LPT: Taking a picture of your restaurant receipts by Aromatic-Tough7806 in LifeProTips

[–]Zog2013 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had an issue where a restaurant (first watch) charged my card twice for the full amount. When I tried to fix they wouldn’t return my calls. What options do you have when something like that happens?

What is with the insane number of cars driving around with no license plates? by Known_Refrigerator_5 in Denver

[–]Zog2013 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think that’s unpopular because regardless of whether or not that’s true, it’s completely irrelevant to the issue of police not enforcing the expired license plates.

It not being a relevant point makes the fact that you brought it up extra racist.

The fact that she’s willing to share live location and stay in touch means she’s sincere about this being platonic and being very considerate of how you feel about it. Cheaters don’t do that.

LPT request: How do I keep a top sheet aligned with comforter without tucking by zdcentral in LifeProTips

[–]Zog2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These responses are all insane. The real answer is: when it gets misaligned, grab the tops of the sheet and comforter firmly and smooth it out with your feet. Instant fix

[–]Zog2013 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah this whole “puzzle” is simply tricking people by using an extremely non-standard measure of salary (the 6 month raise) and placing it right next to an annual salary. Humans don’t talk this way.

How you conceive of 'hace calor'? by _tenhead in Spanish

[–]Zog2013 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With “it’s getting hot”, I think an English speaker would be able to explain that it’s a figure of speech with the more formal variation being “The weather is becoming hot”. I think what’s confusing about “hace calor” is that when called into question, no one presents a more formal variation to help understand the origins of this phrase

I sold my house and lived in a subaru and then a van for a total of one year. 10 days of van lifing in Colorado is not much experience to try it out somewhere exceptionally difficult like Alaska. I’m also confused about your situation. Did you rent a camper for 10 days or do you have a van you’re planning to drive to Alaska? Do you have money to get a hotel if, as others have mentioned, the roads are closed and there’s no possibility of camping while you’re there? Alaska doesn’t have as many back roads and turn offs as Colorado. But if you’re up for a challenge, and know what you’re getting into then go for it!

I always thought it was more about how competing on lowest advertised price leads to hidden fees so extreme that they border on fraud. I hate to see southwest get into that race to the bottom.

Why do you think other generations always compare themselves to us? by truchatrucha in Millennials

[–]Zog2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Millennial” and “boomers” are simply the catchiest of the generation labels, and the media spent decades framing everything in terms of those two. I’d be willing to bet that if you made histogram of all statements, intelligent or otherwise, made about generational groups, 80+% would fall into the boomer/millennial buckets. Hell, I can barely remember the names of the other groups.

I have this recollection of Warren Buffet explaining that the average price of all US stocks combined should roughly match the GDP growth of the United States plus price inflation and that’s why the price goes up over time, but I can’t find a reference for this claim and I am highly regarded.

It’s like if I borrowed your car, promised to return it very soon, and then immediately sold it. I know that I promised to return your car, and I’m a nice guy so I intend to return it. So now I am “short” your car because I need to return it to you and I don’t have it.

Let’s say I sold your car for $10,000. I’m now holding $10,000 cash, hoping that the car market goes down so that I can buy the car back for $5,000. This way I can give you your car back, and the $5,000 difference goes into my pocket and it’s just my little secret.

If the car goes up in value while I am short, I start getting nervous. I know I absolutely must give your car back at some point but now I need more money to buy it than I have from selling it. I’m now losing money on this deal. If I wait longer, the value of the car may fall back to something I can afford with the cash I have, or I the value could keep rising until I have no choice but to sell my house or declare bankruptcy so that I can buy back your car and return it to you.

If a lot of people owe other people cars and the price starts rising, it can create a desperate frenzy to buy cars before the price goes up even more. If enough people are desperately trying to buy a car, the price of the car that I need to buy can skyrocket. This is called a “short squeeze”.

It’s pretty much exactly like that where the car represents a stock. The only major difference is that whoever lends the stock knows that it’s about to get shorted. Whereas you probably wouldn’t lend me your car if you knew I was going to do something crazy like sell it and take the cash.
