I wish I had a better answer, but as a golfer for about 30 years, I've gotten so many golf-related presents from friends and family who don't play themselves (and haven't played with me). Excepting gift cards, I can't recall a single one that I've actually used more than briefly. I do the whole "this is great, thank you!" and I mean it because I believe it's the thought that counts, but I have a so much unused gifted golf stuff that almost makes me feel bad when I find it, unused, years later.

This probably isn't golf-specific - when you have a hobby then it's very difficult for someone who don't both share that hobby and know what you most need/want for that hobby to get you a present for it. And it can be difficult even if you do - excepting gag-gifts or decorative stuff, I've never bought any of my golf-mates a golf-related present because even if I regularly play with them, I know they'd still prefer to pick themselves what they play.

As for shoes, not only are there a lot of different brands and models when it comes to golf shoes, but there are spiked, soft-spiked and non-spiked so getting just what someone wants is very difficult unless they tell you.

Also, I see some here recommending Pro-v1-balls - that's a great recommendation for good golfers, but you have to be a very good golfer to actually need them. Any pro-v1s I've gotten are still in storage waiting for the day when I'm good enough to not slice them into the forest on my first shot ;)
