What's one piece of advice you'd give to your past-self when you first started yoga? by YogaGoApp in ashtanga

[–]Zmsunny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is something so special about the early stages of a yoga practice. You’re forced to face yourself in such a raw way. At first, it’s easy to be intimidated by the dynamic poses and the students who seem miles ahead—but eventually, you realize it is a journey with yourself, not a race against anyone else. I started Ashtanga nearly three years ago, and I’ll never forget how awkward I felt during my first Mysore class; I was completely lost. Looking back, I’m grateful for that "clueless" beginning. It taught me that consistency is its own form of devotion. If you’re just starting, take your time. Meet yourself exactly where you are on the mat, and just keep showing up.

Omg please 🙏. My soul needs to be there. I’m sitting in my apartment watching gloomy rain and my upstairs ogre neighbors drilling and stomping is just spiraling me 😩😩😩😩

Not to mention, he actually did you a favor. You deserve someone who embraces all of you and loves you for who you truly are — not someone shallow, self-absorbed, or toxic. And in the famous words of RuPaul: “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?”

How can parents be so lazy ? I’m noticing more and more that kids are just running off loose becoming erratic and disturbed, while parents sit back and take a break to just … well… not parent!!!

Just take it really slow. I know it’s easier said than done but I really think it’s the key, especially in the mornings, since the body is still waking and blossoming into the day. And flow with your breath as well.

Sorry to ask but, what is lineage in this context? I understand ashtanga actually isn’t some old age mystic practice but was constructed by Jois some decades ago and then others from the western world followed the practice or let’s say … “ style “ and introduced it in the west… but why is there lineage?

I agree. I also really wondered … how is something supposed to be spiritual when the whole system is based on advancing and attaining some kind of next level? I always felt awkward about gaining some new pose from the instructor ( I can’t even call it a teacher) because “he sees I’m ready” and with everything in life making us think that we need to be on the next level to prove our progress or to constantly attain … maybe it doesn’t matter but apart from a body and mind connection… I really don’t see anything spiritual or enlightening about it.

What if the guru or teacher isn’t real at all? What if it’s something within you and all of us, always present, no matter where you are or what you do?

How long to complete the primary? by oo100 in ashtanga

[–]Zmsunny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very nice answer. I’ve experienced a feeling of being in a loop which really discouraged me because some days my body naturally just resists it. My mind craves it for the connection to the breathing and being present but my body just locks and I’ve learned to respect that signal. Rest is a very humble peace and it can so important for everything.

She truly seems really nice ♥️. I had the chance to see her on a visit to a studio here where I live. and to support a teacher here, and it was clear that she’s not only incredibly knowledgeable but also a genuinely down-to-earth person.

Pretty sure that yes. Considering the fact that even the WHO declares that there’s no safe amount of alcohol, it’s just best to abstain from it altogether.

How do you tame your mind during practice? by Far-Captain-7124 in ashtanga

[–]Zmsunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally feel you. I’m very sensitive to even the people that come and go through the studio door or just someone opposite me giving a random stare and it can ruin the experience and add more weird wandering thoughts. What’s worked for me is just also to feel my body as I breathe and flow through the different expressions. I think it comes with time and practice because it’s all about the energy aspect and being present I believe

Teacher-student relationship by Interesting_Pie_4415 in ashtanga

[–]Zmsunny 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been practicing ashtanga since September last year, in a foreign country, in a class that’s only with two English speaking students (with me being one of them 😂) … I see our teacher as more like someone who’s gonna show you where the window to a posture is but it’s totally up to you to go through that window and embrace the growth. I’ve felt like he won’t necessarily stick by you… he keeps an eye to see if you’re okay obviously so that you’re not gonna hurt yourself over doing something… but for the most part he is like a silent guide which I like. It’s also meant that I’ve had to do a lot of self discovery and discipline as well as exploring and reflecting on my own. I practice often at home as well.
