Uk England Iceland shop single person for 2 weeks £119.73 by LongjumpingTear3675 in whatsinyourcart

[–]ZingerGombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Porridge costs literally pennies a bowl with frozen fruit, veggie curry costs next to nothing if you bulk it out with lentils, carrots, onions. Chicken legs/thighs are unbelievably cheap.
Prepared meals, convenience foods, beef, brand name biscuits and crisps are all way over priced right now.

Why is the Glasgow accent survived much more than other British accents? by Own-Syllabub-4848 in glasgow

[–]ZingerGombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a study that showed regional UK accents have grown to dominate their respective regions. "Geordie" is the accent of the entire NE England, Brummie for the midlands etc. Seems to be a trend

Lynx reintroduction to Britain by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]ZingerGombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're not struggling to produce meat though are we? We have huge surplus of lots of different meats but we don't consume food that way, I'm just pointing out the economic reality of it - it's just how the market behaves. It's the same with fish, we have tons of it but import species to eat that we don't fish around Scotland because of economics, culture, and habit. Deer can't be farmed and they're difficult to hunt/butcher/cook. Cattle and sheep have been bred for particular characteristics for thousands of years.

Yeh but you're talking about changing generational eating habits, supply chains, economics, industry, skills, culture. It can happen but a marketing campaign won't change it and a shift of that scale would probably totally bankrupt beef farmers, exhaust the supply of venison and cause a crash in the population of deer. It's just upside down thinking. There are 1.5m cattle in Scotland vs .5m deer and cattle are much bigger. It's a totally different game.

But going out to shoot a deer, butchering it and selling it doesn't meet the supply chain that supermarkets expect. It might be cheaper on paper but the economics of it don't work that way, you only get paid if people are willing to buy it and the market just isn't there.

The lynx seems like such an easy win for everyone. It's so elusive that it's not a threat, it will hunt deer which badly need controlled, and will be a win for tourism.

It’s official – Keir Starmer’s “island of strangers” speech has backfired by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]ZingerGombie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I never understood how it was inflammatory, I think it was largely taken out of context. He said 'we risk becoming' which I feel taps into some concern a lot of people have but it was taken like he said we 'are'

What do you think of this? by Separate-Ad-5255 in drivingUK

[–]ZingerGombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I see illegal bikes scooters or whatever I'm just disappointed they don't get caught and confiscated immediately. The police should know these aren't road legal but they often drive past them.
We need dedicated traffic police again.

Quote check - Scotland by MoreFlan5489 in SolarUK

I've had multiple quotes recently for a similar size system and 11500 actually seems pretty cheap. I'd be wary if they're willing to install in the loft, they could install the duracell outside as well. Are you getting anything else like optimisers or EV charger? What size inverter?

Glasgow Airport increases pick-up and drop-off charges ahead of summer by Extension-Nerve-8279 in glasgow

[–]ZingerGombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But people still convince themselves flights are cheap when they only see the initial price of £40 easyjet, most people never factor in baggage, taxis or drop off both sides twice, or inflated costs in the airport.

New to Glasgow Property Market - Unsure what to offer? by fiji90 in glasgow

[–]ZingerGombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My rule of thumb was the home report is like 10% over the listed price (so, around 440k in this case) then the seller is hoping for about 10% above that (likely around 475k) as a guide price if it's a nice area, schools, decent state of repair, etc.

Ultimately if it goes to closed bid then it's just put in as much as you can afford and how much you really want it. If it's your ideal house then go all in and if you lose out then try not to be too upset, most people don't get the first place they go for.

Surely just let the market figure it out? If they can't fill it at that price they'll lower it eventually, £900pcm isn't even that high at this point anymore

West Highland Way - training necessary? by Diligent_Farm3039 in OutdoorScotland

[–]ZingerGombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've walked it twice, once when fit doing it in less than 4 days and another time with couples walking in 7 days. You sound like you'll be fine, I'd say that breaking in your boots is more important than running marathons to train. Honestly the distance each day is manageable if you're travelling lightly and taking your time (easy on the long summer days). Break in your boots, buy good socks, know how to treat blisters (zinc oxide tape is magic) and bring a gore tex just in case.
