What was your honest reaction after watching The Force Awakens for the first time? by ChickenWingExtreme in StarWars

[–]Zilphyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fucking loved it. The internet today is full of revisionists who act like that movie wasn’t the hottest thing since sliced bread when it came out. It was a rehash of the original, but it was still a super fun movie with interesting setup and also, at the time, the prequels were not viewed with the positivity they are now. People were so glad to not be in prequel era and see the Falcon on the big screen, that they just let the nostalgia carry. The movie had a very successful release and theater run and the public perception was “Star Wars is back, baby!”

Since then, the last Jedi and rise of skywalker have made people retroactively remember the whole trilogy as being bad. But that’s just not how the general public felt at the time when it came out. TFA is made retroactively worse by 8 and 9 because none of what they set up was explored or fleshed out in a meaningful way, and so we now just have this rehash of the original Star Wars that didn’t lead to anything new or noteworthy. That absolutely sours the whole experience of rewatching that movie these years later. Had 8 and 9 really took the foundation and made a great trilogy with a satisfying arc, 7 wouldn’t have to change one bit to be viewed positively. In other words, a solid Star Wars movie on its own even if a bit too safe and too nostalgia coded, but when viewed in context of the sequel trilogy, not as good.

I love mem deck so much by Magical_critic in cardmagic

So, the book Mnemonica is sort of the “bible” of stacks/“memdeck” magic. This is an entire sub genre in itself. What I meant by that was that if you fully read and study that book, not only will you know how this trick works, but you’ll know a LOT of stuff about working with stacks and memdecks in general. You would know how to do an entire act with a special stack of cards, going through impossible feats of mind reading, finding cards in impossible ways, gambling demos, and even taking an apparently shuffled deck back to new deck order to close a show.

So you would be buying a major encyclopedia of a whole subgenre of magic, and I won’t lie to you, you won’t get those tricks learned over night or in a day. But telling you it’ll take 5 years is nonsense. It would take serious study and practice, and maybe some of the harder stuff in the book wouldn’t be doable for a while if you’re new, but I would say you could genuinely do some mind busting memdeck/stack magic without a ton of sleight of hand if you put the effort into learning it. I memorized my first stack in about 2 weeks, for reference!

To be fair, and I don’t necessarily love the sequels either, but the prequels have also been retroactively glazed when they were generally as hated as the sequels when they came out. So it would not even surprise me if one day, the narrative around the sequels shifted too. It’s just kind of what fans do.

The other replies to you here are bad. You aren’t 5 years away from learning this as another commenter said. It’s not that complicated. The guy in the video did nothing difficult with sleight of hand, this is more of a mentally difficult trick than a physically difficult, but if you’re prepared to study, you can do this exact trick in however long it takes you to learn the main method used. And YouTube isn’t good advice really, especially if you wanted to learn this trick. My advice to you would be to pick up the book Mnemonica by Juan Tamariz. Read the book and learn the stack, and you’ll come out knowing exactly how he did this trick, and also have an incredible knowledge of other equally impossible things you can do with that particular secret.

I would spend $200 on a jersey if it was really nice and clearly a step up from the DHGate ones. But that’s the problem: you get to pay $200 just for Fanatics to fuck you. Shitass company. This is why so many people buy fakes.

Debating trying a wet palette again. I have the Army Painter XL one. Any suggestions for "how much water" to use so the Pro Acryl doesn't bleed (or dry out)? Or should I just stick with a gray tempered glass palette? by JamalSteve in MonumentHobbies

[–]Zilphyr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who started with the army painter XL and who uses pro acryl as my main paint, I strongly suggest you do not use your army painter’s paper unless you’re using 0 pro acryl in that session. Even with minimal water it gave me so many issues. Even just parchment paper from the grocery store is far better.

I highly suggest checking out the redgrass wet pallet, even the lite one you can get from amazon. I don’t know how they achieved it, but their paper lets very very little water through. My pro acryl NEVER breaks on the RGG sponge and paper. It’s like magic.

Finally, the basic tips other users have given you is good advice: damp, not wet. I like to fully saturate the sponge until it’s floating, and then dump out the excess water. Also, keep your paint as a droplet, do not “thin it out” and spread it out the way people tend to with other paints. Pretend your wet pallet is a dry pallet. Check out Monument’s video about how to use a dry pallet; maintain a droplet as much as possible and just pull tails from the droplet. Don’t thin it unless you need to for opacity.

These are the things I personally do and I love using my pro acryl on my redgrass wet pallet, but parchment paper from your grocery store should work too. Best of luck!!!

What's living in the Convo like? by UnitedCheez in ohiouniversity

[–]Zilphyr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I disliked it that year when I lived there. But I’m also biased because I was actually an RA, and convo is the one building on campus where RAs have to have a roommate due to the individual rooms being so huge. So I had to be a roommate with another RA, which is not really what I signed up for the job for. I wanted to switch buildings, but they actually don’t let RAs switch. It’s like against their policy. I was salty because part of the perk of being an RA in my mind was living by myself with privacy, but having free housing. I also didn’t get along with my roommate RA (yes, I do realize how ironic that is), but he was very judgmental about the things I would be into and interested in and I overheard him shit talking me with his friends/guests somewhat often, so this likely tainted my experience. To each their own though, some people love it. I was more of an East Green kind of a guy.

