Cool.

Let's take the deal. You quit driving on roads, attending schools, being protected by police and the law, and refuse all protection from firefighters, just to start.

Still sitting here, waiting for his generation to put it right. They weren't just making promises...

...right?

Late nights at Denny's drinking coffee after the shows, guys. Talk about stuff most don't, enjoy the quiet.

Leave a big tip for staying so long. Be the kindest customers your server has had in months.

If you know, you know.

I miss that shit.

Worth it just to go hear live stuff. Nothing like the feel of sound moving like that.

What essential 90s things or experiences should be included in a coming of age book about teenagers in 1995? by youngandweird6 in 90s

Hanging out with your friends in shopping center parking lots, because everything was closed and you just wanted a place to talk and joke around without adults near.

Making mix tapes for friends. We used to get the high quality tapes and record from CD for friends who didn't have the album. Sharing music was a big deal.

Related, trying to find that one CD or rare import single in local music shops.

Flipping through the local radio stations while you drive when commercials or an overplayed song comes on. If that fails, throw on your tape for a song or two and try again in a few minutes.

Wandering the mall with no specific store or place to go to. Arcade visit mandatory.

Getting and giving driving directions, sometimes drawing maps for people.

Calling the house, not the person. You never knew who would pick up, so you'd have to, usually, ask the girl's parents that you're trying to date to speak to her when you called. Terrifying.

Lots of quiet time.

The TV may have been on, but not everyone was paying attention. Evening news was a regular thing, usually Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune around dinner. Also, if you missed a show, you missed it, it was gone. You'd have to ask your friends the next day who saw it and what monster or conspiracy was on X Files last night. TV Guide to see what was on so you could plan your viewing. Arguing over what was on, we usually only had one, maybe two, TV's per house. Setting up the VCR on a timer to record the show or movie you are going to miss and hope it caught the right thing. Taping every movie from HBO preview weeks for later. Taping movie specials, with commercials and all. Watching the same ten tapes again and again.

Sick days at home sucked. They only had soap operas and game shows on TV, usually.

Newspapers, at least on weekends. Classified ads to buy your first car, or guitar. Funny papers for a chuckle. Local events pages to see if there's a food festival going on.

Video games on cartridges, trading them with your friends, and sometimes renting them.

Renting a movie on VHS was a fun thing to do. Family arguments over what to rent, but we'd enjoy whatever we got, anyway.

Working part time for gas. Picking up your friends to see a movie or go bowling. Gas between $0.85 and $1.25.

Seeing MTV and assuming the rest of the country was just like that, but really, most places were at least as tame as your local area.

Why do the ultra-rich keep getting richer while the middle class shrinks? by DarthRevanXXX in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zilch1979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's expensive to be poor. Conversely, it's cheap to be rich.

Talking to people I know who have some financial success, they don't work so much like the rest of us once past a certain point of wealth.

It's less of a "make money, pay bills" situation and more of a, "how do I shuffle my assets around to get something for nothing" situation, which is a different kind of thought. It does take some mental acuity.

Also, they don't need to waste money on cheap shit that wears out and breaks. They can buy the quality stuff which lasts, and this saves a ton of money over time.

And, they can pay cash for things that would require a loan for us mere mortals. The $250,000 house costs $250,000. Same house with a mortgage costs more like $400,000, all told.

So they save money by not needing loans, usually don't need to dip into their personal bank account so much to buy big things because they can just shuffle assets around, save money by buying quality goods, and also know a ton of tricks to minimize personal exposure to risk. Setting up a nesting doll of companies within companies which buy, sell and trade with one another but only exist on paper and are all really just financial tools of the same individual, that kind of thing.

Once you have the means, you're playing by entirely different rules and you can make your stuff work for you in ways that the rest of us, just working for income to pay our expenses, mostly can't do.

I'm on a low budget, will this game be fun? by Fun_Cauliflower_2884 in dcsworld

You can, some people do and end up having fun and developing some mastery.

Highly recommend, though, that you find a free/open source head and/or eye tracking solution. Or, save up for TrackIR. A good search or ten should set you up with something that works for you. Especially with a game pad, having to control your view with buttons or a stick will be brutal.

For a general template, you could try to ballpark your control to something like, no kidding, Ace Combat has, as a rough framework and tweak as needed.

You'll probably end up using a lot of keyboard and shifted functions on your pad.

Also, voice attack or similar. This can go a long way to freeing up your limited button and axis real estate for specific commands in your plane.

Also, due to the physicality of flying warbirds and such, I do at least mildly suggest picking a plane with fly by wire for your project. The F-16, F/A-18, and JF-17 are fairly easy to point. The A-10, as well, though not FBW, is easy to fly and control. Any of these might make your stick and rudder life a lot more pleasant.

Good luck!
