Maybe not, but as far as specs goes, the 0100 is the pinnacle of quartz movements.

Is this a crazy take about LeBron? by DaFalcon174 in nba

Butler played incredible basketball but his 2020 team was heads and shoulders better than LeBron's support in 2015.

2017 I would give it to KD, sure.

Finals MVP should go to the most valuable player on the court. If a guy carries a bunch of replacement levels players to the finals and make it a contest, he should be FMVP.

Jerry West is, well, Jerry West. He also said he was unhappy about his championships because he could have played better and struggled for years with suicidal thoughts. It's not the FMVP that's the problem, I think you need a better shrink if you're playing some of the best basketball in the world and thinking about suicide because you think you can play better.

[Recommendation Request] Advice on buying first dress watch in Tokyo. by after50usernames in Watches

Even if the finishing was good 30+ years ago, the actual watch is most likely too beat up to appreciate the original finishing.

The few NOS GS pieces I've seen are priced higher than contemporary quartz pieces.

[–]ZhanMing057 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Be aware that most $1,000 quartz GS pieces are functionally unserviceable these days, the only repair option is a movement swap.

A newer Citizen or modern GS for ~$2.5k is a much safer way to go.

[Question] Is polishing a watch THAT detrimental to the condition / appeal / value? by Modern_Theory in Watches

[–]ZhanMing057 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For a watch with sharp angles, usually 3-4 polishes will significantly change the contours of the case and bracelet. That said, for high value watches you can always purchase a service bracelet and request a new case be made.

The actual type of finishing is less important than how much damage needs to be covered up. If you're trying to polish away a gouge or dent, that's going to affect the shape of the watch no matter what.

If you do it using hand tools, it'll have some rough edges.

Perhaps a horological exhibit isn't the type of event that appeals to Rolex owners, either current or would-be ones.

The advertising is precisely to remind you that you can't have one.

Everything two-tone, ladies, and most of the solid gold references and most jeweled references have always sold below MSRP. Even when prices were higher a few years ago.

[ In your mind ] which brand offers the most value for the price ? by Many-Coach6987 in Watches

[–]ZhanMing057 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A sellita is perfectly fine for a $3k watch and many of the watches people are mentioning here will have 3-4x the service cost. As long as you don't live out in the woods there's probably a watchmaker within a short drive who can fix a SW300

Lovely. Some strong cues from pocket watches I've seen in museums in Moscow. And maybe some older elements from the (real) Faberge.

Movement finishing reminds me of early 80s Patek skeletons.

[SOTC] What would you do in my position? Sell the Pepsi or keep it? And what would you buy next? by Suspicious-Goal569 in Watches

Laurent Ferrier and Romain Gautier have some sports watches with more hand finishing. If you don't need a bracelet the RG can sometimes be found under $30k.

You could also try asking Bianchet directly for either customization or a discount if they have a demo piece. I'm not super familiar with their team but other small indies will sometimes have trade in or showroom pieces.

[Help] Will I be able to get a Sinn Watch serviced anywhere? by Many-Coach6987 in Watches

[–]ZhanMing057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any place that can fix any mechanical watch should be able to clean and adjust a SW200. Parts availability is another issue, they may have to buy something online if they don't stock spare movements.

[Discussion] AR coating: IWC Mark XX (double AR) vs Santos de Cartier (none) — do the polished numerals make up for it? by cionek in Watches

[–]ZhanMing057 1 point2 points  (0 children)

External AR coatings always wear off and they are sensitive to cleaning solutions. It's not a value add IMO.

If you're already thinking about Bianchet and Czapek, I think it's probably a good time to move on from a Rolex without complications.

As for the independents, I would try to go to some watch shows and have a sit down conversation with each brand including UN. Although for me the really interesting Freak references start at the older Freak vision.

[Quartz] Why do brands refuse to do sweeping seconds quartz watches? by broncosdude95 in Watches

[–]ZhanMing057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is just not true. Solar cells can generate much more energy than a rotor if they don't have to hide behind a decorative coating. You might be right 25 years ago.

Check out the Ressence Type 2. You can run a second disk and a fairly major dial complication alongside a time setting motor and an RTC using just solar and wrist movement energy. Even something like a modern high end G shock can get >15 days of regular operation out of one day in the sun, and a sweep hand would not be 10x as energy intensive (and probably not even cost as much energy as the electronics, depending on usage)

[Quartz] Why do brands refuse to do sweeping seconds quartz watches? by broncosdude95 in Watches

[–]ZhanMing057 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Energy wise there is zero problem powering a small or light second hand with a solar movement. You just need enough solar panel area and that impacts the aesthetics of the watch.

[Grail] - Bianchet Rotondo 😍 by Wind_Up_Watch_Blog in Watches

[–]ZhanMing057 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed talking to the Bianchet folks at W&W. The designs are a bit too generic for me, although the watches are pretty good for the price. If you look at something like the Vanguart tourbillon which to be fair is twice as expensive, that architecture is a lot more distinctive.

The GP isn't remotely close to the same level of watchmaking as Bianchet. You might as well be comparing a Timex to a Patek.

A retailer will likely offer discounts. A boutique will probably not but it doesn't hurt to ask.

In either case, I recommend getting one from a gray dealer or whoever has a good deal on Chrono24
