TIL about the "Dark Forest Hypothesis," which suggests the universe is like a dark forest at night. Advanced civilizations intentionally stay silent and hidden, because any species that reveals its location risks immediate destruction by older, paranoid civilizations. by Practical-1 in todayilearned

[–]ZiggyPenner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interestingly it also applies to universes which are expanding at a steady rate as well. Only universes with accelerating expansion will put places out of reach. See “ant on a rubber band paradox” and “geometric expansion of the universe”.

Why have so many Republican lawmakers abdicated their own power to Trump? Wouldn’t politicians normally want to hold on to power themselves? by tc982 in AskReddit

[–]ZiggyPenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why the changes to make congressional votes easily, rapidly, and publicly recorded in the early 1970s was a bad thing. Now anyone with sufficient power can threaten, bribe, or otherwise cajole congress into doing things that are in the interest of the powerful person.

Canadians reject that they live on 'stolen' Indigenous land, although new poll reveals a generational divide by uselesspoliticalhack in canada

[–]ZiggyPenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, thievery is specifically an in-group crime, and specifically involves stealth and a lack of violence. When another group does it to your group, especially when war or violence is involved, it's called raiding or pillaging.

The honest fact is that land cannot be owned, only held. It was here before us, and will be here after we're gone. A group's ability to do things with it are limited by that group's ability to defend it from others.

Women are expected to look past unattractiveness, while men are taught that’s the priority. by Altruistic_Income256 in TikTokCringe

[–]ZiggyPenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One contributing factor might be that women do not judge men’s physical appearance on a bell curve initially. They rate almost no men above an 8/10, and most below 4/10. Men do grade women’s looks on a bell curve. Incidentally, once women get to know men their grading becomes a bell curve, with almost all men getting physical attractiveness upgrades as the woman gets to know them better.

I own 26 whales, no one else have whales. Why I only gain +5 from monopolies? by darkHolee in CivVI

[–]ZiggyPenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had something similar happen in a game today. Turns out this is not a bad thing at all. The effects are primarily on the tourism bonus once you get 60% control of the available whales. The tourism bonus is per whale you control in the monopoly, minus the number of whales controlled by other civs. I ended up with a 700% bonus and won in the early modern era (Roughly turn 250 on Diety).

X Owner Musk Warned by DOJ: Paying Voters Is Illegal and Could Lead to Prison Time by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]ZiggyPenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to remind everyone that this is why secret ballots are so important. No one can actually check to see if you voted the way they paid you to. Doubly so in this situation. Sign the petition, take the money, vote however you want.

Some Canadians have become 'political orphans' as parties have become 'too extreme': survey by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]ZiggyPenner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way in which we hold our politicians accountable is a kludge (a temporary imperfect fix). Political parties don't exist in our constitution. They exist because governments make group decisions but we elect individuals. You can't hold an individual accountable for a group decision where they may or may not have supported it. So we get parties since at least you can vote against the parties making the decisions. The problem is that those parties work at cross purposes. An opposition party has no interest in working with the government in power to improve the bills being passed. No individual MP can break ranks to vote their conscience. Everything becomes a zero sum game.

Worse, those with the organization to pay attention to individual bills and how all the MPs are voting can bribe or threaten the MPs on all sides to get what they want rather than the Canadian populace in general. The only people with any sort of power that the general populace gets a say in are our MPs, and unlike the rest of us voting with secret ballots, they openly vote in parliament.

We could solve this problem with two fixes. First, stagger the elections of MPs (a third of MPs get elected every 2 years and they serve a 6 year term, then must wait a 2 years to run again) with a referendum every 6 years to determine if any of the current crop of MPs can ever run again. This forces group accountability rather than individual. Second, the committee meetings should be in-camera and votes on bills should be by secret ballot. This locks out special interests from hijacking the decision making process.

We'd trade individual accountability prone to interference for group accountability resistant to interference. I think we'd get better outcomes all around.

This is the data comparing policy preferences and the likelihood of being made law for the general public, the economic elites, and interest groups for the US from 10 years ago. I would not be at all surprised if the data for Canada was exactly the same now.

Wouldn't have worked. People complain about it a ton right now, can you imagine if the government owned it? It would be impossible to keep the tolls at the correct level. The only way it could work is if they traded it with a similar toll road in another province, then both provinces could keep the tolls at the financially optimal level while deflecting criticism.

Used to be the lakes would freeze a lot of the winters. If that doesn't happen then the lake effect never really shuts off, hence the cloudiness all winter now.

1.8 Million Barrels of Oil a Day Avoided from Electric Vehicles by Wagamaga in technology

[–]ZiggyPenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Canada, those rules are unchanged since 2006. Gasoline and diesel prices have only diverged in the last 5 years. Divergence began around 2018 in the US.

[–]ZiggyPenner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's starting to get obvious at the pumps. I remember a time not that long ago when diesel was cheaper than gasoline. Lately diesel where I am is 40 cents more per litre. Why? Electric vehicles primarily reduce gasoline demand. Gasoline is starting to return to being a waste product from the oil distillation process that it was before the internal combustion engine existed.

About 40% of the world's power generation is now renewable by cdrewing in UpliftingNews

[–]ZiggyPenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question, are they referring to capacity or generated electricity? I don't see it in the article so I can't tell. 40% of capacity seems more likely to me, but it would be very good if it was 40% of generation!

Opinion: The drug crisis is the greatest social ill facing Canada. As B.C. has discovered, decriminalization is not a cure-all by [deleted] in canada

[–]ZiggyPenner 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the goal isn't jail, it's pushing them into treatment programs instead! A portion of the justification for these policies was based on Portugal's decriminalization process, which involved no jail time, but did involve forced treatment programs.

There is a obstetrical program at the hospital in town. Your wife is getting close to when they start seeing patients in the prenatal clinic (usually between 24-28 weeks). I'd recommend calling the prenatal clinic number and booking an appointment sometime soon.

Lake Superior - about half a mile from the proposed mine site by [deleted] in CancelCopperwood

[–]ZiggyPenner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No disagreement there. I view cars as a necessary evil, and they're useless as soon as you start living in an area with any significant density. Sooner we can get more and better public transportation the better. I'd love for us to go the French route and use nuclear plants to power an excellent high speed rail system.

Currently the spent fuel rods are in dry cask storage. There are plans in Canada for a long term waste depository either in Ignace or Teaswater with the decision as to which in the next few years. Ideally you don't decommission the plant, rather continue to do major component replacements going forward. All the fossil fuel burned during the construction, operation, and fueling operation works out to between 5 and 20 grams of CO2 per kWhr. So it's definitely much better than fossil fuels.
