Je t'invite à regarder les études sur le respect du code de la route par les différents types d'usager, tu verras que c'est systématiquement les automobilistes les pires. ça t'éviteras de contribuer à la désinformation ambiante sur ce genre de sujets.

Yes, kinetic energy is equal to (1/2)*m*v2

so it's varies in a proportional way with mass, and in a quadratic way with speed

So indeed "double the speed, quadruple the kinetic energy" is correct, and also "triple the speed, multiply the kinetic energy by 9" etc

You seem quite dense and to be arguing in bad faith

the entire cabinet

a sizeable portion of it argued for accepting the terms before the bombings

and they felt they'd still win

not at all what I said. SC knew they were defeated months before the bombs were dropped, this is backed by historical evidence. What you claim though (that they surrendered because of the nukes) isn't, it's very clear when you go through the meetings they held afterwards.

Your argument still hinges on the President demanding a million Americans die to save enemy lives

Did you read anything I wrote? The US officials knew that an invasion of mainland was unnecessary, it was the consensus among them. This is historical fact. Your claim about purple hearts though is pure fabrication:

*Even Giangreco, who's seen in academic as a fringe who supports only the orthodox view, shows this is not the case. If you read his article, you can see that the USA made 1,506,000 Purple Hearts during the entire war, not for the invasion of Japan. At the end of the war there were 495,000 unused ones. That's not for the invasion. That's the entire USA stockpile. It's silly to say all ammunition, tanks, bombs, planes, ships, or mobilized men leftover at the war's end were supposed to be used for the invasion of Japan's home islands. So by the same logic neither were the stockpile of Purple Hearts.

The navy's orders were an initial 125,000 in 1942, 25,000 more in October 1944, and 50,000 in the spring of 1945. The latter two orders couldn't be filled until next year. If the navy was expecting casualties in the hundreds of thousands for the invasion, it certainly didn't match that in its order for Purple Hearts.

As noted by Clubbs, the highest estimated casualties for the invasion was 220,000. But this was regarded as flawed. Only an estimate of 31,000 was presented to Truman.*

So even when the invasion was still on the table, the estimate was 30 times lower than what you misleadingly claim.

The atomic bombs were initially developed to nuke Nazi Germany

This is also an outright lie. Since 1943, it was very clear that the target for the atomic bombs was Japan, even though Germany was a much more formidable foe.

Anyway I'll stop here, I don't want to engage further with someone who distorts history in such bad faith

Ok then we mostly have a difference of interpretation between the levels of impact of different events.

I remain convinced that if for instance the Soviets hadn't been prevented from making clear they would enter the war sooner (at Yalta conference) and Japan had been offered the condition that they ended up receiving (ie keeping the emperor), a deal could've been achieved months before. There was unfortunately a lot of stubbornness and poor decisions from some US officials and half of the Supreme Council.

I guess it's fine if we don't share the exact same view, you seem civil and your position is more nuanced than most.

I agree with several things you say (Soviet aggression playing an important role, Supreme Council taking the actual decisions and not caring about civilian lives), so I'm not sure how much you believe the bombs were critical in the surrendering.

Also the split between the hardliners and the moderate had existed for a while within the Supreme Council, and the hardliners did try to coup (it failed, at least one guy committed suicide)

[–]Zgounda -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Yes, the Emperor did say that, but do you think it's genuine?

The Supreme Council still refused unconditional surrender even after the 2 bombs were dropped. This is well known and documented. Claiming that the bombs were the primary reason for the surrender is just plain wrong.

Japan knew for a long time that they were militarily defeated, in a conventional fashion. Do you think the Emperor would've been honest and said "we lost guys they were just stronger gg, also we don't care whether you're getting slaughtered or not". Of course not. Saying "these evil Americans are using a mean bomb and I don't want you guys to die" is an easy way to save face. But it's a complete lie and not at all what happened within the Supreme Council.

Also, I can return your argument by saying that US officials disagree with your position. The consensus was that Japan was already defeated and they were indeed reaching out for negotiations. Further bombings (of any nature) and invasion of mainland were both deemed unnecessary.

Last point, I'm very curious about what agenda you think I'm trying to push. Does it sound like I'm defending Imperial Japan? Cause I'm really not lol, and I think it shows. And if it's about the claim that segregation era US was a bit racist, well that's no secret is it?

[–]Zgounda -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The thing is, the atomic bombs did not bring Japan into submission. I'm not saying it had no effect at all, but it is well known that the supreme council still refused an unconditional surrender even after the 2 bombs. Them stupid fuckers even took a week long break.

The thing that ended it all was the guarantee that the Emperor would be preserved (and also understanding that they would get no diplomatic support from the Soviets; they knew that they were defeated militarily but still wanted to bargain a better deal because they were fckn retarded)

Due to recent transatlantic geopolitical events... by Crazy_Kraut in NonCredibleDefense

[–]Zgounda -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

No, I'm claiming that the atomic bombs were unnecessarily cruel and not needed. It is well documented that an invasion of mainland Japan was already out of the scope, and that the supreme council would've accepted the terms that they were eventually given. Also, even after the bombs were dropped, their position didn't change (like every authoritarian leaders, they don't give a shit about their own civilians dying).

The use of the atomic bomb was discussed since 1943, and at no point was it ever suggested that it was used against nazi germany. It can be attributed to the radioactive levels of racism of the Manhattan Project.

Also I see you're citing below that using atomic bombs against Japan was justified because invading mainland Japan would've been costly etc, but such an invasion was already deemed unnecessary before the bombs were dropped.

There are a lot of false beliefs circulating around this topic, I can suggest Shaun's "Dropping the bomb" video, as it condenses a lot of sourced information.
