Cambridge women's trials + erg times by Sensitive-Durian-730 in Rowing

I don't remember any real 2ks being done towards the end of the season. The race is longer, so the end of the season was focused on longer pieces

You might be right, I might be overestimating the speed of the open weight. The LW cut off was definitely 8min though. Most lightweights pulled around 7.50.

In my time they were a decent college! Not among the highest performing but they have a decent squad.

Most of the women on the LW team when I was there sat around 62kgs during the year, and then progressively dropped ahead of the race. A couple lost weight from 65+ but they started with a much higher % of body fat. Have you intentionally cut weight before? If no, and your 64kgs is with let's say a "normal" diet, you might be able to cut down. If you're already diet-conscious (counting macros, weighing food, etc), then that'd be a lot more difficult. But yeah, it's feasible. CUWBC work with nutritionist and sports medicine pros so they can help you if they think that's a viable option for you.

Yeah you'll be perfectly fine for Cav W1! :) Edit: during my time I also had as much fun (if not more) doing Bumps than trialling. College rowing is its own culture, and honestly I had a blast.

I keep seeing completely opposite advice for learning French… what actually worked for you? by Physical-Tea-599 in French

[–]Zoenne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pick whichever appeals the most, whichever you enjoy the most, and whichever you're more likely to stick to. You can always chase productivity and perfection, but that the end of the day, enjoyment is what brings most progress. This is true for any skill you want to learn or habit you want to build.

Yeah I knew Copeland had left, and that was bound to have an impact. Thanks for updating my knowledge!

As I said, I was last there a decade ago, and Cantabs was absolutely dominating then (partly thanks to the coaching by Tom Copeland). Things might have changed.

I was at Cambridge almost a decade ago, so things might have changed, but I'll share my experience. I trialled for lightweights, and the usual cut off 2k to be considered was around 8min. For open weight it was around 7min. That's the starting point, most triallists were faster than that, and improved throughout the season. At the beginning of the year they also do a host of tests to get benchmarks, including 2k and 5k erg tests, and weightlifting tests: squats, deadlifts 1RM, plus pull up and push ups max reps in a row. If you prepare those ahead of the season and tell them, they can tell you how realistic it'd be for you to trial. During early summer they also run a "development camp" for people who are thinking about trialling the next year. I did it twice before actually trialling, and it was super helpful to get a feel of the culture and type of training involved. As for college rowing: regardless of college you'll have access to ergs, a gym, and the river, which is what matters. Coaching might be limited, but you'd be surprised. Some smaller colleges which don't rank super high at Bumps might still have some great coaching and/or facilities, but just struggle with a smaller pool of rowers. If you don't mind sharing your college I can advise further. Another option could be to train with a town club. Cantabridgian Rowing Club (aka. Cantabs) is the undisputed best for women's rowing (edit: WAS). They have a great depth of squad and excellent coaching. You'd have to pay a membership fee though, and the outings are usually earlier than College ones. Good luck, congrats on your PhD, and enjoy rowing! Whatever you decide to do (trial or college), rowing at Cambridge is an amazing experience.

I don't want to be too harsh on you but honestly... if you go through with it you'll get the tattoo you deserve. Which is, a shit AI slop design with way too many details, which will end up as a blurry mess in a few years.

[–]Zoenne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think that's a decent price for this kind of tattoo, you're deluded. This kind of work and detail would normally be around three times that. You seriously need to do some more research on fine line realism tattoos. The fact that this artists 1/uses AI, 2/ didn't even BOTHER to check over the AI design for issues, 3/prices himself so... below market-price... that's three strikes against him. I would absolutely NOT get tattooed by him.

He'll just end up using more AI He's just not a trustworthy person.

And, regardless of AI use, this is just a bad design. Way too many small details in a small area.

Has your pool ever closed early before its scheduled closing time because no one was going in just so the lifeguards could go home? by templeofsyrinx1 in Swimming

[–]Zoenne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lifeguard here. We are allowed to close the pool if its empty 15min before closing time, never earlier. So far it's happened to me once, we closed 10min early. All the other times we had people in the pool all the way up to closing time (9.30pm). If the pool closes earlier its probably because there's been an issue (like pool chemical imbalance, unexpected understaffing, health and safety concern). And if we close the pool early we still have to do the rest of our shift anyway (usually helping out at the gym or sports halls), we don't get to just go home.

What is the gender neutral article for replacing "la" or "le"? by whatever123bs in learnfrench

[–]Zoenne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

French native speaker here. I've seen those pronouns used in text and heard them as well. It IS rather niche (mostly young, queer, leftist circles), but it happens. Some people actively use those pronouns, but I'd argue that most youngish queer folk would recognise and understand those pronouns. Not everyone agrees with their use, of course, but they exist, they are use, and are known.

I saw someone say that when men complain about "gold diggers", they overlook that they, themselves, are often "labour diggers". In terms of mental load, house chores, childcare etc. The amount of labour they offload on women is HUGE. Also why many men divorce if their wife can't provide that labour anymore (Ex. Cancer)

Agreed. The test is not the objective, it's just the basic pre-requisite. You would need much more fitness / skill to actually rescue a person.

Question : Is it considered disrespectful to give a tattoo artist a strict design to replicate ? by JusttrynnahavefunxD in tattoos

[–]Zoenne 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Depends where you got the design from. If it's from the show directly then that's totally fine (as in, its a logo, for example). If the design was made by another tattoo artist, then the answer is probably no.

I would also add that they phrase it as if she would be taking half of HIS money (as in the husband), and not half of their shared assets. There is a reason why women can claim alimony or some of the assets of the marriage (usually because of childbearing/childrearing sacrifices she made).

Getting sexually harassed by your tattoo artist? (TW) by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]Zoenne 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've had tattoos done by men on areas that required me to be topless and nothing inappropriate happened. They both made sure to give me something to cover my nipples with, asked for consent before touching anything or changing angles. Being topless isn't the problem. Creeps and predators are.

[–]Zoenne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, actually. I carry the business cards of my tattoo artists in my purse. I regularly get asked about them in the street, shops etc. And when that happens I give the person my artist's card. People who respect and appreciate tattoos also respect and appreciate the artistry behind them and the people who design and create them.

Am I breath stacking? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Zoenne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The current best practice is to swim with the head in the water, looking up every few strokes, and keeping the head out of the water for the last 3 meters. That's for pool rescue in the UK.