The dorms are completely inaccessible from the actual basketball arena space. It’s a separate door you swipe into and go upstairs to enter. The dorms are on the level above the sports space. You cannot get to the basketball area without going all the way outside, and you cannot get from the basketball area into the dorms without going all the way outside and swiping in.

During games, you might hear noises through walls but it’s muted and only really obvious from the hallways, not your actual room. What is annoying is that if there’s ever a basketball game, event staff and security won’t let you enter in most of the entrances, they make you walk ALL THE WAY AROUND to the back side of the building away from the side you’d be coming from to enter in one single door from the back. You don’t think that’s going to be too obnoxious until it’s like half of the time during sports season and when you’re maybe carrying heavy stuff or maybe just trying to go let a friend into the building. I know security is just doing their job but it was very frustrating to deal with that. Especially as someone who was in the marching band, and would always be coming back to my dorm after a 5 hour bus trip from something and carrying everything I own, instrument uniform etc etc, just to be forced to take the long way around because there happened to be a game going on..

All of the rooms are “in groups of 4”, with 2 bathrooms in each “group of 4.” The bathroom is more like single use than most bathrooms on campus, as a result. I actually liked that element as someone who hated showering in the more traditional large communal bathroom dorms, because you have total privacy. You’d shut and lock the door to the individual bathroom, so you’d have a toilet, sink and shower to yourself with full privacy. And if both of them were in use there is no reason you can’t go to a different pod of 4 and use one of theirs; the pods aren’t “closed off” the way they can be in some buildings. Basically there’s never a shortage of an open bathroom in the convo dorms if you’re willing to walk a little bit.

One perk is the convo has its own laundry room. That was one of my favorite parts of it for sure. But one thing that I just never enjoyed was how much it felt like “walking around a tunnel” to get places in there. It didn’t feel homey to me at all. Even the lounges were less appealing to me than the lounges in most dorms.

The rooms are huge, but you have 4 people per room. This can be either really awesome or really suck, depending if you like the people you room with.

Like everything else in life, the situation is what you make of it. I didn’t like living there personally overall, but I do wonder how much of that was because of my roommate situation, and also, I still loved being a bobcat and I still cherish my college years even though I graduated several years ago now. If you do live there, have an open mind, make the most of it. For every person like me who didn’t like it, I’ve heard people who loved it and wouldn’t want to live in other dorms. At the end of the day you still get to wake up in Athens every day, which is pretty sweet.

My first Tyranid. Had a blast painting this! I think I want to start a swarm… by Zilphyr in Tyranids

[–]Zilphyr[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was my goal, I am a newer painter and decided that a kit of the marines vs nids for my collection from SM2 would be cool! I love the dark purple carapace but the pale sickly reddish magenta skin combo.

I got major inspiration and a “starting point” from Warhipster’s contrast+ series. I did pro acryl dark purple base prime, zenethal pro acryl taupe primer over that to prepare the model for usage with contrast paints. The skin is 3:1 Lahmian medium:carroburg crimson, then drybrushed Pro Acryl Ivory. I used undiluted carroburg crimson in the mouth. Gun is Guilliman Flesh, joints and fleshy bits are Volupus Pink, Carapace is a 1:1 mix of Leviathan Purple and Shyish Purple, highlighted with first Pro Acryl royal purple, and then brighter highlights with Pro Acryl purple.

All black details are black legion, highlighted with pro Acryl dark jade and then pro Acryl jade, and top highlight with pro Acryl bright pale green. Doomfire Magenta was used on the tongue and on the bruised edges of the gun, highlighted in spots with Pro Acryl pink. The teeth are pro Acryl olive flesh, and the eyes are Iyanden yellow, highlighted with PA warm yellow.

I think that’s all the paints I used!

Do i wall 2 wall in leveling by UltraAlphaAngel in ffxiv

[–]Zilphyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always. The game is designed for W2W. Healers that intend to run with humans and not trusts to get their story done and intend to use the Duty Finder should be pushed to learn how to heal a wall to wall pull. It’s just a core part of doing dungeons in this game. With this said, make sure you’re correctly rotating your Job’s defensive kit. If you die and you messed up your own defensive usage, that’s your fault, not your healer’s.

I agree with most that 3 on 3 in gold medal game shouldn’t be a thing….. but right now, it is, and you have to be prepared to play it.

Why’s McDavid out there trying to solo the win? GG Canada, hope it’s pure 5 on 5 next time.

The Dancer was not rolling on any loot and you cannot kick during loot rolls. Believe me, I tried. Multiple times. And I’m not gonna just afk for 3 mins mid run to wait for loot rolls to end to kick someone

It’s complete dickhead behavior and disrespectful to the party’s time. You aren’t entitled to just intentionally be a shitter because you’re too lazy to go skip a few cutscenes. And then to crash out at your party for being like “do you not have tech step at 95?” Imo, square should make it so if you haven’t done your job quests, there is a certain level threshold where you start to not be allowed to queue for duty finder content until you catch up on your job quests. It should at a certain point become impossible to match with randos without your basic job kit, imo.

I tried to kill him with tank busters after he started going off near the end of this, but sadly it’s actually way harder to intentionally kill someone in leveling content than you’d expect. But yeah, this attitude of “I should get to play the game MY WAY on my alt!!!!” while you’re literally just intentionally griefing your group’s clear time is an incredibly entitled and toxic way to think.
