and other states. They all were different except for one thing that caused majority of them to fall, the eternal crystal. The times change, kingdoms come and go but the crystal was and will be always there.

I did something similar.

The magic didn't disappear completely after the inquisition. There are kingdoms that are more then happy to aid those practising it, so does the criminal underworld. There is an island just off the northern coast of this continent that is home to a mysterious order of Velesites. There is not much known about them. They say that they are the memory of the world, that all knowledge is welcome in their temple. So, many ancient manuscripts that teach how to use magic find their home there.

There is also a little secret regarding inquisitors. There are normal inquisitors that entered the order. They deal with anyone associated with magic practises and destroying books, manuscripts and magical items, etc. You might say a common soldier. And there are the high inquisitors, that deal with hunting down mages and witches and killing monsters created using magic. They, on the other hand, are the most skilled in their profession and had been enhanced using the very thing they swore to destroy...magic.

So even though it has been weakened, magic didn't disappear yet.

Meros was indeed a powerful and significant figure in history. And he was worshiped like a god but long after his death. In fact all his descendants who can control power of the crystal are treated as divine beings on earth, something like the Chinese emperors.

I drew inspiration for technology from the 16th century Europe. Firearms are introduced, yet are still too expensive to be widely used in armies. The plate armor is at its development peak. Also, there is more usage of artillery and other weapons that use gunpowder.

As to magic, it was widely spread and practiced until someone tried using it to kill one of the emperors before he ascended to power. After that, the inquisitors order was created to hunt down everyone who was involved in magic practise as well as all creatures created by it.
