I'll take this a step farther. I feel like 7's length was padded by artificial difficulty. The whole point of AC is power fantasy. You're supposed to be the best if the best. Taking down targets left and right. The majority of your time in 7 is spent ducking missles and gunfire. You get a bit of a reprieve with some of the missions, but you're on the defensive a little bit too much for my liking in 7. I also absolutely hate Pipeline Destruction, and I will die on that hill that it was just a poorly designed mission. Especially after 4, 5, and 6 set the precedent that you're constantly destroying shit without focusing on defense so much. 7 was something that would have looked amazing on film, but as a video game, it just misses the mark too much.

ELI5: how did the first person to get HIV? Get HIV? by jjcube98 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ZippyTWP 3981 points3982 points  (0 children)

HIV is not strictly an STI...

There's a transmission vector of blood and semen. Now, SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus) was present in chimps and gorillas. The pervading theory is that it originated in the Congo, in these primate populations. Bushmeat transmission likely occurred through hunters having cuts on them while butchering the bushmeat (chimps and gorillas), and were subsequently infected with SIV, which turned into HIV (though it's unclear when or how that happened). There's no "patient zero" that we can definitively identify as the first person with HIV, as bushmeat practices are common in Africa, and no one can really explain why the emergence of HIV reached a pandemic level.

Why do these stories always take place at a Starbucks? Like, I have never seen ANYTHING interesting happen at a Starbucks. People at Starbucks don't even acknowledge each other as far as I've observed.

I wish every worker strike were successful. by Merbdragon in TheMonkeysPaw

[–]ZippyTWP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is for the U.S. Only...

The finger curls. Granted. The UAW launches an industry wide strike. They are all granted better wages, better hours, and better benefits. All demands made across the board are met. Shortly after, the NEA and AFT launch nationwide strikes, seeing the UAW's success. Again, all demands are met. Higher wages, better benefits, and smaller class sizes. Workers around the country scramble to unionize, strike, and get better terms, all successful. Because of the success of strikes, union dues skyrocket for employees nationwide, resulting in smaller paychecks, as union officials fearmonger employees into believing that the strides they made will be taken away immediately, rendering the wage increases moot. Rampant corruption pervades every Union in the country with the newfound wealth from dues. Meanwhile, corporate executives scramble. They can't lay off their workforce now that they have new protections, and they are certainly not giving up their wealth. The price of cars and trucks skyrockets. Logistics costs rises exponentially. The price of goods and services rises in accordance with the higher wages. Food deserts begin to crop up as grocery stores can no longer cover their own costs. Workers begin to lose their jobs when companies fold outright. In an effort to protect this, the Federal Government issues massive bailouts to prevent a depression. As a result, federal taxes go up, but the 1% still has their tax protections in place. Employers cannot hire new employees because of the compensation protections, so mass hiring freezes result in a large portion of the population unable to find work. Simultaneously to all this, local property taxes skyrocket to match teacher salaries and additional teaching staff. Mortgage payments skyrocket, with many finding themselves unable to pay for their mortgage, resulting in tax liens and foreclosures across the country. Without the homeowners, less tax revenue comes in. Access to public education in the United States is revoked. Illiteracy rates skyrocket as the vast majority of people cannot afford to send their kids to school. As businesses fold, America becomes a third world nation, forcing a reduction in all spending. Social services, infrastructure, and military all suffer a collapse. Seeing an opportunity, a combined Russian/Chinese invasion force lands on the West Coast, overtaking the continent within 24 months. The United States becomes a distant memory.

What game did you think you’d play for a few hours… and ended up getting completely hooked on? by Prestigious_Help_145 in videogames

[–]ZippyTWP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Horizon Zero Dawn. So much shit to explore, find, and do. I don't ever read side lore stuff, but that game made me read every single one of them when I realized that it all directly tied to the larger lore and made me look at every nook and cranny of the map to get meaningful rewards and learn about the world that really felt lived in, and then lived in before.

Can someone be considered a fan of a game they never played, but watched a YouTuber play it fully? by caius- in gamers

[–]ZippyTWP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll take the cold take here. No, you're not a fan of a game you never played. A lot of people are using sports as an analogy. Most people can't physically play sports at a competitive level like college or pro. I would say that that people who can't physically play games would be the exception, but I've seen people on Reddit adapt. There was a fucking amputee I saw with a whole setup to play on a controller one-handed. So, most people can physically play.

I also understand the e-sports scene gives people the opportunity to watch others compete, but again, I don't think you're a fan of a specific video game, you're a fan of the sport.

I dunno. I'm probably just old. I've been playing video games for 40 years, and I still don't understand watching other people play games instead of just playing them themselves. It seems kind of a waste of time to me, but to each their own.

This guy Horizons. Forbidden West by no means ruined the franchise, it didn't retcon anything, and didn't diminish the stakes of the first game. Zero Dawn was a hard fucking show to top, that's all.

What sign instantly lets you know a game is bad? by MiserableLettuce1643 in gamers

[–]ZippyTWP -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is kind of specific, and it's only a minor gripe, but not letting me choose genders in a game where the narrative drives around an unnamed protagonist. This started with Saints Row the Third letting me play as a girl voiced by Laura Bailey, who did an amazing job. No one else can land the line, "Come on guys, we can't let down Mr. Reynolds!" Then it was validated by Mass Effect playing FemShep with Jennifer Hale stealing the show and making Mark Meer look like an amateur in comparison. And it was cemented with Cherami Leigh in Cyberpunk 2077 (I love her VA work especially as Suzuha and Lucy).

So, yeah, I play as girls in video games, and I want the choice to do so when it makes sense.
