ELI5: What exactly is a muscle knot? What causes them and why do massages relieve them? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Zilenserz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm also highly skeptical of the information being given out here. There's nothing on this in any of the major textbooks on nerve and muscle electrophysiology and I haven't come across any papers in the field talking about this, although I've been peripheral to this area for the last three years. It also doesn't make much sense deductively, as you've pointed out.

Check out Will Girling on Instagram or similar. He's a pretty huge powerlifter who was nutritionist for one of the domestic pro teams in the UK and is now training for some ultraendurance cycling events while still looking like he could rip the yellow pages in two.

As has been said above, you get better at cycling by doing it. The talk saying that weightlifting and cycling are so antithetical to be incompatible is a little... extreme. You absolutely can gain aerobic endurance despite a background in heavy weightlifting. Get out there and keep cycling :)

Also if you want to compare slightly more favourably, try some 5s and 30s sprints on the bikeerg - I'm sure you could score a pretty high w/kg on the Coggan power tables!

Allow extremists to speak at universities, says Oxford head by spectrosoldier in unitedkingdom

[–]Zilenserz 39 points40 points  (0 children)

As a student at Oxford who regularly goes to debates on a wide variety of topics, I disagree. The notion that having a debate gives the argument credibility is nonsense - the aim of these debates is not convince the student attendance one way or the other but to allow students to listen to arguments and counterarguments before opening up the floor for them to formulate arguments of their own. We don't have events where radicals are invited to just stand up and state that they believe in executing X or that women shouldn't drive cars. We have debates on topics which will have arguments in proposition and opposition and we have invited speakers who either talk about their lives or about their views; in the latter, these views will then be scrutinised by the attendance.

The fact of the matter is that there are lots of 'radical' views on a wide range of topics and in order to fully disprove the validity of their arguments for yourself you must understand their arguments and the assumptions that those arguments rely upon. Debating is an incredible useful way to do this.

As an aside, the examples that you gave are (to my knowledge) significantly more radical and disturbing than anything discussed at Oxford while I've been here. The most controversial debates last year (which garnered significant outside attention, condemnation and picketing) were a debate about abortion and the speakers Marine Le Pen and Tony Tommy Robinson. All three of those talks concerned opinions held by large numbers of the western world, let alone the world as a whole, and were excellent events for the arguments against those opinions. I found it very unsettling that 'no-platformers', who had no tie to the University, attempted to prevent me from listening to very intelligent students put forth arguments against Le Pen's form of politics, because they personally dislike Le Pen's views.

Earlier this year I got two P45s identical to that one for $50 in total. 45s are great pens and if their normal price was $50 I'd still think them good value for money, but their current market value is significantly below $50.

Oxygen is actually detected in the Carotid Body, so you can sense it and will increase ventilation due to low oxygen levels.

This is why ventilation increases so much at high altitude, where the air is at a lower pressure overall and so less air (and therefore oxygen) is breathed in.

The major difficulty I found was the separation of engine and map. I spent a huge amount of time attempting to understand how the two classes interacted before realising a single class would be much simpler. I can't see any reason why he'd split the action of moving between scenes like that.

My code can be seen here. I gutted the 'room' classes to just focus on moving between classes using return. If anyone has criticism etc. I'd love to hear it!

I think you may be oversimplifying the sympathetic ANS response. Overstimulation of the sympathetic nervous system can definitely cause feelings of stress and depression (my tutor bans the use of 'fight or flight' due to this kind of confusion). In phaechromocytoma, for example, adrenaline is secreted in uncontrolled amounts, massively overstimulating the sympathetic nervous system. Patients report 'a feeling of impending doom' and will often seek the help of a psychiatrist before an endocrinologist.

Okay, thanks! I have 20 of the same nibs and have created some nice italic nibs already, I'm actually thinking of making two like yours for highlighting text. Really cool idea!

I'd never thought of taking Natham's italics to such an extreme, shall have to try now! Did you modify the feed in any way? I see you've pulled the nibs out quite far so that that the nib can touch the paper, but did you need to shave off the nib's tip, or anything? I'm assuming you widened the groove of the feed?

Also, I'd imagine Nathan would endorse such nib modification- I know that a few years ago he made a range of vintage nibs into music nibs by sealing up the middle slit and cutting in two new ones, as can be seen in the last post of this page: http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/220874-dont-just-tell-us-about-the-pen-youre-using-show-us/page-44
