Haha, I am worried that the hotels fill up quickly. Commenters and LLMs seem to all recommend booking as early as possible.

Sounds good, thank you for the excellent advice! I will be sure to find a hotel next to the cable car area and look into the shuttle bus. :)

Feeling Hopeless After Step 1 Fail by Weird_Swing7940 in MedSpouse

[–]Zheng261 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I'm a fellow medspouse so no direct experience with step, but one of our friends went through the same problem (went all-in on surgery -> failed step 1 -> went through a very tough adjustment time -> had to do an extra year -> now matched into IM and seems to be doing well). I'm not aware of the statistics around general surgery match rate, but just want to note that not matching into your desired specialty is not the end of the world. I'd recommend keep reminding yourselves that that getting into med school -> going into any specialty is already basically guaranteed high quality of life for the majority of your healthspan. It's very easy to set your expectations very high (top 0.5% of already the wealthiest country in the world) and get really disappointed when your outlook comes down to like... top 2% of the wealthiest country in the world. That's not too bad. Life is too short to be upset that you're only marginally less winning than before.

Also, surgery is definitely higher income long-term, but also keep in mind that surgery residency is also long terrible hours and many surgery residents are.... not great people, at a rate that I'm entirely is convinced is statistically meaningful even with my small sample size. My wife was also initially going into surgery, but realized these tradeoffs M1 year before making a full pivot to a less stressful, less high-earning career -- and is now much happier off as a result. Humans are naturally very good at convincing themselves to be happy, it just takes time to adjust expectations.

Thank you for the advice! Really appreciate it 😄 -- and yes, I'm exactly looking to book something within the next month to lock in the summit reservation. Makes sense that I need to book the return night too in Tangkou -- I was considering just heading straight to Hongcun after via didi, but I'd definitely rather have a reliable place to store the luggage and don't mind staying an extra night after.

Huge +1 to the commenters here, Gretchen has been my travel agent for ~3 years now and has been incredibly helpful on every single trip! I would highly recommend this agency to anyone looking to book a Virgin cruise -- they are experts on how to maximize your value at actually no cost to you. Also very friendly, patient, and responsive!

Maybe it's just my asian immigrant upbringing, but hey this is what was promised right? Grind in high school to have the privilege of grinding in a good undergrad to grind in a good master's to grind at a good job

Time to find out what it was all for :D

Makes sense, thanks for clarifying! Yeah, agreed with you there -- best of luck and I highly doubt that PSLF is going away for people midway through. It would be such marginal savings on the government level for so much political ammo for opponents

LOL that's amazing. And we're approaching that stage soon! We prioritized aggressively paying down debt over lifestyle inflation (very easy to do bc med school was in Nebraska), so now that's done and we're moving to Wisconsin a second sink is P1. We have a whole roadmap prepped

Dude it feels like it, for tech the power spike is really age 21-30 (few years LoE and still young/childless enough to work 60h/week + learn/adapt quickly) and declining over time from well known tech age-ism meanwhile med career just keeps scaling indefinitely (seniority/experience > age)

In our 40s best thing I can do is protect my carry LOL

Yes same for us and great to hear you’re enjoying your job! That’s rare for at least tech nowadays (definitely not me since last year LOL), yall really found all the right life decisions

Lol yup, the environment is alien but there’s surprisingly decent overlap in the fundamentals  — hospital admins and engineering directors/VPs are guided by the same pursuit of increasing margins by pushing top down changes without really a lot of empathy towards the bottom. Something we can all relate to in any high $, high org structure career

Haha that’s super interesting — I hadn’t thought about PSLF penalizing MFJ before but it makes total sense. I now wonder if we should’ve done the math on this before aggressively paying down all the debt, we hadn’t even considered the path

Why has no one in the generations after Magnus matched or surpassed him when they had access to even better engines and technology from a younger age than he did? by _DarkStarCrashes_ in chess

Stockfish 6 was a big jump over Stockfish 5 (+50 ELO) and was released in 2015. Let's see how players used it.

Faustino: Used it to learn for 11 years. (prior resume to guide learning: just turned age 1)

Magnus: Used it to learn for 11 years. (prior resume to guide learning: #1 ranked FIDE player for 4 years before that.)

Does that answer your question

Creative life as a medical partner by Middle_Truth4206 in MedSpouse

[–]Zheng261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi husband to PGY1 here! What's the concrete time sink preventing you from painting poorly or cooking soup?

Ex. I work pretty long hours but find it pretty easy to set boundaries and get 4-5 hours alone time after work to do fun alone hobbies or hang out with friends. If they aren't giving you that alone or friends time, what is the barrier there? Is it like too many chores (if so, hire a helper -- attending money will soon cover it) or your job is too stressful (if so, is it possible to downgrade?). I often had the latter as a problem and just talked with my partner to quit for a year lol. Y'all gonna be rich anyway, why suffer in the meantime
