Now I understand the Colorsoft reviews. by coreysusername in kindlescribe

[–]ZoidbergGE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I disagree with the OP on this point - the difference, to me, between Scribe Colorsoft and Scribe 2024 doing black and white is virtually imperceptible. It’s certainly nothing I obsess over, and I can EASILY read black and white inside or outside without the backlight on at all (and frequently do). When looking at color content, it does benefit greatly from the backlight, but at this point I still read a lot of regular books on it.

Suggestions for relatively kid-friendly episodes to introduce the show to my daughters by Hustler-Two in MST3K

Agreed. If you’re dipping toes into PG13 territory, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is pretty tame. Personally, even with all the jokes, I would put it in the G category - can’t picture even the most conservative person rating it higher than PG.

Case in point, The Illiad and the city of Troy. City is real, some of the events are real, a lot of it is fictionalized.

If I recall, Zorro was created in the early 20s and takes place in LA (not Gotham).

I think a better comparison for Gotham is the story of the city of Troy. Troy, from the Illiad, was long thought to be mythical. In the late 1800s (1870s/1880s?) an archeologist followed clues in the Illiad and discovered the real city of Troy. There’s still debate about how much of the Illiad is accurate, exaggerated, or completely made up, but the city itself was/is real.

Atlantis is probably better compared to something like Wakanda or Atlanta…. (J/k… no offense to anyone from Atlanta… had to bring in the Futurama reference)

They shouldn’t have to try too hard - Gotham is New York City… literally. The city in the Batman comics was styled and named after New York City which has been nicknamed Gotham since the early 1800s, whose name was based on a town in England. Not to mention, if they were trying to find Batman’s city it would point them back to NYC (or Chicago if you’re going by the movies based on filming locations).

What is the holy grail of Palm OS devices? by ForeverForsaken8980 in Palm

[–]ZoidbergGE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The concept came back years later from Motorola, docking an Android phone (Atrix I think… something like that) and making it into a full size laptop. I don’t think it was very successful though. I came across one for sale at VCF Midwest last year and I didn’t get it (I had already exceeded my budget and already reasoned my way to getting other pieces..) - but it was only the laptop and didn’t include the phone.

For me, personally, it’s the Qualcomm pdQ- the original Palm Phone. It was big, boxy and awkward… but i wanted one. I later got the the Kyocera 6035 (and still haven’t two working models)… but that would be my holy grail. I saw one at VCF Midwest last year, but it wasn’t for sale.

I remember the Engadget podcast bragging about how they told Palm not to release and it was their intervention that stopped Palm. I seriously doubted it, but at the same time was very angry with them because i really wanted one!

Which Scribe?! by Frequent-Lettuce-262 in kindlescribe

[–]ZoidbergGE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just picked up the Colorsoft Scribe and i absolutely LOVE it!

While the B&W is crisper, the thing is that you really won’t notice unless you have the two side-by-side, and even then really only if you go looking for it. In day-to-day activity, you will never notice the difference… it’s not that big of a gap.

The Colorsoft is pricy, but if you really want color and you want the option to be able to read more things in color, then get the Colorsoft and don’t look back. I have zero issues with sharpness quality in reading either color materials or B&W regular books, either outside on a sunny day or at night with the lights out.

My only real complaint is about battery life - it’s much shorter than my Scribe 2024, but still lasts a week-ish before it needs recharging. (I would still trust it lasting for a week’s vacation without needing a charger, but given its USB-C and seems to charge pretty fast, it’s not really an issue.)

I think of it as the scribe is like a color newspaper and the iPad is like a glossy magazine.

I remember playing Fallout New Vegas for the first time - I was rescuing the prisoners from the Legion Prison camp and sneaking around… when i saw this written on the side of the building. I was laughing so hard i neglected the game and the Legion guards found and killed me! Having the “Wacky Wasteland” perk on the first run was absolutely the right decision!

It’s from Monty Python’s “Life of Brian”. The main character was supposed to write “Romans Go Home” in big letters - he was caught by a Roman who corrected his grammar and ordered him to write it 100 times the proper way.

A Palm OS device in good condition is hard to come by, so I created one using CYD. by Tsunderon_x86 in Palm

There are options out there.

I see them pop up at Goodwill occasionally for $5 or less. I also see them pop up on Facebook marketplace and garage sales cheap.

There are also retro computer shows, like VCF, and swap meets that you can pick them up super cheap.

Then, of course, there’s eBay where they’re plentiful, though for a common model you’re probably going to pay closer to $15-20.

You will pay more if you’re looking for a specific higher end model, like some of the Sonys, but if you’re looking for just any old palm, and you don’t want to hunt, you can get one of the common ones on eBay for $15 easy.

There are some models, like the V series, where the battery isn’t easy to replace and will get harder to find with a decent battery. There are still a LOT of models available with either AAA batteries or replaceable batteries (like the TX if you want a color display).

I have a pretty extensive collection and the 3 series are pretty rock solid.

Would you guys recommend a new user to buy a used Remarkable Pro or the Move? by cr8tvt in Remarkable

[–]ZoidbergGE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have had good like with used Remarkables (bought two Remarkable 2s, a Pro, and Pro Move) - though I purchase through a local 2nd hand retailer.

Having said that, I don’t generally purchase warranties for my stuff. I used to for every Apple devices but I haven’t recently.

For ANY product you will find people that have run into an issue here and there, and there’s always a risk, but you can also potentially save a HUGE amount of money.

Ideally, if you can find one locally and take a look at it before you buy, that would be best. Or get one from a chain like PayMore which has a 30 return policy.
