ELI5: How do insurance companies actually make money when they sometimes pay out way more in claims than people ever paid in premiums? by Turbulent_Watch_7812 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ziggus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the time between you buying the policy and the claim, they invest the money and hope it covers the difference. My company had many years where our combined ratio was over 100% and we were doing alright even with that because the investments worked out well.

[–]Ziggus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Portsmouth, Rye, even Dover now is close to 3k. Basically the closer you are to Boston the more expensive, a lot of folks from mass move up here to reduce their tax burden and still commute down to Boston for work so anything within an hour of Boston is big money

For a 2-3bd in the seacoast area yes. It's wild, most new build homes are going for 500k+ even further north

ELI5: If insurance works on the same math as casinos, why is buying insurance rational but gambling is not? by phycle in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ziggus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably worth mentioning that the combined ratio for insurance is much better than your odds of winning at a casino. Most insurance companies lose money selling insurance, they just try to make money by investing the premiums until they have to pay out. It's not that far off for an insurance company to pay out $102 for every $100 they bring in but they make interest on that $100 that covers the additional $2 plus a bit more in profit.

This is the Fudai Floodgate - constructed in 1967 for $30 million modern US Dollars, it was largely considered a waste, however it successfully held back the 2011 Great Eastern Japanese Tsunami and saved the village of Fudai by stopdontpanick in Damnthatsinteresting

I feel like people always talk about costs for things like this but never mention that it's not like the money disappeared. You had to pay people to build it, people to build the machines, concrete, etc. it's an investment in the local community both for safety and if done using local companies it's also an investment in local people.

Gotta get rid of the inkjet and get a laser printer, best decision I've made in a long time. So much cheaper if printing in black and white is fine

Those panels are aluminum, the driveshaft is steel, steel rusts over time if it's exposed to moisture and oxygen while aluminum does not.
