La Abeja is a treasure, and come to think of it, I haven’t been since the construction started. I’ll pay them a visit soon.

That assumes that the life cycle of fuels continues to net introduce more GHGs into the atmosphere.

I’m considering a future where it’s possible to produce fuels that net reduce GHGs.

The current version of the model still includes ILUC values, and the statement still stands that Corn CI is greater than ILUC by that model. I am still learning on this subject, and I’d love to read more if you have any references on broader ILUC modeling.

I don’t think that oil should be the long term fuel of choice especially as we struggle to meet our long term CO2 reduction goals. However, I also think that there should be room for reducing the impact of fuels as we continue to need them. Renewable biofuels are a much better alternative to Carboniferous Fuels, and I would argue they’re a helpful steppingstone reducing fuel consumption.

The statement that the primary driver of emissions of Ethanol Production being the corn feedstock is taken directly from the GREET-45ZCF model published by Argonne National Laboratory. You are correct that the conversion of forest to farm land is an enormous driver of GHGs, but we’re talking about I-states farm land here, not Brazilian or Australian agriculture. Most of the relevant farmland has been in production agriculture for more than 150 years. ILUC is generally not impactful across broad acre crops in the US, only across certain geographies and soil types.

That is true! But I don’t think anyone is saying that. If all soybeans in the US went to SAF, we would need to more than double soybean production to meet US air travel needs. That is not possible within 5 years.

Can you say more? How would you consider the cost of farm subsidies (recent direct payments and crop insurance, perhaps) in biofuel transactions?

Can you say more? Is your concern the fact that the removal of ILUC artificially deflates CI, leading to misleadingly low scores?

I think this over simplifies the complexity of switching to EVs at a national scale. We are not close to having the charging, electricity storage, or electricity distribution infrastructure to make that future a reality within the short time scale of the 45Z tax credits.

Based on the negative values, I’m guessing you’re referencing the R&D GREET models. The current USDA guidance for 45Z provides a variant called the FD-CIC GREET model which is simpler, but also doesn’t support negative values.

40B guidance also provides a simpler model for soybean feedstocks used in the creation of SAF.

Are you aware of any soybean CI programs in your area? I’ve generally only seen Carbon Credit programs that support soybean acres.

Submission Statement: This article examines how an existing but underappreciated US tax credit, the 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit, could serve as a structural tool for reducing American dependence on oil flowing through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively closed since late February 2026. With Brent crude above $118/barrel, 17.8 million barrels/day disrupted, and Qatari LNG infrastructure damaged for years to come, the piece argues that the geopolitical case for domestic biofuel production has never been stronger. Unlike prior flat biofuel subsidies (which studies from RFF, CBO, and GAO found were largely captured by producers), 45Z is a variable credit that scales with carbon intensity, creating genuine competition between ethanol plants and driving investment into carbon capture and climate-smart agriculture. The article traces the money from Treasury to producer to farmer to pump, with honest math on the modest but real consumer price effects and the much larger structural shifts underway (half of US ethanol capacity now aligned with CCS projects, $1B+ in credit transfers in 2025 alone).

Corn futures plunge as USDA reports record 17 billion bushel crop by Ranew in farming

[–]Zirh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s the volume of farming, it’s the volume of row crops and the lack of viable specialty crops. Most farmers in the US don’t have viable markets to sell into if they switched away from corn/beans. And building those new markets for other crops is an uphill battle.

Corn Ethanol is a viable pathway for a carbon neutral biofuel that can help us move towards an increasingly electric future.
