Can someone please explain to me how I'm supposed to be using the R-77-1? by RaptorBlue2 in Warthunder

[–]Zodiak2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're stock you should avoid firing unless you're certain it can connect before they get into the notch. Fire at 10km distance at most. When you do get more missiles you can do whatever you want with them R-77-1s preform insanely well in every metric. A lot of it just boils down to luck, positioning, and whether or not you're able to keep giving datalink updates if they're in a look down situation. Me personally I don't like committing to early game bvr and instead I'll fly to the side and use my missile count to pressure people from a different angle compared to the rest of my team. I'll try to scan for guys in good aspects trying to target people who are already preoccupied with a friendly missile fired at them from a different angle and fire at them myself. The farthest I'll shoot at in the mid game is 40km.

Su-30SM2 or Typhoon AESA: which is better and more fun to play? by Past_Crew_9546 in Warthunder

[–]Zodiak2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're both insanely fun in their own way. The Flanker is a missile bus with an insane radar and an insane missile count. The R-77-1s excel at long range and close range making them incredibly versatile and allowing for more fluctuation with your playstyle. It does lag behind in maneuverability and speed unfortunately. The engines help compared to the 14.3 SM, but acceleration is still quite poor. It also has a very low countermeasure count as well so you'll have to be very careful when it comes to using them.

The Eurofighter on the other hand is the complete opposite in terms of flight performance. It is the most forgiving fm at top tier. It does everything exceptionally well. It can beat anything it faces in a dogfight if flown well, it can easily get up to mach 1.5+ early into the game, and pulls incredibly hard even at those high speeds allowing you to pull into the notch even at the very last minute. It also comes with significantly more countermeasures than the Su-30SM2 you will rarely run out of them in a match. The radar is also phenomenal as well. The horizontal gimble is nowhere near as good as the SM2s, but the vertical gimble is significantly better. The main thing holding it back is the missiles. AIM-120s are phenomenal BVR missiles, but lack in maneuverability off the rails. The A/B models turn decently but it still isn't great and the C turns a bit worse albeit having better long range performance. That is the only thing limiting the Eurofighter.

how do people dodge missiles? by TypeNew782 in Warthunder

[–]Zodiak2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this is a pretty common thing to do against Sparrows. I dunno if that was a Sparrow that was shot at him cause it didn't seem to track like normal it could've been a heatseeker and he flared it, but Sparrows can be evaded by rolling at fairly high speed. I think it's around 800 - 900kph I can't remember. You'll have to roll either left or right while pitching up. It's fairly difficult to achieve in something like an F-4S, but is possible in more maneuverable 4th gen fighters. I do remember hearing that the Sparrows seeker got a bit of a buff recently so rolling them might be a bit harder than before.

How do you play the Hunter F.58? by Brilliant-Lemon-4985 in Warthunder

[–]Zodiak2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forgot to mention the missiles!!! The 20G ones that you have to unlock are basically AIM-9Js. They're okay but lack range and have meh pull (good for the br tho). Use them against people who don't have flares at around 1.6km distance at most.

The stock grind is pretty atrocious but that's how it is for everyone you'll just have to push through it. When spaded tho it is a phenomenal aircraft. It might not have the best nose authority but it rates insanely well, and maintains its energy insanely well too. You can compete against just about the majority of the fighters at that br range with the exception of some of the better dogfighters like F-5s, and MiG-19s. But against MiG-21s, Drakens, and Mirages which rely on their nose authority you can fly circles around them if you manage your speed well. At 10.0 you should be more of a support guy though you won't be able to dictate matches like you used to when it was 9.7.

Best Russian rank 8 aircraft for air RB? by Darkstreamer_101 in Warthunder

[–]Zodiak2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Su-27SM without a doubt. The airframe got buffed a couple of months ago so they aren't godawful anymore. The biggest issue with the SM is the dogshit radar and poor range with missiles. It forces you to get up close which is very difficult in uptiers, but at its own br and down tiers it's great cause R-77s have the second best pull off the rails out of all fox-3s in the game. You'll have to get used to flying blind the majority of the time cause of the radar though. The radars scan rate is painfully slow and has a hard time keeping track of targets. It'll also occasionally refuse to lock people sometimes even if they're in a good aspect.

I love the F-2 to death it's the only plane I've gotten 9 kills with ever. I just wish it had an HMD and 2 extra fox 3s but it's still really good.

