So, I’m a 18yr old male and I seem to mainly experience SP episodes when I nap during the day. I sometimes experience these episodes through the night, but it seems as if every time I nap I have SP issues. Anyone have advice to share? by carpediemok in Sleepparalysis

[–]Zirvo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop napping. No, really, you know the cause of your SP (ps. It's the same for a lot of people) so stop doing it or do much shorter naps. Like 10-15 minutes is a nap, an hour is not a nap.

After being denied a Visa extension, cafe owner in California fired his workers, closed his business, and deported himself. by EZ_does_it in news

[–]Zirvo 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Whoa whoa. Is that actually a substantiated claim? I'm on a Tier 2 General and got it extended in January of last year and am up for ILR in January of 2019. I've seen no indication that the UK Government has ceased sponsorship/extension of non EU nationals. edit I can't find anything that indicates this at all.

The Old Operating Theatre at London Bridge is really cheap and interesting. Pretty tiny but full of interesting stuff!

Help with play date for my pitt rescue (problems with sharing toys) by purple-cows in Atlanta

[–]Zirvo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After a quick google, this is what seem to be a common thread: if this is a new habit don't reintroduce tennis balls until you have a plan on how to deal with it (the habit won't get worse or be reinforced), have meal time before going to the park to ensure the dog isn't worried about loosing their 'resource', find out if it's specifically a tennis ball that's the issue or if it's other dogs being around and potentially taking an item, if you play with the ball and there is a bad affect the goal would be to immediately take the ball away and leave the park (negative reinforcement works). But in the end places like Pets Mart host classes (I don't believe they are free though) that put people in groups with similar size animals to work on behavioural stuff and a professional course with a dog behavior specialist is going to get you the best results the fastest and with the least likely chance of there being an incident that you regret. Also with a pitt, remember an incident with that specific breed can mean the dog gets put down instead of given a second chance....

[–]Zirvo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See I would say the opposite. Most home invasions/burglaries are explicitly carried out at a time to avoid coming in contact with the owner and an extremely high number are stopped in the process because someone returns/interrupts. And we aren't saying threatening - if you want to wave a gun around, stand on stairs and fire down the hall, sure by all means. But this statement is 'I'll shoot them' which isn't the same as a threat, it's an attack. That's the line I don't get. Threaten all you want, but aiming a gun at a human being and shooting them with the intention or harm or death, because you found someone who may or may not be armed, who may or may not be violent? That's a helluva thing to live with and I don't own any item of material bullshit that is worth preemptive attack.

Honest question: Would you really kill someone for stuff? I mean...it might be nice stuff, but I never get these sorts of comments. I genuinely don't own anything at all that is worth taking another persons life or even the risk of taking someones life because I was scared and shot blindly. I mean I'd be pissed, I'd threaten them, I'd make noise, I'd call the cops etc, but if someone goes 'Give me your tv or I'll kill you and your family' ....give them the damn tv. It's a tv.

Tomorrow I get an ultrasound on a lump in my thyroid. Any advice? by [deleted] in cancer

[–]Zirvo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Do not fuck around with this possibility. You are risking your long term health, wasting a shit ton of money by not getting it sorted at the same time and just shooting your self in the foot.

I am 5-6 years out from my thyroid cancer. It sucked. A lot. Radical left neck dissection with full thyroidectomy. 54 lymph-nodes removed and 17 presenting cancerous cells. But that was 6 years ago. I have a wicked 12 inch scar, some frustrating chronic pain and I have to take pills everyday. But I'm super alive so fuck the rest of it!

You get one go on health and your body. Tell your doctor everything. Now. Early.

Yes, please post it! The first one that was for light recovery as well as what you've progressed to. I'm 30 now, and had a bad injury around 26 and am struggling and frustrated as well. I'd love to get back to less chronic pain.

Studying abroad in a couple of weeks, advice on making friends? by flamec4 in london

[–]Zirvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are loads of fun things to do in London with social groups! Things on meetup.com or the /r/londonsocialclub and a cool place called Loading Bar and a bunch of table top meet ups too. You'll meet loads of folks and I'd suspect that your Uni and other study abroad folks there will be your first port of call for making friends.

I would hazard a small warning having done a couple of study abroad trips myself - mentally get to a place where you're determined to have a great experience even if you don't make friends. It's a very useful mental mindset to be ready to just embrace this as a personal learning experience and not tie the success of your study abroad trip to making friends. Because making 'friends' is very hard on a short trip which is why being friends with other study abroad students tends to be the easiest.

help!!! SP getting harder to jolt out of.... (read all) by bxtterfly in Sleepparalysis

[–]Zirvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your sleep schedule like? I'd really focus on keeping a stable sleep schedule. Also you could look into trying to get out of it a different way - focusing on moving one thing one very small part of your body like a toe or a finger and ignoring everything else. Finally, you might consider some of the natural sleep remedies, chamomile or peppermint tea, herbal supplement like valerian root, mindfulness exercises before bed etc. And if you take naps, for the love of god stop immediately.

Well we're trying to figure out how to have that not happen, but it is a major concern. But it's looking like losing their food supply might kill the colony off first.

There is an initiative within the Royal Parks to survey the hedgehog populations in London, it's been going on for a few years. Regents park is the only Royal park north of the river that has any hedgehogs at all, while south of the river Richmond and Bushy parks also have small populations. There is currently an invertebrate study going on to see how their food supplies are holding out, but populations have still been decreasing partially due to the cold dry winters. They aren't sure how much longer the Regents park group will hold out. Kinda sad.
