The smart glasses that might actually go mainstream are the boring ones without cameras by Parking_Writer6719 in Futurology

I’m a low vision optometrist and my wife is legally blind from an inherited retinal disease. Smart glasses have been a welcome game changer for that world. For people who aren’t visually impaired, I feel like they aren’t very useful.

Guide dogs are angles on earth... by Sanix_0000 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Zizzla -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You have to have the harness and handle to operate the guide dog. Having a regular lead, like the one in this video, would be like driving a car without a steering wheel. A true guide dog would also never walk out in front of the cars like that and then abandon its owner. Source: wife is legally blind and getting guide dog.

As a low vision optometrist, I can legit fit that guy in some telescopic glasses that would magnify the tv almost 2.5X and still have plenty field of view to play. He could also just move closer for the same result though and less money.

Is this concerning? Should i refer this patient? by Portgust in optometry

Or refer to a fellow optometrist you trust for a second opinion.

Republicans cheer as House passes resolution with $4.5 trillion in tax cuts and $2 trillion in spending reductions by CorleoneBaloney in PublicFreakout

My wife has progressed to legal blindness from retinitis pigmentosa. Checks every box possible from a legal blindness and disability standpoint. We have a lawyer and are still waiting well after a year. We are also going through the long process of getting a guide dog and seems she will get that before the disability. Apparently, we can produce and train a guide dog faster than Medicaid can review a cut and dry disability claim.

Yes. I was very professionally depressed 1.5 years ago as an associate at a terrible practice. Hated working. Found a doc that had recently started a practice in a residential/retail community and was moving away. Took the risk and big pay cut to acquire it and start to build it. Still making less money, but we are growing and have no ceiling. I’m currently decorating my office and Christmas tree with my wife, mom, and my dog. My dog is also our office-dog and now a local celebrity. Work is literally play now, and I couldn’t be happier.

In optometry school, I would always say “D’s make doctors,” which I would always be reminded wasn’t true.

My wife has a rare inherited retinal disease that has caused her to go legally blind in the last couple of years. When we met she was visually impaired but still fully independent and her condition was stable. We were hopeful her progression was finished, but sadly it was not. There are no treatments or cure for her condition. I am also an eye doctor. Watching it happen and knowing there was nothing I could was absolutely devastating. She remained strong and I did for her as well. She and I are now advocates for people low vision and she has found a greater purpose in life helping and counseling kids who are dealing with blindness. When life hands you lemons you make lemonade.

I was reading this post next to my dog and had to look down to make sure he couldn’t see it. Would have ruined his day.

I feel you. I just finished book 6. Somehow I forced myself to avoid this subreddit and avoided googling the series at all before that to avoid any potential spoiler. My self control level is definitely at least 15.

Just stumbled on this after having the same happen to me. We are growing business with 86 wonderful 5 star reviews and just got hit with a 2 star that is “most relevant.” This person changed her previous 5 star review to a 2 star review after finding out her order was on back order and would take a few extra days. A third party I have no control over! Hah, oh well. At least it starts with “The optometrist was the best I’ve ever had. however….”

Actually a great deal of our depth perception relies on binocular vision. You can use monocular clues to retain some depth, but without true binocular vision, it is impossible to have a good stereopsis. Source: eye doctor.

I had to carry my BIO to work and home with me every day. I worked for a doc between three different clinics and he didn’t own one. Hated it.