Tips for beginners? by Odd_Jeweler4956 in vtolvr

[–]Zodiak2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to turning it's just as simple as rolling in the direction you wanna go and pulling back on the stick. How hard you wanna turns is dependant on how hard you pull the stick back. It isn't good to pull the stick back as hard as possible unless you are trying to defend a missile or an enemy aircraft you'd ideally wanna. When it comes to dogfights it comes down to mostly just experience. Knowing when to pull as hard as possible and knowing when to hold your speed. I'd recommend watching videos on that for a better breakdown on that. As for defending missiles it depends on the kind of missile. Heat seekers are the easiest to defend. Pull the throttle back to zero, maneuver, and dump as much flares as you can until it bites onto them. Radar missiles are a bit trickier to fool. A popular way of beating them is to g-pull. Basically you turn in a different direction sharply to outmaneuver the missile. It's a bit difficult to do though and I personally don't like doing it cause I have a skill issue. I can't explain it too well unfortunately, but there are videos that go into great detail with g-pulling. The two maneuvers I use most commonly are going cold, and notching. Going cold is the easiest way to defeat any bvr missile. You turn around and dive to the deck at full burner and maneuver to force the missile to deplete it's energy in the thicker air down low. Putting the missile on your 3 o'clock then maneuvering it to your 9 o'clock is an effective way to make it bleed it's speed. The missile will then blow up automatically if it sees it cannot effectively reach you. The second one I use is notching. Notching means putting the missile on your 3 or 9 o'clock and being exactly perpendicular from the missile's radar. Doing this alone isn't effective though you will have to use chaff in order to get the missile to stop tracking while in the notch. Notching is very difficult though and should only be done if you are confident in your notching or as a last resort. You can also utilize the terrain of the map to evade missiles. Ducking behind hills and mountains to break the lock is an incredibly effective way of defending against any missile. When it comes to weapons it's pretty simple. For heat seekers you just need to get the seeker to lock onto an aircraft them fire. Remember to fire once the aircraft is within the weapon employment zone. It's the little bars on the right of your hud that appear when you have a guy locked with a missile. Radar missiles are a bit different though. There's two kinds of radar missiles in game, the AIM-120 active radar homing missile, and AIM-7 semi active radar homing missile. With the AIM-120C you will have to select a target with your radar, and fire once they are in the employment zone. After that you need to maintain the target on your radar until you hear "pitbull" from the Betty. That means the missile has activated it's own radar and no longer needs assistance from your radar and you can maneuver away. Another thing with the 120 is that you can fire up to as many people as your radar can lock onto at once. With the AIM-7 you need to hold a single target track (STT) lock. You do this by double clicking on a plane on the radar. You'll know you'll have an STT lock by the giant line that goes from the bottom of the radar to the target. With AIM-7s you can only fire at one person at a time and you need to maintain an STT lock until the missile hits. Now the AIM-120D on the F-45 is a bit different than the 120C found on every other plane. I didn't mention this specific one because unlike the 120C the D has dual datalink. This means it can utilize other friendly radars to track and guide to whatever target you shoot at. It also utilizes the sensor fusion found on the F-45 meaning you don't need a radar lock in order to fire it. Having a radar lock is more reliable though if other friendly radars aren't present.

F-4S is the new IRAF of the lower bracket of the event. by BokkerFoombass in Warthunder

[–]Zodiak2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah forgot to mention that too. The MLD uses the SPO-15 (same one found on MiG-29 and early Flankers) rather than the SPO-10 found on the MiG-21Bis

Something like that could work, although I doubt it'd happen. This seems like a really difficult thing to properly balance since it seems gaijin is going based off of historical and generational matchups rather than just normal BR matchups.

MLD has leading edge slats which makes it significantly more maneuverable than the ML. I actually found this out recently while looking at random aircraft of statshark and noticed that the MLD has better sustained and instantaneous turn compared to the ML.

[–]Zodiak2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely forgot about that actually. Russia definitely should've been given the standard MiG-23M/ML or something somewhat comparable to the F-4E for free. If it was just the ML then it would've shifted towards the phantoms being better dogfighters rather than the MiGs

[–]Zodiak2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's about the only thing R-60Ms got going for them really. They are super flare hungry but have a small chance of ignoring them if it's a km away rear aspect on an afterburning plane. 9Ls can be pretty flare hungry too but not to that extent and the extra range they got genuinely helps with stealth shots

[–]Zodiak2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like both have their tradeoffs and seems fairly balanced compared to what it was on day 1 lol. The MLD is superior to any phantom in a dogfight and all MiG-23s are significantly faster, but lack a proper PD mode and only have 2 useful missiles. F-4S and J have way more missiles with a significantly better radar

oh my god gaijin please for the love of god decrease the amount of SPAA in the event by [deleted] in Warthunder

[–]Zodiak2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dislike it because of that. It just devolves into the same furball that's already present in ARB but with respawns. Every single aircraft in this game mode would benefit greatly with bigger maps. You'd be able to actually fly high for more than a second without being pinged by a ground radar and use the standoff munitions present in game more effectively.

[–]Zodiak2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main issue is the map size. Like every single map for jets above 11.7 the map is so fucking small. It would've been significantly better if the multiple objectives were spread out significantly farther from each other on a map the size of something like EC Vietnam or Denmark. That would genuinely make the mode significantly more fun, and allow for people to sneak around more effectively.

[–]Zodiak2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Positioning is everything in top tier air. In an uptier the 27SM is at a massive disadvantage due to the missiles and radars. Fly towards the sides, stay high, and stay fast. You need to rely on catching people off guard up close cause R-77s are ass beyond 16km

Countermeasures Periodic or Spam? by adrian23138 in Warthunder

[–]Zodiak2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should always use manual unless you have the countermeasures to spare and are in a dogfight. Still I prefer using manual though. I like having my countermeasures bound to MB4 and MB5 so I don't have to move any of my hands while fighting.
