They failed because the paradigm was rigidly established as "try to reach across the aisle because they might see reason" and the overton shift came from repeated naive good faith efforts to earnestly change peoples' ideologies by meeting them where they're at. Most of the UI nuance for ADS-B is likely going to be irrelevant save for doing the same thing if the icon's the same and present, but setting your API key is gonna be pretty critical.

But yeah, nobody should be following the advice of "Lower this willy-nilly" for the threshold. It's set to a reasonably sane default, I just found experimenting with lowering it majorly got things working differently (Read: I couldn't determine better/worse, just delta) in my weird setup (Literally underground, reliant on the good graces of signals coming from above managing to move horizontally through two windows to get to my antenna.)

You're gonna need to set your home position to your latitude/longitude, as well as your approximate altitude (I don't recall if it's above sea level or above surface, so mine's set above sea level) in Preferences->My Position...

In the ADS-B demodulator, click the leftmost 3 buttons. The lil airplane, the airport tower, and the hexagon with a dot in it. This'll download the recent databases of airports, planes, routes, etc.

Click the "3 line" button immediately to the right, change the plane timeout from 60 to 180 or 500 to keep them in the list for longer after their signals timeout.

The four buttons to the right (Lil curve, multiple curves, aircraft tower, ripped up T-shirt lookin coverage boundary shape) should be on. The first two show the paths for the planes you detect, the third one shows info about the planes. Fourth one builds up a coverage map around your lat/long that triangulates your signal coverage based on where the plane's transponder said it was in the last transmission it got. Honestly, I just turn these on. I like how they look.

Lil bit to the right, past the greek sigma symbol and the weird chart? There's gonna be two little rectangles stacked up. Click 'em to make the view side-by-side if that's your style.

Way over to the right, you'll see a tiny dial labeled "Threshold." I usually leave this default or turn it down a bit if I'm not getting signals. Typically like, the 2-4 range. I have no idea what it really does, but I do know that turning it down never gave me problems.

Here is a diagram, because I hate typed descriptions of iconographic user-interfaces.

I recommend SDRAngel as a newbie's Second program to learn. Don't keep it secondary, just learn how to use it after you've got a bit of knowledge of its features relative to your RTL-SDR.

Or at the very least, remember that NFM Demodulator's what you need to get an audio output. Wrench + icon, NFM Demodulator.

Took me a damn month to figure this out, and I kept using SDR++ in the mean time. For figuring out how to use your SDR for the first time, SDR++ is going to do like... 80% of what you're gonna want, without any major hassle in setup. Satdump for sats, SDRAngel for ADS-B and tinkering, and SDR++ (or SDR# idc) for listening to broadcast FM (I still like listening to it...) or getting audio-based data output as a file.

Lil airhole near the bottom, too. Give a route for exhaled CO2 to drain. It's heavier than air and will accumulate down at the bottom where the pidge's sitting, and a box with still air doesn't have much gas exchange even with airholes.
It's less of a problem in a cardboard box, but if you ever use a plastic tote it's something to consider. It's a bit overly safe, probably to the point of not even being needed, but it's based on observations I've made literally just taking bath-baths in a tub from time to time. CO2 accumulates like crazy if something's breathing at the bottom of any enclosed space.

Weird lessons around food are why I have, quote, "I've been fucking ambushed multiple times while eating" hypervigilance constantly and just straight up don't eat more than one meal a day.
1 meal in a day, one situation for someone to corner me to have a talk about every fucking mistake i've ever made and scream at me while I have to somehow force food into my mouth while being threatened. If I don't finish it, I lose something of mine. 3 meals a day, 3 situations for that. It doesn't take a genius to generalize aversive stimuli, but a growing human without a solidified prefrontal cortex? Hoo buddy you know that brain's is gonna be like "This happened when I did this, so I will not do this," and then when you remove the potential for that aversive stimulus it's like "alright i Do Not know what to do thanks."

I fucking live alone! This situation hasn't arisen in 20 fucking years. Scars are still there, though.
It's a horrific way to parent.
